Was wondering if anyone has tried using casting resins for making arbors like the ones we already use on reel seats and ferrules. The poly ones we use are fine but was looking for something really indestructible for ferrules aluminum butts.

What line? I have a set of Alum.Ox. sitting in front of me that I am going to use for 30lb test in saltwater.

My favorite guide is LRSG for this type rod but I wrap conventional - you mentioned spiral wrapping. I dont think LRSG will work well when used for spiral. I think everyone is using American Roller for this. Might be overkill though.

But is that the case for Madeira? I would think that if you are using Madeira, you have too, not by choice but because of the additives in PN40

I was wondering if cosmetic wedges would work. Their small wedge shape sponges that our wives use to put make-up on. I'm gonna try it.

I agree, passion and even more so - addiction. This craft is much worse than crack. The best rods - I think - are built by the most passionate builders.

I think some people get scared off when they look at the price tag of a "well built" custom rod. They probably think to themselves "do I really need this rod" . They figure that they can go to Sports Authority or Cabelas and get a rod that for all intended purposes catches fish. Its the customer who can appreciate the attention to detail on the custom rod as well as its

Theres alot of good information there, I'm still a little confused about how the gouges weaken the bond. The rivet analogy makes sense for metal to metal but how does it translate over to adhesive, fiberglass, and EVA/Hyp. The adhesive flows and the rivets do not. I wont argue with RQ, his credentials speak for themselves......I'm just scratching my head a little bit.

Phil, did you ream the grip first? It might have been too tight and chased some of the RodBond out. What did you use to prep the surface? I use rough grit sand paper because it makes ridges on the surface that can provide an anchor for the bond. I also use low viscosity adhesive which can seep into those scratches and ridges and provide a stronger bond. Hope this helps Shipmate, watch your p

Was wondering if anyone has ever built on a CTS saltwater blank. I am planning a winter project and was thinking of using one of these blanks (30-80lbs, 6', Mod/Fast) as a platform for an Avet LX 2 speed. Are they pricey?

Shaving cream is supposed to be another one but I never tried. I bet that the soap would work as a lubricant but not as an adhesive.

Grafighter, I just started one (7ft, 20-40lb, 8/64ths, .785) and it is pretty light.

Michael's has a nice selection of re-usable brushes. You can get a pack with assorted sizes to fit whatever job you are doing from hairline to 3/4 inch wide. They clean up well with acetone, just make sure you get the ones for acrylic paint not water base.

Richard, depending on what size Bluefish and Stripers you are trying to catch, you might be talking about two totally different rods. Judging by the reel chosen, your friend is probably going after cocktail or harbor blues (~5lbs) and stripers 18-24 inches. In this case I would probably start with a Calstar Grafighter 765 series, 12-30lb, fast action. Upgrading to the 460 or 4600 LiveLiner wou

Reaming it is probably better. The tighter the grip is on blank the more it will squeeze out whatever product you are using to adhere it, this makes for a weaker bond. What I do is taper ream the grip till it is snug but not loose and you dont have to be He Man to get it in place. You should'nt have to put your rod in the full nelson to get the grip on.

Pete, Whatever fulcrum caused this was probably close to the breakage and made that particular area of the blank a focal point for stress. Imagine holding the rod in both hands and using your knee as the fulcrum then pulling towards you with all your strength, not good. Alot of pressure concentrated instead of distributed throughout. I would not attempt any repair of this blank personally but
