I have a couple of rods coming in for repair next week. I don`t know anything about them yet except one is a St Croix used for Muskies. He broke 8`` off of the tip and he did not save the tip. Is it feasible to try to splice another tip on it or should I add another tip top and go from there ? Or would I be better off with removing all guides and re building the whole thing? I know, it has all been covered before. But please bare with me and give me some guide lines on how to charge as I am just now getting into repair work.
Thanks, Bill Ohio Rod Builders Canton, Ohio Re: Rod repair

You can scarf on a new tip, but it takes great care and patience.
If you simply add a tiptop, with 8 inches lost, the rod will be completely different. I'd steer the guy towards building or buying a new rod. You'll have to feel him out and see what he's expecting or requires. ................. Re: Rod repair

Bill,
You can easily match another tip to the rod. Go to a rod store, or check your own stock for the identical blank. Then, go into your blank stock and match the blank, cut it to length and splice it in with an inside and outside joint with an overwrap on the ends of the splice. Roger Re: Rod repair

Bill:
I would contact St. Croix and ask them if they can match the blank, and the cost if it doesn't fall under their warantee. I have delt with St. Croix on a number of broken blanks. They are very helpful with these problems. Mike Bradfrod R.M.B. Fishing Rods Nampa, Idaho Re: Rod repair

I have the same issue. I have a 10' 5wt which is no longer 10' .
Went fishing with a friend. Parked about 300' from waters edge. I keep my rods in cheap plastic gun cases with foam liners. I took my rod out and assembled it and set it aside. The friends wife thought she was doing good......she.... unbeknownst to me took one hand and grabbed up several rods and walked them to the lake with something else in her other hand. I glanced toward the lake and saw her carrying them all in one hand. Just packing gear to the water. She didn't know any better so I never told her or her husband. But when I got to the water with my pontoon...my rod was laying on the ground with the tip in the water in gravel. About 6" missing. I looked all over and could not find that darned tip piece. So I have the same concerns. Fix the rodd, or ask manafacture if I can buy another tip section for my rod. Will probably send it to Roger Wilson for repair. He has done the same fix for me before and totally happy with his work. He does splendid work. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
