662. Madeira Thread
I was thinking about expanding my thread collection and purchase some spools of Madeira thread. I was looking for both metallic and nylon thread but with the assortment of threads they carry I am not sure which is the best. Also do they make thread in different diameters to match A and D size?

I would think that a butterfly would be easier to catch with an net rather than a rod. Let's leave the butterflies alone and stick to building fishing rods.

Try this link to the St. Croix website and match your blank to a comparable St. Croix. Again this is only a starting point and you will need to do a distribution test.

I bet that the belt would move around, making it harder to use. I bought the following grinder for this purpose about 3 years ago and it has worked great. The dremmel portion broke fairly easily but if I remember correctly I was using it for someting it wasn't intended for.
Also found this one without the dremmel for 10 bucks cheaper

I am looking for plans to build a multi-rod dryer to mount on my wall. Probably 2 or 3 rod capacity, does anyone have what I am looking for???? Thanks in advance.

668. Re: grouper rod
Tom
I just purchased 30 of the Gator Glass T80XH's to build for some commercial grouper guys in the St. Pete area and they love 'em. They run $24.95 (from Mudhole) and really can't be beat. They may not be as sensitive as some of the graphite blanks mentioned above but grouper don't necessarily "nibble" the bait and I think strength should come before sensitivity when it comes to a g

Robert - What is the proper procedure for filling the guie feet tunnel? I stop the rod from turning and push a small amount of epoxy in the groove between the frame of the guide and the blank at the front of the guide, do I need to do more??
Cliff no CP was used and I've tried bending the rod but not along all of the axis points, I'll give it a shot.
Thanks for the info

670. Noisy Rod
I've been building these grouper rods with single foot fuji boat guides. After finishing them when you flex the blank it makes cracking noises. I think it is the epoxy that has accumulated at the front of the guide between the blank and the frame releasing from the blank/guide, however, it seems this should only happen after the initial flex but every time I flex it it pops and cracks like the ro

Tom:
Doesn't the epoxy protect from abrasion resistance, not the thread? If over the years you've worn down the epoxy enough to expose the thread shouldn't you recoat the rod rather than relying on the thread to now protect from the elements (abrasion). I realize that 12 posts may be excessive for such a simple question but I am just making sure I am completely confident in the process.

I think that one wrap is all you need, especially on a conventional setup because the strain is put on the blank, not the thread, which takes me back to my original question concerning underwraps. Usually I will epoxy the underwrap before putting the guide on and that has to protect the blank in some way. As for double wrapping the guide, the only redeeming thing I can see in doing this is

I'm glad Al brought up double wrapping guides because I've always done this also but according to recent posts it seems that this may be a waste of time also. Do you think so??

Thanks for the info on prepping guides, Tom. But how are you not protecting the blank with an underwrap? It makes sense that if there happened to be a burr or sharp edge that the thread would protect the blank, is this not true???

678. Underwrapping Guides
I've been building grouper rods with some Gator Glass Blanks (T80XH). the guides I am using are the Fuji single foot boat guides. I've been putting underwraps under all guides to provide a cushion for the foot of the guide so it does not damage the blank. Is this necessary on such a heavy blank or am I just wasting my time with the underwrap??? Thanks ahead of time.

Yes I do want it to be lighter but is fuji's titanium top shiny like the titan frames?

Sorry for the late reply I am using a size 8 top. these are the titan guides from American Tackle and I assume there is not much of a weight difference between an 8 and 7. As for a difference in casting differerence I'm not sure.

One more question about building fly rods. I have done the guide placement on my 9 weight and one of the guides is falling about one inch up from the ferrule. is this okay or should I move it up on the tip section or down onto the butt section of the rod. Also the guides I am using the American Tackle Titan guides and are a 20 (double-foot), 16 (double foot) 12 (double foot) and the rest are 8's

684. Fly Rod Help
I'm building my first fly rod and have a couple questions. First of all the blank is an American Tackle Matrix Mod-Fast 9 weight which is 9 feet long. I need to know how many guides you recommend using and the distance from the reel seat to the stripper guide. Also if someone has guide spacing for a similar rod that I could as a template. Thanks in advance.

Ricardo,
It's funny that you asked this because I did a search this morning on the same topic. I found this thread to be of help.
I've never used the M-Hole patterns, however, look kind of cheesy IMO based on the pics on the website.

I can't beleive I missed that post as i check this website about everyday. It appears you made a good decision not cutting the blank, based on what people were saying. Thanks for the info.

I'm looking to build a Shakespeare GBU 84-5 for kingfish this fall but can't find anyone that still has shakespeare blanks. Does anyone know where I can get these blanks from? If not any recommendations on a good substiutue. I'm looking for something with a soft tip for livebaiting.

688. Re: Painting Blanks
Thanks for the info.
I would like to try both methods. But have a couple questions.
First, Tom, how many parts paint to permagloss would I use to tint the permagloss? Also what is a wading staff and why are you banging it on rocks?
Second, Pete, The Permagloss does not take up the Duplicolor? Also when you say "Repeat (it took me a while to get this right)" do you mean to sta

689. Painting Blanks
I realize this is a common question on this forum. I've searched the archives and just want to verify what I've found to be correct. After painting the blank with Fusion spray paint (seems to be most popular paint for this application) I just spary with spar urethane (I assume the spray version of this?)? Is this enough protection for the paint, or do I then need to apply permagloss over this coa

I tried to coat a rod with permagloss that I painted and the permagloss took up the paint. I had to rip up the remaining paint and start all over again. I t would have been detrimental had I put the guides on first. You may want to use a test rod before doing this. If anyone has been successful in doing this please let me in on your secret.
