Ok.. Thats similar to what i do, except i never have that many guides to choose from.. So i make due.. I always match a build to a reel, keeps the balance proper, and assures it responds the same wat every time.. The main question is null and void then.. Thank you for sharing that video.. The concept of having a stripper guide half the size of a reel arbor according to the article i read w

I agree completly phil.. I just read an artice recently, granted it was for spinning rods for surf setups... But i assumed it could apply to freshwater setups as well..

When i do allt of restorations i like to try and stay as era specific as possible... I have used new guides on old rods.. I feel ot takes from the nostalgia of the rod sometimes... Plus newer styles of guides although lighter, dont have that really attractive shapes and frame designs.. Nothing wrong with that, just looses something in the history.. I will email you as soon as i can donald, i a

I should have worded the first post diffrently... after attempting to get 37 jewelers to respond to weather or not they could.... Either get, sell, cast, help, design using quality german silver, or equivelent metal lf weight and strength for casting.. Or possibly help me, and if not, possibly lead me in the correct direction for setting agate stones back into a ring setting as i do not ha

I do alot of restores.. and unfortunately, it isnt easy finding the right guides for the rebuild.. Heck, im still looking for a jeweler thats willing to atleast write an email, or call me back reguarding setting agates into new guide frames.. I acually did a test.. I emailed a jeweler, saying i had a few agate stones i needed put into a ring setting.. Got an email back instantly.. Mentioned fishi

I am under the undestanding that for the most part, on the guide system, your stripper guide should be around half the diameter of the reel spool size correct? This is for spinning rods of coarse.. I know theres alot of other factors to concider as well.. Just want to make sure im correct in this..

Im aware of that... But the ccs system can be used to calculate pretty much everything on a blank... When i first started using the ccs i was under the idea it was for fly rods only.. Mainly by the way its worded... Its not.. For the most part

Ive got a ccs question related to this topic.. I understand how to get the numbers, and underdtand what they mean, but for a spinning rod for example, getting the lure weight based on the lifting power should give you a idea of what line weight to use correct? I understand thats all subjectable.. But there should be a general idea.. Or range base... Like obviously you shoulnt try casting a 4oz we

You could always do silver at the grips, make a fade wrap to black leaving the center with nothing.. Black should blend fairly well to the blank.. Always looks good.. Or try a tiger wrap.. Personlly i think that would be a bit busy with black and silver. But ya never know...

wow... Thats... Awesome... Lol thats awesome info.. If your looking to go a little less hard core.. (Absolutly no offence there, im acually jealous.. I can never find stuff like that) just find a old sewing machine.. Foot petals already wired in, and the mortor is strong enough to turn cork.. Makes for a great power wrapper too..

I have the crb pro power wrapper, its concidered a light duty cork lathe... Although its a bit underpowered in my opinion.. Dont really get why the went with a thermo reostat for the the foot control

I figured it was a variable speed, just thought it necessary to speak my comcern.. Of not for you, another guy starting up that stumbles across this.. Lol I have a power wrapper with a variable speed foot petal along with a wood lathe.. Both have thier purposes, and do thier job verry well

Wow... Slow down there killer lol First, i wouldnt get tour rod blank anywhere near your wood lathe... Think about it for a second... Take a 1/2 inch pine dowel, hold it at the end and shake the @#$%& out of it... Notice how the wood flexs... Now do the same with your blank.. Now with that in mind, think about what can happen at 750 rpm.. Lol before you can reach for the off switch youll have

Oh.. Im famililar with shaprening bits lol im a machinist.. Thats a daily chore... The bit was brand new, so a said before, far from razor sharp lol.. Not a high end bit, far from a lower grade... Thanks for the input.. Im fairly certain the reason was the chipd werent ejecting.. Got all gummed up sort of speak

Wish we could figure out the speed... His lathe was rebuilt... So the step pulleys and motor are not original.. Its a 12" craftsman "De-Lux" model from 1938 or 39 with a 3' bed.. We didnt smome the bit, just had smoke rolling off the wood.. Backed off, saved the tip.. We were only in maybe 4" 3/4 hp, motor pulley set to 2" step, head pulley set to 4" step.. C

For what its worth, ive never used braid either... Lol Your gonna have fun.. Your gonna get frustrated... Be CAREFUL there is absolutly noting that can help with this addiction... ;) Ask many many questions... Fuji guides are the sure shot.. Cant go wrong there as previously stated.. For attaching the guides, may I suggest going with a size D thread... A is thin, D is a bit thicker.. Alot e

The bit is new.. So not razor sharp.. Lol i hate having to hone things before use.. It did drill straight for the little it drilled.. There was a center mark from the tail stock.. How do you suggest making a steady rest? Theres obviously the option to buy one.. But if we could make one, why not? Do you use your steady rest in place of the tail stock for shaping then? Everything ive read sa

I seem to recall metallic thread traps air under epoxy, and the use of color preserver increases the bubbles... I may be thinking about gas off from permagloss and bubble release... In any case... I do not use perserver on metallic threads, 1 coat of epoxy does the trick.. Since the metallic thread is twisted using a metal tinsel, it stays opaque.. I havent had any experiece with the pearl lyn

So my brother and i were screwing around earlier, he has a 4 jaw chuck, a Jacobs super chuck, various live centers and spur centers.. With the 4 jaw on the head stock and a 16" drill bit chucked up in the jacobs at the tail we started drilling.. His lathe has about 3" of travel.. I was nervous starting the lathe back up after moving the tail in..then it smoked a bit lol.. We stopped

Ah.. So scuffing causes them to break down faster.... That makes alot of sence.... Curb your tire enough times and the side wall will blow out before your tread wears... Then again.. Rocks, pricker bushs.. Zippers.... Truck rides from one creek to the next... These all would scuff the grips a decent amout... Still, im going to try them out.. I expected this thread to be waaay more one sided

The plan so far marbling is going to be butt cap for sure.. reel seat, might go with a split reel seat to utalize anodized aluminum windjng checks.. Split grip, probably end up with cork at this point.. Going to tint the blank with an iridescent pigment using permagloss, i have a technique with permagloss that gives a marbling look.. Kind of discovered that by mistake.. The pigment is a kind of p
