I have not had this milky white problem with Crystal Coat. Bill is correct in saying that it is a moisture problem. Drying should resolve the problem. Norm

I just posted in another thread above concerning two different NFC blanks designated Mag Light as a possible replacement for a G. Loomis rod designed as a Mag Light. One NFC Blank was a 6’ SJ blank that has a publish IP of over 800 gm, the other was a SB blank that had a published IP of less than 250 gm. Go figure! Norm

NFC has a couple of 6’ SJ rod labeled as Mag Light and extra fast, the SJ 607-1 IM and Sj607-1 SM. However, these blanks are quite heavy duty with intrinsic powers of over 800 gm. They also have a 5’10” XF blank SB51001 SM that is term a mag light but has much less power with an IP of about 250 gm. I have no idea concerning the power of your friends 5’10” G. Loomis SJ rod. G. Loomis still sells

Gary, Wow!!! We really do have a difference in perspective, and I think this difference makes our points. For most of the rods I deal with an IP of 345gm would be a light powered rod for example the NFC MB 66i HM has an IP=337 gm and an AA= 68 and is considered an UL F by the manufacturer, the NFC MB662-HM has an IP=386 gm and an AA=72 and is considered L F. The Point Blank PB661LXF has IP=410

I have refurbished a few old post WWII ‘occupied’ Japanese bamboo rods. The bamboo only extends into the wooden dowel a couple of inches so it is easy enough to split it off the blank with a utility knife, just be careful and take your time. You are right they are not worth much and are made from Calcutta cane vs Tonkin cane. Although heavy and sloppy, they are still fun to fish. Norm

Unfortunately, most blank manufacturers don’t describe their blanks based on CSS intrinsic power (IP) or action angle (AA). Therefore, based on our experience, we are forced to try and relate our precise objective CSS numbers to the general subjective descriptions used by various manufacturers concerning power and action. So in my experience, an IP of 345 grams would be in the realm of light to M

Micheal is correct if you want a very light guide train then use the PacBay Minima guides. The entire set of Minima guides will weigh less than most ceramic ringed stripper guides. I use them mostly on ultralight and light powered rods. I use Minima match (M) guides for the reduction train coupled with Minima fly (F) guides for runners. These guides are similar in height to the Fuji KR guides wi

Curious as to what blanks you are using? I agree with Mark as to the guides to use if you are casting jigs or a float and fly (jig) with a spinning reel. If you are not casting but jigging and just using the reel to hold line, the rod can be set up differently with the reel at the very end of the rod to give some balance, similar to a fly rod. Norm

You don’t need to do this off your wrapper or have the the spool attached for this whip finish. Just cut the thread and basically do a Rizzuto finish like used on an FG knot. Does require wrapping back in the opposite direction to get the threads on top of the tag. Looks pretty easy to do, but still not sure if it’s a better option then using a tie off loop. I guess if you get proficient with it

What size reel will you be using? If using a1000 to 3000 size reel with light braid or mono I would use Fuji KR Concept guides they work fantastic. For the Reduction train use KL16H, KL8H, and KL5.5M followed by KB/KT running guides in the size of your choice. I normally use size 4.5 runners, however size 4 or 5 runners will work just fine. After the reduction train I use 2 KB runners followed by

Don’t do it. The cp penetrates the threads and bonds them to the blank. The Cp does not allow the epoxy to penetrate and darken the threads, and thus allows the true thread color to be retained. That’s the reason you use Cp. Norm

I have no idea what the intrinsic power of your Shimano Clarus light powered rod is. However, based on what you said about comparing it to other light powered rods which were unsuitable due to lack of power, I would guess your Clarus has an IP in the 350 to 450 gram range (I.e. the weight required to bend the rod 1/3 of it’s total length). Many light power rods have a lower IP. David made a very

In my experience, most people buying a custom rod rarely, if ever, use it to soak bait waiting for a fish to bite. Some might use them for trolling lures and this usually requires specific types of rods for proper presentation. However, in my area, most use them to actively cast for fish using artificial lures to entice the fish to bite. This takes a fair amount of skill and knowledge to become

It is intentional. All unsanded blanks will have ridges due to wrapping the prepreg carbon fiber on the mandrel with cellophane prior to baking. When the cellophane wrap is removed there are ridges on the surface of the blank composed of epoxy resin that seeped from the prepreg. The blank can be left unsanded with the ridges intact or it can be sanded to remove the epoxy resin on the surface maki

For a KR build use either the RV6 or KW10 as the stripper followed by a KW5.5 (or KB5.5) and then your KB/KT 5 runners. The KW 10 and RV6 are recommended by Fuji because they give you the proper height above the blank for optimum performance. Try it you will like it. For my PB731MXF Rods I place the stripper at 20” from the reel. Norm

The ridges on the unsanded X-ray and Delta blanks are composed of epoxy resin and they wet sand by hand very easily by using wet/dry paper. Can use very fine grits from 800 to 1500 and not worry about getting into the graphite fibers. Norm

The Minima tiptops will eventually groove, as suggested about use a ceramic ring tip top. The other guides hold up very well, it’s only the tip top that grooves. Norm

When I first started building rods, most were two piece. Then things switched to one piece spinning and casting rods. In fact, I recently told a friend I couldn’t give away a two piece rod down here in the South. Well within the past few months I got orders for more two piece rods then I have built in the past ten years, all from different people. I guess things go around. Norm

The reel seat shown uses a skeleton fly rod reel seat, which has been customized. There are a number of skeleton fly rod reel seats available from different manufacturers. The shown reel seat does not use a hidden thread hood, but rather the fixed hood is hidden by inlaying it into the cork grip. You should have no problems finding a suitable reel seat. Just make sure the hoods fit the feet of the

All of the Fuji hidden thread hoods can be bought individually, I.e. KDPS, KSKSS/ASH, TVSK/ASH, and HPS. These hidden thread hoods will fit many appropriately sized threaded barrels of non Fuji reel seats, such as the PacBay Minima reel seats. In addition, the threaded barrels and fixed hoods can be bought separately, allowing you to build your own skeleton reel seat. Not difficult to do. As Lan

Micheal and David, are you guys telling me you never get that annoying loop of braided line that shows up on the reel spool when you crank over your bail? If you don’t notice that loop you wind in your line over it and it can cause a problem on the next cast. I’m not talking about line twisting I’m talking about a loop formation. I can avoid this loop by manually flipping the bail over by hand,

PS - if you have twists in your line, remove the lure and feed the line out of the boat while moving slowly. This will help remove any twists in your line. Just make sure there are no other boats in the area. You can also feed the line out into moving water to remove twists. Norm
