What is the difference between abalone shell inlays and abalone veneer inlays? Are they applied to the rod differently? Some use a heat gun. Others soak it in hot water, and still others soak it in vinagar.

Kevin Knox at Angler's envy(left) developed the veneer that will soften in water. the stuff he has is very user friendly and does not crack like other kinds. contact him and he can get you any one of i think almost 400 colors

My suggestion is to DEFINITELY buy abalone from Kevin. He has done the research and REALLY knows the product. His stuff is hands down the best in the marketplace ... amazing product. Best of all, you will get expert advice. I don't believe anyone knows more than Kevin about the use of abalone on fishing rods.

Jim, Gerald and John, your checks are int he mail! Thank you!!

Julian,
There is no difference between shell inlays and Abalone veneer inlays. There are different ways for applying the veneer, but with my process, you will never see a heat gun involved. A heat gun does nothing to make the veneer more pliable. It will heat the outside surface, but what needs to be done here is to heat the interior of the laminate to make it more pliable.

Will you by chance be at the expo? I have a booth there and will be doing demonstrations throughout the day as customers want to see it applied. Please stop by and I would be more than happy to walk you through it.

OR, if you are not attending, please contact Rodmaker and buy the issue that has my article on the application process.

Feel free to contact me at kknox@anglersenvy.com should you have any questions.

Julian,
Come by the booth. I will be doing demo's saturday and Sunday. As the crowd permits, I will sit down with you and go through it step by step. Just introduce yourself to me so I can put a name to a face and we will get you all taken care of.

Kevin
