Shipping times are all over the place , some say they get them really fast while others claim they wait months , if you got a message saying they shipped i would expect them quickly .

Sounds like you haven't even tried the rods you listed and what you're currently building yet with your new topwaters so i would do that first before making any decisions . I much prefer blanks that are listed as medium heavy in power myself but effectively casting 1 oz topwaters could be troublesome as in my experience they can be difficult to load with artificial's that light . I also prefe

My first build went the same way and i was thinking exactly like you and was determined to fix anything that wasn't how i thought it should be which was essentially the entire project . I should of left it alone because my attempts to make it look better made it worse and by the end of the evening i was about to heave everything out the window and take up bowling instead . OK i feel a little

The rule of thumb is to use the absolute smallest guides you can get away with that will still effectively pass the knots & leader sizes you intend to throw . When i started i used size 8 runners and it worked OK but i knew i could increase rod performance by going smaller , went down to size 7 and then size 6 and i have settled on size 5 runners for the two surf rods i'm building now .

I prefer the St. Croix blanks myself but thats just me , their feel and action i prefer over many others including Rainshadow, i had an Immortal but didn't care for it that much.

"Do you think it is necessary to under wrap guides, is it better for the guide to sit on the thread instead of the blank" Absolutely not to both questions. In my opinion underwraps do two things, they add additional weight and they negatively effect sensitivity. Anytime you have something thats relatively soft in between the guide and the blank will effect sensitivity , some t

Don't know anything about "Gel-gloss " so can't say anything about it but even with a Carnuba waxing if it's really wet my surf rods still suffer from the same thing . I freaked the first time i saw it because i thought it was permanent but it's not .

They usually disappear on their own in my experience but not immediately . I know exactly what you're talking about though. Giving the blank a wax with a Carnuba based product will prevent water spotting in the future. I always used to confuse water spots with fish scales in the past , fish scales are easy to pop off the blank though.

No wiggles for me but what an outstanding gift that is , lucky fellow . I am very very pleased with Rod Geeks blanks though , incredibly lightweight and they perform fantastic.

I agree with Tom and others about spine orientation being no big deal , i do wonder why the leading rod building supply companies continue to make it sound critically important though & it's shown as one of the first things you must figure out when they show on how to build a rod .

If the rods rotating stop the rod for about 30 seconds and see if finish gathers and sags at the bottom because thats a dead giveaway you got too much finish on , use a credit card or lightly use a brush and scoop up all that finish that collects at the bottom of the rod due to gravity . Trying to spot that you have too much finish on is difficult with the rod spinning so stop it for 20 or so se

I followed what the below article states and i'm glad i did , using those specific grades from Scotchbrite make it easy to just remove the finish without going too deep and damaging the fibers underneath .

I had to order from overseas because nobody around carries the Fuji (TMNTT-F) or (TMNTT-R) in size 8 with a 6 ring which is whats going on both my surf rods. Most everything in size 8 comes with ring sizes that are much too large for my liking like size 8 or 10 ring sizes.

First some thoughts on the reduction train : I built my last CTS 12 footer with a guide layout similar to yours with a 30,25,20 , 12 and it was OK but not amazing , the reason why it wasn't amazing is because a 30,25,20 as a reduction train really does not cut the line coils down that much before they encounter the 12 size choker . Using a 30 stripper then going with a 20 to a 16 or 12

"This is a bait fishing rod and I use a conventional reel on it" I see ...........well that certainly throws a wrench into everything i said in my previous post , i'm going to have refer your question to someone who has experience with conventional reels as i do not . Apologies

It's all about the line choice Phil , what type of line and what test determines guide and spacing for me and to a lesser extent spool diameter . I noticed a very dramatic improvement in performance by choosing smaller ring sizes at the proper heights and i have fished the surf for over 20 years using 12 pound mono then when braid came out i have always much preferred 14 pound and below . The 1

I built my last 12 foot surf rod using the NGC and it was a solid performer but it was missing that "Cannon blast" type performance i was used to in the past . This new one with the KL-H guides is out of this world amazing with explosive performance .

Just wanted to let people know that high frame KL-H single foot guides are " Off the charts" amazing on surf setups that are more finesse based vs durability based . I have built surf rods with the double foot K's , single foot KL's , double foot LC's and double foot RV's and imo the KL-H single foot's are not only the lightest but best performing guides i have ever used . I'm usi

There's no reason why you can't epoxy the whole rod. St.Croix Flex Coats all their rods from the fore grip to the tip/top and they look beautiful. Dennis i assume you mean they use Flex Coat epoxy glue for the fore grips , reel seat etc... and use Flex Coat high build finish for the guide wraps because i say with 100% certainty that St. Croix DOES NOT use flex coat rod wrapping finish to co

Phil is dead on you definitely do not want to use rod wrapping finish on the whole rod . I tried Permagloss for the first time last year and that stuff is amazing , easy to apply, dries fast and the finish it provides is super light and durable.
