The bottom wrap, how far out past the mark in which I put my guide, should it go? 3inches ? No matter the guide size or sized tothe guide

It only needs to extend a tiny bit beyond the overwrap, and the overwrap shouldn't extend very far beyond the guide foot. Now you can make your wraps as long as you want, but longer wraps require more finish and all that equals more weight. It's entirely up to you but if you're into performance then I'd keep all wraps just beyond the end of the guide feet.

I like to run my underwraps apx 1/4 inch past the guide feet. This allows me to leave a little of the underwrap visible as a trim band when I do the overwrap.

What is the practical advantage of a double-wrap over (or over-under) guides?

Outside of heavy duty stand-up, IGFA trolling, etc., there really isn't any advantage and in some cases there may be disadvantages pertaining to weight and how the rod speed reacts to that weight.

I only build pretty heavy saltwater rods and I use underwraps because I am not too concerned with weight.....they are decorative and I like them But ....I also re-built several rods my Dad wrapped in the 70's on Lamiglas blanks and he did not use underwraps. Maybe he wrapped his guides too tight but I found that many of the guides on his rods had damaged the blanks underneath over the years. We had no failures but there were very distinct depressions left under the guide feet.

I double over wrap on 80-100 class stand up rods for added strength....again....with a rod that big nobody is worrying about the added weight.
