Longer rods do cast further. Modern high modulus graphite rods also allows for longer casts not only because it is lighter but also because of the way it stores and unloads energy during a cast. It also seems to me that high modulus rods are also able to cast a wider range of weights then listed. Finally, if you want longer casts, no matter the type of rod, use braid. The difference in distance

Please don’t disparage people for not replying. The subject is of little concern to me and perhaps others who don’t build heavy duty off shore rods, Norm

I use a locking wrap on all single foot KR guides. No problem with gaps, they look great. I do a locking wrap because I like them, but probably not necessary. Norm

Here is something I found a while back. Just plug in the length of you rod, number of guides, where you what the first guide and where you want the stripper guide and it calculates the spacing for you. Basically you want to distribute the load evenly along the length of the blank. This app is part of the rod cents site. Norm

The nice thing about fly rods is that they come in multiple sections, which makes them extremely easy to build. You don’t need a lot of space or even a rod wrapper. With the kit everything you need is included, just follow the instructions and take your time, as mentioned previously patience is virtue. The very first thing you should do is to put the pieces together and find the straightest axis

In my opinion, dry wall tape is one of the best ways to securely shim a reel seat or a loose fitting grip, but you have to know how to use it. To prevent the tape from ‘walking’ after applying epoxy, I tack the leading edge to the blank with super glue. Tightly wrap on the drywall tape until you get a tight fit. When you get a good fit unwrap the tape until you see the blank underneath the tape

I have seen pinned ferrules before, but the crimp on the opposite side I have not seen. Can you remove the pin? If so, the ferrule may just pull off and you may be able to glue it back in place if there is not much damage. If there is some damage it will be close to the cut end of the blank and you maybe able to trim the end back to remove the damage and reinstall the ferrule over the trimmed en

What kind of ferrule is it; metal, spigot, or tip over butt? I’m assuming it’s a metal ferrule. If so, heat the female section and remove it. Then glue it back in place on the blank. You can use 5 min epoxy or tip top cement. I prefer the tip top cement, back in the day it was also called ferrule cement. If it’s not a metal ferrule let us know there are other ways to fix loose spigot and tip ove

The cork filler product was RodDancer pit paste, but I can not find where it is sold. Has it been discontinued? I think Mudhole bought RodDancer, but it not on their site or any others. Norm

Tom, I bought a bunch last year at he Expo; it was a great buy. Darrel, I also like the Elmer’s wood filler in golden oak, the pit paste also works quite well. Another option that works well to to make a cork paste by mixing cork dust with Titebond or Elmers exterior grade wood glue, and use it to fill the voids. If you don’t have cork dust make some by sanding down some wine corks. It does ta

I am guessing at the ambient temperature in my shop, but it was probably somewhere between 70 to 85 F. I live in the southern part of the US so temperatures can get pretty high. When the weather gets cooler I use a space heater for my shop which will keep the room into the 70s. Whenever I use CC I turn off the air conditioner or turn on the space heater. Norm

When I mixed by weight (4R:3H) it seemed like I got a much softer finish then when I mixed by volume (3R:2H). These two types of measurement should be equivalent but they are not, based on my weight/volume measurements for both the resin and harder. Either my scale was off or the the weight:weight ratio is off. In my opinion the volume:volume ratio gives much better results. There is no doubt tha

The difference between the Minima 3 and Minima 4 is the way the ring is swagged into the frame. The Minima 4 is double swagged and the Minima 3 is swagged on one side and lightly swagged on the other. For Minima 3 guides, this partial swagging process is done to protect the colors since the chrome or PVD coated ring is added last. The Minima 4 guides are just a single color and the PVD coating if

The Minima4 black titanium Tiblack guide has a titanium frame with a double swagged hard chrome ring with everything being PVD coated with the TiBlack finish. This finish adds additional hardness and corrosion protection. The Minima4 TiBlack and TiBronze guides are a stainless frame with a double swagged hard chrome ring that has been PVD coated with the TiBlack or TiBronze finish. The regular ti

I have never seen brown foam brushes. If you use the black foam brushes with a wood (brown) handle from either Home Depot or Lowe’s or any paint store you will have no problems. Don’t use the ones with a plastic handle the foam on these are not as good and may break down. You should have no problem coating the handles already attached to the blank. One loaded brush should coat several handles wit

Since I do a locking wrap it is hard to get good coverage behind the guide while it is rotating. So after applying finish to the guides while rotating, I stop the rod with the guides facing me. With a dubbing needle or dissecting needle (a needle on a stick) I pick up a small amount of finish from my brush and apply it to the back of the foot. As you will see, the finish will get sucked in and f

The newly released CRB SSR match guides are very similar to the PacBay Minima M guides, and it’s hard to tell them apart, The Minima guides comes in more frame colors. I have used the Minima M and F guides for years on light powered rods and they work great. Recently, I tried the CRB match guides coupled with the matching SSR RXG running guide on a couple of rods and they also work well. The CRB

The Rec Recoil guides are made from a nickel titanium alloy which is also called nitinol. It about half nickel and half titanium. It has shape memory properties and different formulations have different temperature memory properties. It is a not an alloy listed by Kobeico, which all contain very high levels of titanium, and these titanium alloys are a different animal from nitinol. Norm

To each their own. Never really found the need to prep the feet on guides. Prepping removes the protective coat to help prevent corrosion. But that's just my opinion.
