Josh, Milton & Steve Thank you for the info. What a concept about just pouring the grip onto the rod! Really would eliminate reaming huh? Thanks for the instructions on how your are doing your grip. Tom might think my question has been answered, so he may not look at this thread again. You might want to post a new thread asking him about pouring onto the blank. That will give a lot of exp

Mr. Kirkman, Thank you for the assistance, Amazing how many people can view a question and then not offer up help. Can always count on you sir. I have placed my orders and looking forward to toying with the methods you have published in your magazine. Outstanding. Class board, class magazine...you must be a very high class person. Only logical. My last mag came with a tear in the white cover. '

Thank you Joshua and Tom I just build for myself...but intend to build several rods. So the advice icw foam pouring is excellent and very much appreciated. I remember having read the article about the heat shrink but was a little skeptical about it. Not that it works or not.....just me understanding and doing it. I will re-read the article and take a crack at it. I saw nothing on the fishsticks

Mr. Turner, Thank you. I didn't know I could buy pre-formed blocks. That will surely shorten the process. I had just read about the in Rodmaker and went to US Composites website. I don't know how to coat it yet. The only reason I didn't want to sleeve it....is because I was going to shape the grip in a triangle....like a screwdriver handle. Seems to fit my hand pretty good. So I was going to t

I would like to try and make a foam fly rod grip. Just a TN handle type with slip rings. Is the 4lb density adequate? The price list I saw was $19.95 for 4lb that would be enough material. The price does not show a 6lb. The 8lb at $19.95 only get's you 1/2 a cubic foot of mat'l. Next jump up is $59.95! So can I make a decent firm enough grip out of the 4lb? Also how do you install slip rings? Me

Apparently this doesn't happen to most folks. When I fish with my older down locking reel seats they tend to come loose. Regardless of the why....ie I fish wrong, hold rod wrong.....bottom line is they tend to loosen while I am fishing. Perhaps newer better quality downlocking reel seats do not do this. I dunno. But, I never have this problem with uplocking. Therefore I use nothing but uplocking

Wow! And for under $15 that is a deal. If it can register the difference between 9 guides and 10 guides....it sounds like then it should weigh ONE guide. So so cool. Thank you Mr. Gamble and that conversion site is terrific. THAT became an immediate bookmark. Thank you again all...and Mr. Gamble for info. Just exackery what I was looking for. Jim

Thanks Loads. I see that is the cheapest one on their site when I ask for Cen Tech Digital Scales. The little black one. Sorry to drag this out. Really appreciate the quick answers. But.....what will they weigh.....guides, fly lines...etc? I know fly lines are measured in grains....like 185 grains. Soooooo....for the dummy here......how many grains is that little scale accurate to? How many grain

I go to Harbor Freight website and search for Cen Tech Digital Scales and get three. Which one are you guys talkng about? None of them say the specs you quote. As far as I can tell none say to .01 grams or 1/2800th of an ounce. Could you please provide more description of the successful scale you have and the model number? I like the words about the $19 one but don't really know which one to buy.

You can buy the 3m self adhesive grit strips that are used to put on steps of various things to keep them from being slippery. Travel trailer steps for example. I don't think the grit comes loose at all. Just cut them in strips a tad bigger than 1/4" and spiral the strips onto old rod pieces you hopefully have laying around. You can make any size you want. They are self sticking so makes one

I cannot imagine anyone with even the slightest interest in how rods are built.....not spending the money to subscribe to RM for one subscription to see if they like it. Such a wonderful, quality magazine. I haven't built my first rod yet, although I have purchased many parts. My life has been hectic for the last few years. Hopefully '08 will settle down...somewhere.... and I can build some with

Thanks, I guess it's a good thing I deleted it then. It was from a William Flemming and the subject was "book". Soooooo, reading this thread and the mention of books.....and I made a post here....I thought it might be you. Thanks for the reply. Jim

Mr. Fleming I received an e-mail from a Flemming....I think it was...with a different first name. I didn't recognize the "from" line so I deleted it. If it was you that sent it to me......I know not what you said. Your e-mail is hidden on here so I cannot send you a private message explaining this. You probably know a lot more about rod building than I. If it was not you......sorry to

Before you actually mount a guide and glue it on your real rod blank...you might try to do a couple on an arrow. They are graphite, shiny, slick, about the size of a rod. Bout $1.65 at Wal Mart. Wal mart also sells tip tops and cheap wire snake guides. So you can purchase some of this stuff and practice on an arrow before you glue your first guide on and it doesen't turn out the way you want it

Batson Enterprises, I could have e-mailed this thought as you so thoughtfully provided all the info on the RX-8 issue thread. But I wanted others to see this thought in case they already know where to get such a rod blank. Since the thread said you "design" blanks I would like to know if you have an extremely long light weight blank for dappling or drift nymph fishing. I am talking

Justin For beginners I would highly suggest practicing thread wrapping and gluing on a graphite arrow from Wal-Mart for $1.65 approx. I would do this before I try to do it first time ever on an expensive rod blank. I have seen a ka-zillion posts requesting help from fuzzies to graying glue. Also before spending bunches of money on a power wrapper I would go cheapo to see if I REALLY enjoy do

Just confirming to you Alan's advice. Yes, believe it, just put fingernail polish over it. We used to do this in telecom work when using a P-Touch labeler to label things. They would curl up and fall off. We just put finger nail polish over them and it hardened clear and no more problem.

Mike, Thanks for trying to help. I have already done what you instructed and that is what is not working. It reverts back to my previous e-mail. I try to edit and it shows my old e-mail.....then my new e-mail....then has an entry blank that says verify by entering the verify code you got. I would have used the word "you received" instead of "you got"......but that is exactly
