Here's an old link with some distances and information regarding Chuck Wilson. Chuck held the US championship for several years. Since his undergoing extensive neck surgery his distances have dropped to about 650'. Mark Edwards is the current champion. His best cast that I an aware of is 751'. Don

I believe the bottom line is the usage of the reel seat. One tackle shop reports Fuji reel seats damaged by large fish. The example cited was the rear hood being ripped off the seat. It wasn't mentioned whether the reel seat was up locking or down locking. These are extreme cases and the rod was probably mounted with a Penn 6/0 or Newell 646 (80 - 100# mainline). I have not personnaly witnessed

Hi Chris, Perceptions are very slow to change. An example is the previously mentioned lesser expensive rod. That rod would have been very difficult to sell five years ago since it has a spigot connection. However, as more and more large fish are being landed by these rods, the perception is shifting and they are being accepted as suitable fishing rods. Since their prices are so low they are di

Hi Scott, I have been told that the ring is for re-inforcement. Standard practice for us has been to use the ringed/deluxe reel seats for salt water use. Don

I was responding to the original context of the thread. "What are your thoughts on surf rod ferrules?" So, in regards to the question, I would say that the most common ferrule in inexpensive surf rods is a spigot. This is usually with a female tip. How does a 13' fully built rod with 12" ss butt cap and bell holder for $130 sound? It has a spigot. Another very popular complet

"You usually only see tip into butt ferrules on the cheaper rods," I do not keep track of the lesser expensive surf blanks, however I believe the Zziplex Primo Synchro has a tip in butt connection. It is a highly sought after fishing and tournament rod. The advantage of the tip in butt connection is the smaller diameter of the tip section at the connection. this leads to reduced air

Some senior fishermen and people who use braid are using the Breakaway Cannon as a casting aid. An up locking reel seat would be preferred for use with the Cannon. Don

Hi Marty, "I'm a real neophyte compared to most of the people on this board, so I say this respectfully, but I don't think the wrap is to protect it from the concrete. I suppose it would provide some protection if the rod hit sideways (parallel to the ground), but I would be really careful to avoid that kind of a drop." Not all people are as careful as you. Some are very abusive.

Merrick has them listed on page 84 of their 2006 catalog. "Cushioned graphite Casting Reel Seats" If you do not have a wholesale account with Merrick, you may be able to order through ACK Fishing. Both are board sponsors. Don

Hi Scott, You mention a WRI blank. I was sent an Inferno for testing. The tip is 9' long and the handle is about 4'. The ferrule overlap is significant. I'm not sure about WRI, but some manufactures claim a ferrule overlap is not necessary. You will need to check with WRI regarding this matter. The ferrule wrap I put on the Inferno was 1 1/2" long. It was just a guess. Should WRI tell

I've been using a lot of Alconite rings lately. Merrick lists the BMNAT tip top size 16 ring in the following tube sizes: 7.5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15 Otherwise, build up the tip with thread to the desired thickness, saturate with epoxy and let dry. Now you can use hot melt glue to attach the tip top. Don

Hi Herb, You may want to post a question to floridasurffishing.net regarding the type/length of rod you need. In the past the folks I know in Florida tended toward 12' rods with ABU 6500's and 17# line. There has been a shift in Florida to longer rods in the 12' 6" to 13' range. I would think that a 9' blank would be the shortest length desirable for a spinner. The previous US distance r

It is a difficult question. If you are addressing casting performance: I have been attending casting tournaments in Texas for the past three years. I have not seen a single piece rod at any of these tournaments. A single piece rod does cause a logistics problem. Although I have to fly in, many people drive in from the north east, east, and various parts of Texas. These folks could bring long

Hi Gary, The term surf casting rod has different meanings depending on geographic area. To me, surf rods start at 13', for others it might be 12' and still others consider a 9' rod to be a surf rod. Based on the information given, we can provide only limited help. Since you are using a Penn 525, we can assume you will be using about 20# main line and a sinker in the 5 to 8 ounce range.

Hi Billy, "Finding a resource for these blanks in stock has been tough, " That is changing. The CTS Makoi surf blanks started development and testing in Hawaii with myself and CTS over a year ago. The Series I was introduced at a two day casting workshop a year ago August. Since then the lineup has grown to six models. I have a seventh model that I will be testing this coming

Hi Billy, You may be referring to Purglas. I do not believe they are available in Hawaii. Ken Kimura is the owner of Island Rod Wrap and may still be a manager at McCully Bicycle. Ken is the importer of Outcast blanks that are "probably" made in Korea. Similar to OutCast is BigCast. On a yearly basis, Ken tweaks his blanks to make them a little better. The OutCast blanks are of go

Hi Tom, Thank you for the nice welcome. Now I will have to update my vintage website. It's long overdue. It is a pleasure to help support this messageboard. I have witnessed so many experienced people freely helping others. My skills in rod building are centered around surf rods. Although I wrap all the prototype rods that I test, when I want a really good job done I will take the bl
