I am plotting how to pour a foam pistol grip. If I take a premade pistol an pur my two part latex mold makeing material around it and let harden. Then cut in half and remove the original. So far so good I have done this many times for ex spouses costume jewelry makeing. Now to pour the foam. I will need a way to let the excess foam escape so leave ample pouring hole in the top and pour away. Sounds easy and seems like you could create any shape with that foam you wanted. Then use the shrink tube over the skin when applying the skin to assure odd angles are covored.and viola' . Anyone have input before i try? Re: urathane foam pistol grip

Should have also mentioned that i will never buy a fc reel seet arbor again as I poured a 3 foot length in some brass tubing I had in the shop with the extra liquid when making the latest grip. After drilling and cutting into managable pieces it looks the same. Sorry flex coat! Always looking to cot cost Re: urathane foam pistol grip

Billy, you could spray an old section of blank with the release agent ,stick it in the brass tube and have the tapered hole also, fit different size blanks. Re: urathane foam pistol grip

I am working on the very same process but from a slightly different angle of approach as far as the pistol grips go. Derek L. McMaster Rohnert Park, CA Born to Fish, FORCED to Work Re: urathane foam pistol grip

For that shape, you'll want to use shrink wrapping, not the tubing.
What you want to do is feasible but only with a semi-captive mold. Leave a large sprue hole open for the excess foam to escape. .................... Re: urathane foam pistol grip

Can I ask a question? Is the pourable urethane foam stronger than liquid plastic (Smooth Cast) Someone had said before it was too brittle but what do the spec sheet say for compression strength and tensile strength. Also the Flex Coat arbors do become brittle once they are reamed to a certain point they almost break apart in your hand if you go to far, leaving you with little options if the tolerance between the blank and the reel seat, ferrule etc is small. Masking tape comes to mind but I'm not a big fan of it. I tried the smooth cast on a rod with tight tolerance between reel seat and blank and so far so good, we'll see. Re: urathane foam pistol grip

Whoever said it was too brittle has obviously not worked with it much. It's not at all brittle. Working any product down to a very thin wall thickness is going to result in reduced durabilty, but once you mount it to the rod that's no longer an issue.
I don't know for sure how much the Smooth Cast weighs but I suspect the urethane foam is going to be much lighter. ....................... Re: urathane foam pistol grip

It definitely is, it was on a saltwater rod and weight wasnt much of an issue. I would like to try the foam though. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
