Fly Rod question...again

One more question about building fly rods. I have done the guide placement on my 9 weight and one of the guides is falling about one inch up from the ferrule. is this okay or should I move it up on the tip section or down onto the butt section of the rod. Also the guides I am using the American Tackle Titan guides and are a 20 (double-foot), 16 (double foot) 12 (double foot) and the rest are 8's should I taper the guides lower than 8??????

Scott:

If you have done a static distribution test and are satisfied that the stress is even and not localized, then leave the guides in their position. If, however, you have not done a static distribution test, you need to complete it. The static test will tell you if you need to move guides to eliminate stress, and even if you have to add one.

If you find you need to locate a guide on the female ferrule (assuming this is a tip over butt ferrule) don't worry over it. Some builders actually prefer to locate a guide right on the female ferrule as it tends to reduce stress that would otherwise fall across the ferrule.

I'd wonder what tip top guide you're using. If it's a #6 or #7 ring, there is absolutely no reason to use #8 running guides. The tip will be your choke point so might as well save weight on the running guides by dropping them to the corresponding #6 or #7.

Sorry for the late reply I am using a size 8 top. these are the titan guides from American Tackle and I assume there is not much of a weight difference between an 8 and 7.

Use a fuji top with the Titan guides. There's are steel. Check there site. They don't have a titanium top yet.

Yes I do want it to be lighter but is fuji's titanium top shiny like the titan frames?
