Have a customer that wants a handle rebuilt on a CTS blank. Have done many rebuilds with sliding rings, but not many with a fixed reel seat already on the handle. The reel seat is a cheaper fuji graphite seat. What will be the best way to remove this seat without hurting the integrity of the rod?? Slowly heating grip ,turning slitely as heated. Really do not want to dremmel if I do not have to. Th

Hey Gary, If you are talking about wood grip inserts or fore grips, I have been using regular 2 part epoxy . This is the same stuff I use on my guide wraps. I use to use tru oil and perma gloss, but I really like the way the wood comes out with this finish. I use alot of spalted maple and spalted poplar with great results. Good luck

I am working on a rod for a customer. He wanted nothing fancy, just a gunmetal grey thread wrap on his guides. No trim wrap at all on his guides. I did as he wanted, but now he wants me to change the thread wraps to an orange color. I do not want to cut these wraps off, already have three coats of lite build on them.If I wrap over the epoxy with new thread, then epoxy over them, will this add too

Just curious about how other rod builders get a clean edge when using epoxy on guide thread wraps or other types of wraps?? Anyone ever use the blue painters tape wrapped on the rod to try to get that perfect clean edge? very curious, mine are good, but want them to be better. Thanks for the input.

Tom: thanks for your response. I have always used a 20,16,12,10 then 8s for all my builds of float rods. You mean I could run a 20,16 then all 8s with no problem? Thanks ...Jerry

I have a customer that wants Recoil guides, flex lite guides on his float rod. 1) I know they are supposed to be lighter, what are the pros and cons of these guides 2) would you use all recoil guides or would you use regular guides for stripper,20,16,12,10 then for your running guides use 8 recoils? 3)are they fragile, like I hear Looking for input from builders that have used these guides

Does perma gloss need to be rotated like epoxy once applied, or can it be used like a varnish and just be brushed on to let dry?

Just put my first coat of epoxy on my rod. It was in the drying rack tacky, when I accidently bumbed it with my shirt. Of course some fibers from my shirt stuck to the finish, now it looks AWFUL. First time in 15 years building I did something so FOOLISH . Do I wait till it drys completely and lightly sand it??? There is a decale under it ,stupid move on my part.Dont really know how to fix this pr

Chris: I live in Buffalo,N.Y., and have been building rods for over 12 years now.I have never heard of a supply company in this area. I order all my supplies on line from either Merrick, or Mudhole. Both great companies to deal with. If you do find this company, please let me know. Thanks

I have a customer that wants me to convert his cork grip handle with sliding rings to a fixed reel seat handle. What is the best/easiest way to remove the cork on the rod? Should I be careful and use a razor blade and cut it off in sections? Then once cork is off litely sand the blank brfore putting on new cork??
