I have built on a few of those blanks.....they want a graphite reel seat because the rod will flex all the way down to the butt. When a manufacturer tells you what to use you should listen.

Bob.......this is an every day occurrence for the last 2+ years. Not sure why you would be surprised. It took me 2 years of calling Ford corporate and acting like a maniac to get parts to fix a dangerous recall issue on my Explorer. Match the Gudebrod color as closely as possible and wrap all 3 rods with the substitute. That is the only way that all 3 will match.

Mike....I have used Permagloss to restore some old Lamiglass blanks and it worked very well. I wet a rag and gave the blank a quick swipe....it worked very well for me in that application, but that stuff is so hot I don't know if I could manage coating my wraps with it. That is a much slower process.....for me anyway.

I have never seen or heard of a guide failing by coming away from the rod. That includes custom rods my dad built in the early 70's....production rods....rods I have built.....rods I and my friends and acquaintances have used. I have been fishing saltwater for 50+ years....That covers a lot of rods. Guides fail by abuse (rings and inserts damaged) and corrosion/water intrusion at the guide feet.

I have a heat gun and use it almost exclusively to soften up EVA grips to fit over some larger blanks that I am building on.

As far as packing goes Steve....I hold the spool in my hand as I think most do. After several passes no more than 6 for me.....I tape off the thread...cut it and pack with both hands free.....then you have to refresh your 2 face masking tape and repeat. Not sure how you are setting up for butt wraps if you can't do this.

Mark....if you do decide to use them just remember that you need to use a graphite reel seat.....something with some give in it...as the blank may flex all the way to the reel seat. Good luck whatever you decide!

My .02.....I have built dozens of 80's and 130's. I triple wrap them all. One underwrap and 2 over....nobody using an 80 or 130 is worried about the weight an underwrap adds and it does afford some protection to the blank. As others have said...no need for anything between the guides. I have seen blank damage caused by the guide foot first hand when I re-built rods my Dad wrapped in the 70's on

I have had success sanding down or cutting off "dried" finish...as long as you don't hit the threads. Then you can add another light coat of finish to clean it up. Just like when you sand down a coat of polyurethane on wood and add another coat. It has worked for me. Others may feel differently. LOL!! Funny. I found a fly in my epoxy one morning only he had landed on the butt wrap and skittered all along the length before he died....making these really cool patterns in the epoxy with his wings.

My .02.....I once e mailed Gudebrod and specifically asked if their metallics were strong enough to use as a guide wrap (rookie question, I know)....their response was to send me a very involved chart showing the tensile strength of all their threads. They left it up to me to decide.

I am confused??? I never pull the starter tag end through the wrap....I always just cut it off and leave the tag end laying against the rod and wrap over it. I start the wrap several turns before the place where I actually want the first thread to be. After 3 or 4 turns I will continue to turn the rod while gently pulling the tag end....this tightens the beginning of the wrap and allows me to
