4051. Re: Guide Replacement
I have several old guides that look very similar to the one you show except that they have a white shock ring rather than a red one. I think they are perfection guides but not sure. Took them off of a rod maybe 30-35 years ago. The ring sizes appear to be 20, 16, 10, 8, and 7/6. Have one of each except for the size 8 and have 2 of them. The size 12 I have has a broken frame so is no good. Oth

4053. Re: Broken rod.
I am not talking about replacing the rod for free! People I build rods for know up front that only the blank has a warranty and my labor costs are not included. As I mentioned the manufacturer does a good job identifying what happened and this saves me a lot of heartaches. I do not have to argue with a person over how the rod broke. In 45 years of building rods I have only had one person that w

4054. Re: Broken rod.
I have sent back several broken rod pieces to mhx and I tell mhx what the happened to the rod according to the customer's account. In one instance mhx said that the break was not due to a blank failure. But they replaced it anyway without any further questions! It is hard to call a customer a liar; you have to take them at their word. I think mhx realizes this and wants to keep both your custome

A new blank is much better than nothing! Knowing how the blank broke gives you nothing but a still broken rod. Guides, reel seat, winding checks and sometimes the handle can be salvaged from the broken rod and reused. The customer may be more than willing to pay a reasonable labor charge to replace the rod. Have done this before and happy customers come back again and again. Do not hesitate to us

MHX blanks come with a great lifetime transferable warranty. You have to register the blank's serial number online with MHX for the warranty to go into effect. If registered go the the MHX web site fill out the warranty claim form. Send this plus 4" sections from either side of the break and $15 and they will send you a new blank no questions asked. I have done this a few times and the servi

Sid, guides wrapped with tread are still able to be moved quite easily, and this allows one to position the guides in a straight line with the tip top after wrapping. To prevent the guides from moving when fishing the treads need to be locked in place by binding it to the blank. This can be accomplished by adding finish, such as epoxy. Epoxy will wet and penetrate the tread and and cause the tre

Don, What I said about having to buy the entire microwave set to replace a broken stripper is not totally untrue. I have yet to find a microwave dealer that sells the stripper alone and have not seen any mention in your advertisements that if the stripper breaks it will be replaced by calling you.. Your above mention of this is the first time I have heard of such a replacement option. This option

Another advantage of the kr system over the micro wave system, which I did not mention previously, is that you can use different size running guides to suit your needs (I.e. 6, 5.5, 5, 4.5 & 4). This gives you the ability to make a more
customized rod than do the micro wave or microlite systems which have size 5 and size 3 running guides, respectively.

The 'b' in kb stands for belly and have a wider and longer foot than the kts (the 't' stands for tip). Two - 4 kbs are used after the rv stripper (or double ft kw stripper & kw reduction guide), which places the kbs in the 'belly' of the rod where there is the most bending stress when casting or fighting a fish. The wider longer foot helps to prevent the guide from pulling out from the stres

I have built many casting rods (and spinningrods) using both the microwave and fuji kr systems and they both perform extremely well. Six of one and a half dozen of the other. I personally prefer the kr system. The main reason is that you cannot buy the microwave stripper guide by itself; so if it gets broken or bent you have to buy the entire microwave guide set to replace this single guide. A ve

4062. Re: G-Looms
The G-Loomis Co. (now owned by Shimano) does not sell blanks to custom rod builders any more. However Gary Loomis does have a relatively new company called North Fork Composites that sells blanks to rod builders. These blanks are distributed thru Batson. They are outstanding blanks, and in my opinion are much better than the old G-Loomis blanks. They are expensive but are worth the money.

I have an old Varmac RS 2 chrome plated reel seat. It has an ID of ~20 mm, and comes with a male ferrule having an ID of 19mm. I do not have a handle for it. If you want it you can have it. Send me an email.

I have an effective demonstration for people wanting to know which ceramic material is the best for handling braid. Using salvage guides (size 30-20) made with sic, zirconia, alconite, nanolite, and aluminum oxide, I give the person a hacksaw blade or a triangular file and ask them to try and groove the guides. They can not even scratch any of them no matter how hard they try. I have used the sam
