31. Re: Belt Sanders
Proxxon makes a belt sander that is perfect for guide feet. I dont have the model with me right now but I have been using it for about a year and it is awesome. Hand held, 1/2 inch belt (different grits) flat surface and flexible for grinding the bottom and top of guide foot. I'll get the model later but Woodcraft has em. About 140

What kind of rod? Its quite easy for heavy saltwater; Winthrop Tool, I think Aftco, All American Roller, a few other. Blanks are easy and obvious. Lighter rods are harder because Fuji is in my mind the benchmark for friction guides and non alloy reel seats. I also prefer American but you have to admit there are very very nice high quality components made by non U.S. companies....just being ho

Robert, I read some of the description and it sound like the blank is all high modulous graphite, is that true? If so how do you get that much flexibility from Hi Mod or are some of them low mod? I honestly see any other high mod blank in that category snapping like a pencil so that is awesome!! Are they very stiff?

You can also set the spool somewhere below and run the thread through the friction tensioner. It will feed just fine.

38. Re: White thread
Faskolor and other RC car paints are favorable because they are flexible, I will be trying this in the near future and will pass on results. There might be results already.

I have used 25s before and they tend to look a little goofy but thats just me. I would strip with a 20 and move it up a little bit .........but then again your running an HX, the biggest reel I've used is an LX.

I was wondering if the Flex Coat arbors would work here (saltwater applications with ~30lb of drag). I know one issue of RodMaker suggests they are good for practically any application.

Oh absolutely, I'm going to go that route. I might have been a little generous with the brush the first time. I also didnt have any CP in the wraps and relied on the TM for saturating the threads so I think I will go CP and very thin coats of TM and will probably be very pleased.

I think I might have come off the wrong way. I wasnt implying that I was given FC in a TM bottle, or any accusation of the sort. I guess that I had a un-Godly expectation of the TM since it has been talked about and built up so much (no pun intended). I'm happy with it, I just thought the similarities were farther apart.

I've been way off base before, always made it back in time for muster though...........

Tried TM for the first time and I'll be darned if it smells just like FC, also levels and sets like FC. I used dark threads so I cant really comment on the clarity. No bubbles at all though.

Billy, Where in LI? I have family around the City Island/Bronx area.

I usually put the tip on last to let air escape through the hole at the tip of the blank. I've been experimenting with liquid plastic and making the piece that makes up the difference between ferrule and the blank from a clay mold and fastening everything with low viscosity 2-part.

Billy, didnt mean to put eyes on you before the show. Hopefully I can make it this year, if not, off to the lab.

Billy, I saw a EVA block in the picture gallery and you commented that you mixed the color yourself. Do you make your own blocks? Just curious, if you do - do you sell them? The blocks are kind of hard to find, I picked up some from Versitex which I liked alot and I found some Custom Grip II from a guy in PA but the color selection is fixed. Kind of like choosing from rod building thread in

It definitely is, it was on a saltwater rod and weight wasnt much of an issue. I would like to try the foam though.

Can I ask a question? Is the pourable urethane foam stronger than liquid plastic (Smooth Cast) Someone had said before it was too brittle but what do the spec sheet say for compression strength and tensile strength. Also the Flex Coat arbors do become brittle once they are reamed to a certain point they almost break apart in your hand if you go to far, leaving you with little options if the t

51. Re: optics
Ray, thanks for the info, thats what I was thinking too. I was at WalMart the other day picking up different glasses to no avail only to realize that they were just frame models with dummy lenses with no magnification. I was going crazy there for a moment.

52. Re: optics
Ray, when you use the reading glasses with whatever diopter you mentioned, do they allow you to see the thread well enough to count the actual turns you've made without getting 2" from the wrap? For example; can you put the glasses on and wrap as you would normally (12-14" of eye rest or whatever) and still count each thread on a trim band? I'm like you - I think that the flip up viso

Thats a big piece of gear, Its $83 without the stand. Do you need the 40" between centers? I dont know how much the stand is but by the time you pay shipping for the lathe and stand it might turn out to be the same as a little Jet or Rikon - more portable.

I have used the 2" wide fiberglass mesh tape with great results but it is time consuming because it has eventually be sanded down to fit inside of the ferrule. A couple of sawed off rings off the end of the blank also works nice but again time consuming to make it fit "just right" Also if the rod is going to be in a rod holder and under alot of tension (trolling) an aluminum butt

I've left a message and an email. No big deal, Its about an old order before they stopped retailing. I figure they're away for something.

I think the gimbal is universal. Tape a pencil to one of the slots to give you a reference to the guides and line it up while the glue is setting.
