I never put any guide 4 inches away from the tip because for # 1 the rods i built don't require it and i have always preferred to keep the first guide at an absolute minimum of 5 inches away and preferably between 8 or 9 inches away from the tip . Imo the rods are much more lively when the first guide is not too close to the tip top but not so far as to effect support if it requires it. The 8

I keep getting a URL blocked malicious link message and i tried a number of different browsers. Never happened before with the Rod Room . CTS rods had a malicious link many months ago but they corrected it , the Heur Trojan was the culprit and that one is a complete nightmare to deal with.

Braid and terminal tackle are the few things that i refuse to skimp and try to save money on , lots of other things sure but not that stuff. Many people think just like Don though and it turns out fine so to each their own.

How many running guides to use on lightweight builds has been debated quite a bit , i'm one of those that believe you should only use enough runners as necessary but others claim if you don't use the amount of runners the KR software recommends than it's not a properly built KR rod. The below post is interesting , i myself think 10 guides on a 7 foot rod is nuts ( Unless it's exceptionally moder

The Avid Inshore series from day 1 have had transparent wraps that do allow you to see the whole guide foot , they redesigned them a few years back and it sounds like they continued doing that . The members above know how to accomplish that if you plan to build your own in the future.

Excellent , let us know how much you like that NFC blank after you fish it for a bit Curtis .

Curtis: " Being a beginner I don't have the skills to create my own system yet. Why do you think the that NFC suggests fewer guides, than Microwave? Will more guides effect the action of the blank"? I don't believe that Curtis , you most certainly can build your own system being a beginner , the Fuji GPS software makes it possible , it not only tells you where the guides should

I believe quite the opposite , i think 9 to 10 guides on a 7 foot rod is excessive especially if the blank isn't extremely moderate . I don't even have have that many guides on my 8 and 9 foot rods that are built with the KR concept , i do have 10 guides on my 12 foot surf rod though, that one is very fast action and a stiff blank . I judge how many guides and what type of guide should be used

I completely forgot about that other GPS page but i know exactly what you're talking about now , yes, that one drove me nuts, i got so disgusted i gave up on that page and completely forgot about it lol . Michael, please report back with what you find works best for you after you're done with the testing, i would love to hear what you think.

Herb, There is no input for rod length in the KLH/Stradic GPS calculation that I could see. The Stradic 3000 gave 21 inches + Mike , the very first question on the KR GPS ask's you what the total rod length in inches is . The KR concept is about rapidly choking the line down as fast as possible so it's important to keep the stripper closer than normal to the reel , the height of

Yeah thats not right at all despite not knowing the rod length . The 20 stripper should be in the 20" range with the second reduction guide in a lot closer to the 20 more like 8 or 9" at least according to both of my KR concept builds. I used the one below as i believe most do .

Rod tubes are what one would slip rod sleeves into since rod sleeves offer no real protection from a crushing force . Rod sleeves are a lightweight protection and as long as there aren't any heavy objects that can fall onto the sleeve they offer good protection .

I have used the non flocked shrink for years on my surf rods , i use cord to do an X pattern on the bare blank and when the cord is tight and stabilized i put shrink over it and that stuff takes a brutal beating with no problems so you should be very pleased. I did recently replace one surf rod grip to try out the Winn overwrap but i haven't had a chance to see how that will hold up yet .

Actually for 6-10 pound mono Fuji GPS still recommends the KL-H 16 as the stripper just like it does with the 10 pound braid . The Fuji GPS software is much more accurate than people give it credit for , i tried the exact recommendations based on reel size , line size and specific measurements and the rod performed outstanding . My tweaking's to see if i could get better performance was a fa

The problem with using such light lines for test casting is that even on poorly set up rods lines that light will still perform admirably , i always test cast with lines heavier than i use for fishing . Twenty pound braid would reveal issues that are easier to detect than 10 pound braid in my experience.

Did you put in the calculations with the Fuji GPS below ? Do the measurements and see how it pans out. The distance of 21 7/8 " sounds accurate as far as the reel spool to the first guide , my two KR inshore rod's are right around the same .

Just thought i would throw a 9 ' 4 weight blank from Rodgeeks into the mix . It's made out of the same material as St. Croixs SC IV material the only difference is the price .

That wouldn't work for me , i would get sick of my bait landing 300 yards away and constantly reeling in 280 yards of line to get it to where i catch 95% of all my fish which is usually no more than 20 yards from shore.

If you're using 20 -40 pound mono i would be shocked if anybody is going to choose a KR setup over other types of layout methods but if thats the case than you would be choosing a far larger diameter stripper so good point there Roger. Gary's reel holds 225 yards of 6 pound mono and 140 yards of 10 pound mono so that won't apply here but whenever somebody chooses to use 20-30 pound mono on a s

Just typed in Gary's rod length in the Fuji GPS with all reel sizes from 1000 size up to 5000 size with all the different braid sizes from 6 to 10 pound up to 20 to 30 pound and in every instance Fuji recommended's either the 20 KL-H to the 16 KL-H as strippers with a three guide reduction train and a total of 4 reduction guides . I really didn't remember what Fuji recommended as the total

I was about to purchase the KL-H guide set at Mudhole but i asked about it on this forum beforehand and realized the kits were not matched correctly . I agree with Norm about using the KRGPS software it's extremely accurate and tells you what size guides and their recommended location. I disagree about using 9 guides on a rod thats just shy of 7 feet however . On my inshore 9 foot rod i h

+ 1 on the " Trouble getting socks to match" comment by Don , i just use one color no trim, no metallic's or anything else , wraps are as short as i can get them while still covering entire foot , very minimal but i only build rod's for myself . I would guess i'm the only one who uses just a single color lol. Excellent info on this thread though and will be referenced in the fut

You could also sand that foam foregrip down like the top all the way around so the front of the grip bevels down to more of a point instead of just having the top beveled . That would let you use a much smaller perfectly round winding check . Dunking the shrink under a cold water faucet or spraying the shrink with a spray bottle of cold water immediately after heating it will instantly harden i
