571. Re: Common Courtesy
Mike,
No I don't need to see the replies. I was just suprised that you got that many responses. I think I am in the same boat as Scott Wood about not wanting to clutter someone's inbox and that what comes around goes around. I did not create the tutorial for thanks just trying to give back a little for all the info I've gotten from the folks on this site.

You received 50 reply's on your tutorial? I believe that Cliff Hall is the only one to let me know that he got my tutorial.

Thanks for the comments now if I could only figure out how to work this computer, I could make my own PDF's.

Mike,
I appreciate you converting these to a PDF for me as my computer does not have those capabilities. If anyone would prefer you can e-mail me also to get the PDF's.

I just got a GUSA (Hastings) B78L for the same application. If you want a little longer check out the B83L. I built one of those a while bak and are perfect for reds/snook along the mangroves
I'm not sure where you are on the west coast bu I'm in St. Pete if you wanted to check out the blank.

EVA I.D.'s should match the O.D. of the middle of the blank. You should not shim EVA.

Like I said before I used to double wrap guides because it makes sense that it would add a little more security. But after I began thinking about it, I had never had or heard of anyone having a guide come off from the pressure caused by line pushing against guides. @#$%& if someone stepped on a guide it would be damaged way before the guide wrap broke free. On the type of offshore rods you are us

I was speaking generally, I didn't think we were talking about a specific rod. You're right on that rod an additional layer of thread would be nominal to the weight and performance of the rod. You could notice the difference though on lighter rods. All I was saying is that I think it is unneccessary because there is no chance of a guide popping off a rod because you didn't put enough layers of th

Double and triple wrapping guides adds weight and reduces a rod's performance, Also adding more thread on top of one another is going to give it a more round appearance.

I used to double wrap all my guides also, but it is really not necessary. You are going to have damage to the guide if enough pressure is put on it in order to rip even a single layer of thread coated in epoxy off a rod. Double and triple wrapping add weight and don't do anything to help the performance of the rod. Think about it, have you ever had a guide fall off?? It is overkill that detracts

My definition of a pole is a long stick (usually made of bamboo) with a length of of mono used to catch panfish from the side of the road. Anything custom built would be reffered to as a rod.

First off it is a saltwater ROD not pole.
Second I would stop using double wraps. I have never heard of a guide popping off because not enough thread was used. When doing a tatic test I put guides on with 1/4" masking tape and have never had a guide pop off so I doubt it would happen with an entire wrap covered in epoxy.
I've always used D thread for my overwraps to prevent gaps, how

The number of new rod builders attending the event was unbelievable and proves the potential for growth within the rod building world. I was expecting 5 to 10 people for the basic rod building seminar but the number far exceeded my expectations. I hope I was able to get a lot of these people started and look forward to next year.

I have horrible handwriting also. I have found that women tend to be a little more eloquent when it comes to writing. Usually I hit up my girlfriend or mom or any random woman in the vicinity to wrtite something on a rod.

594. Re: Wrapper advice
IMO you are talking apples & oranges. The Flex Coat wrapper you are refferring to I have not used I did, however, use the 713 before. The chuck is the same on both and consists of basically an intertube with a hole cut in it stretched around a PVC end cap and mounted on a motor. The wood base does not provide enough weight to anchor the machine down like tha aluiminum base of the Renzetti. Th

Raymond,
As far as looks go, I think they are as ugly (if not uglier) as the NFG guides for offshore rods. As far as performance goes I have never used them so I was relying on the rod building gods to tell me. I understand how they increase performence based on their light weight, however, as far as friction it seems that SIC guides would be a lot better choice.

Are Recoils made of titanium? If not, why are they charging almost $20 for a bent up piece of metal.

599. Re: stupid questions
It can be done but with little experience you may be opening a can of worms. You may want to just leave the existing grip on the rod and learn to tie guides on. After you get the hang of that, buy a blank, grips and guides and build something new. Removing reel seats and grips without damaging a blank can be tedious work. I learned to build rods by refurbishing old rods like you are talking about
