St. Croix revealed at ICAST this week new SC-VI blanks for there top of the line series of rods. These use SC-V graphite in the tips and 62,000,000 mod. graphite in the butt area. Maybe we will be able to get some good deals on the SC-V blanks soon. Loomis is expanding their GLX lines, but I do not know if there will be blanks available or not.

Why does the can work for storage? There is still airspace in the top of the can, right? Seems like it would still cure.

What about splitting the pour tube lengthwise and using hose clamps to hold it together, would that make it easier to remove from the tube? Or is the stuff so thin that it would make a huge mess with liquid running though the seam in the tube?

#100 When you put a fly rod with a removable butt in your drying box and it is spinning properly, remember that in a few minutes after you close your box, the butt will be loose and the rod will NOT be spinning properly (or at all). This will only happen when you were in a hurry to leave your house and could not double check the rod either.

Just make sure the lure weight rating is appropriate for what you are casting, musky lures are huge and getting larger. Have you seen St. Croix's 7'9' XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXH blank? There is a Rodmaker article on building musky rods, and except for small muskie, the author did not feel it was up to the task.

I agree with the st. croix lines also, the med action spinning rod is a great all-round rod for freshwater fishing. If the shikari sale has a psb 702, that is also an great rod.

It still is helpful though, since most handle lengths are very close to the same length on casting and spinning rods, factoring in a 10 inch handle makes a much bigger difference than whether the handle is 11 or 9 inches on another rod. The main thing is the it corrects for what they perceived to be an inaccurate angle measurement that seemed to skew the numbers enough that the Loomis graphite c

In MI, most seem to use 8 wts for salmon, the kings rum mostly in the mid-teens (from my limited experience).

Is there anything wrong with running a set of alconite high frame spinning guides as the first 2 or three on a 8 wt fly rod (something like 16, 12, 10 followed by 7's to the tip)? I know most use casting guides on a fly rod, but it looks like the higher frame guides make for a nice angle as you feed line on the cast. I know, test cast to tell, but I am not a good fly caster yet and I figure

If you want to know more about that website, post a question on the Bass Fishing Homepage, rod and reels section. Look for MarkG(ibson) among others to respond. It is similar to CCS, with tip angle and loading the rod to 1/3 deflection. Instead of measuring in # of pennies, the weight is grams. Grams/100 gives a nice number to use as a power rating. The main difference is the length of the r

I think Emory is on the pacific coast, if I recall, so that may affect his blank choice recommendations compared to anglers from the Great Lakes region due to higher flow rates in some of the rivers, etc. Again, I am not an expert at all here, just started fishing in the fall for salmon this year and thinking that this spring or next fall to start on steelhead.

I am trying to remember, but I do not think I had to do any assembly with my CPW (I do not have the drying motor part though). All I had to do was put the rod supports in the track. If you have not ordered it yet and can afford it, get one additional rod support (it comes with three and I wish I had 4 for a little better support). I usually use my hand to tighted the chuck, but it comes with

I just bought an IST 1084 for the same purpose (general purposte Great Lakes Salmon and steelhead). I do not know if this is a better choice than those recommended above, just seems to fit bill.

Bill, non-boater is the guy that rides with the angler who has the boat in bass tournaments. In big tournaments, it may be an amatuer in the back and the pro up front (bass fishing). In smaller regions tournaments it is often set up similarly where you register to either be a boater or nonboater.\ Wow, three simultaneous posts, must be a record.

The cost is due to "A river runs through it." Guys think a good fly reel will make them look like Brad Pitt. Actually I am guessing that it is because there is more machining needed on all metal fly reels. I do not buy the fly reels need more precision or tighter tolerance agruement though because top line baitcaster and spinning reels have tight tolerances also and alot more bearing

I have the 13' rainshadow rx7 float blank on order and am looking into getting into steelhead and float fishing for the first time with it. I am trying to decide if I want to wrap it up as a center pin rod or for a spinning reel. One option I am considering is to do a tennessee style handle with the pac bay rings, so I can use whichever style reel I want in the future. What handle style do you

I would think that a fly reel could be selected that would balance a trout rod without adding extra weight. If absolutely necessary, I would try to epoxy a little lead inside the blank at the butt end of the rod. I know that fuji makes a better looking butt cap for adding weight than the slip on kind, but these are designed for being the butt cap on a regular casting or spinning rod. I am sure

I hope I do a good enough job, I am just a hobby builder with 5 rods built, 3 in progress and a fly rod waiting to be started (all for me thus far except and ultralight for my father). I think I will hold off on finishing the in progress ones so that I can have them at various stages of completion. One ready to have the epoxy finished, cork handle and reel seat installation and spine orientatio

My church has started an outdoors group and I am looking at doing a rod building demonstration sometime this winter for them. Any advice on how to do a good demonstration would be appreciated. I am not sure yet if it will be just a demo or if I with try to line up a few kits and make it a hands on deal.

I have a factory lamiglass appalachian 5 wt that I love. I believe it is made with the XMG50 graphite but I do not think they offer that series in a 9' , although for a small stream rod, you might want to consider a shorter rod than a 9' anyway. I am a fly fishing novice, but this rod seems to be about perfect to me.

Actually, just based on the specs, the matrix rods do seem quite heavy with a mag bass 7-0 mf rated for 10-17# line and 1/4-3/4 oz lures weighing in at 2.9 oz compared to 2.6 oz for the st. croix ScII blank.
