I only build pretty heavy saltwater rods and I use underwraps because I am not too concerned with weight.....they are decorative and I like them But ....I also re-built several rods my Dad wrapped in the 70's on Lamiglas blanks

I used one of those on a Black Hole Cape Cod tuna jigging rod I built for a friend. It has performed well as I understand.

I like to run my underwraps apx 1/4 inch past the guide feet. This allows me to leave a little of the underwrap visible as a trim band when I do the overwrap.

My wraps tend to run off a bit due to me being right handed....I tend to push them a bit to the left of center while packing. That is just me though.

I don't do spiral wrapped rods so take this for what it is worth (.02) but it seems to me that a roller top on a spiral wrapped rod would present problems.....especially with braid.

Most pro teams have vinyl "eye black" stickers fans might wear to a game. I have built a few rods using the logos from these stickers under a coat or 2 of CP before applying epoxy. Worked for me.

Like some of the guys have said here....lever drag reels like the one you are looking at are not the best for casting. Best of luck whatever you decide.

As always a ton of knowledge and experience here. Thank you all for sharing it with me and for the compliment Roger. ....coming from you I it means a lot. I am glad to hear that most think it is cosmetic and I am sure you guys are right about the rod being overstressed. I have since heard that along with winning some big battles the rod was involved in a losing 3 hr fight with what was believe

I should have been more specific......the guides are ok....the white spiderwebbing looks to be broken fibers from stress. The blank started off as solid black....now the top 3rd is showing that white webbing

This is one of a dozen a stand up rods that I built for a charter boat. Blank is a Seeker S6460XH....it was paired with a Penn International 50VSW loaded with 80lb braid. Rod was built in 2017 and has seen tough duty drifting bait for sharks....sword.....trolling daisy chains and tracker bars for tuna (mostly yellow fin) and fast trolling deep divers for wahoo on occasion. Captain tells me t

Ron Schneider Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Try lightly "scuffing" the blank where the wrap > will be, and increase tension. > The scuffing (roughing up the surface) may help > hold the threads where you want them. Ron....if he has 2" spacing on a .75 blank he has a lot of blank showing at the wrap. Scuffing may be dangerous.

Most guys around Montauk are using Spro Bucktail jigs for fluke.....they range up to 6 oz. Lots of guys will tie rigs with dropper loops with the jig and add on a hook or two with Gulp Grubs or minnows for doormats. If that helps. IMHO anything over 15 lb test is overkill for fluke. Unless it is braid of course. I hope this helps.

I have used the vinyl ones in the past.....easy to apply...one coat of CP to ensure no reaction with epoxy....then epoxy as usual. I have applied them to wraps as well....I just applied them between coats of epoxy.

With the 3 jaw chuck and freestanding dryer motor I found you had to reverse tape the butt of the rod.....then tape it into the chuck.....then tape the dryer motor base down.... then pray.

The simplest way to do it....(not for the pros) would be a multi grit sanding block. Sand the cut end in a circular motion until it is flat then chamfer the edges till you get it where you want it. Should be good for your purposes.

I will have to check that out. I have built many gaffs and always would file some notches into the smooth shank of the hook to give it some teeth before glueing it in.

I use heavy saltwater guides like Robert....I have to grind them. My overwraps are usually black so I just take a black sharpie and color them that way. Saves me heartache later...I have had the silver show through once or twice on a finished rod

Congrats on your new wrapper and I wish you the best of luck with it! You may want to try sticking a few of those rubber feet on the bottom of your foot pedal...that should solve the sliding problem. I am surprised that you had such good luck using the power wrapper up and over guide feet. I have never been able to do it and always hand wrap the guides on. I only use my wrapper motor for un

Hi Jay.....to be clear....I have not used anything on waterslide paper so I can't comment on that. The vinyl decals I have used have all been self-adhesive. I would cut the team logo off the under eye decal and go from there. They were very useful for my purposes but rather small. I would incorporate them into a decorative wrap in team colors.

I have used vinyl nail decals for themed rods in the past.....Batman...Superman...etc. I have also used vinyl eye-black pro sports decals which are a bit larger than the nail decals. Adhered to the rod with some CP and then 2 coats of epoxy on top. I have had no complaints. []

I totally agree with John from Flex Coat.....I build larger salt water rods and struggled for years with the 3 jaw chucks dropping rods while drying. I would reverse tape the rod butt then tape the rod into the chuck.....a real PITA and it would still drop the rod sometimes. I switched to the diaphragm style chuck from flex coat and problem solved.

After I had 2 roller tops come loose during a tuna trip I stopped using hot melt glue and went to 5 min epoxy. I will never go back. I put the rod in the stands, guides down and mix up the epoxy. I like to have a little room between the rod tip and the tube...just a little....apply epoxy to the rod tip and pack the tube.....push the tip on....spin it once....back it off a bit to get all the air

Hi Jeffrey, Maybe you want to post a pic so the guys can see what you are working with? Or better yet...click on MUDHOLE or one of the other sponsors to the left on this page and browse the guides they offer. Mudhole has a pretty extensive line. Best of luck!

I have built several stand up tuna rods on Seeker blanks that have seen double duty as swordfish rods....but as Mark said....too many variables.
