Doing a burl grip and want the color to come through. What to use for a coating/ finish. Cork seal? Tru oil? Teak oil? Other?
Thanks Re: Finish for burl grip

Hi Gary, When I've used Maple Burl for grips and reel seat inserts I've used Tru-Oil or Permagloss. In each case I use three thin coats with sanding between each coat. The Tru-Oil imparts a slight amber color which I like.

Hey Gary, If you are talking about wood grip inserts or fore grips, I have been using regular 2 part epoxy . This is the same stuff I use on my guide wraps. I use to use tru oil and perma gloss, but I really like the way the wood comes out with this finish. I use alot of spalted maple and spalted poplar with great results. Good luck Re: Finish for burl grip

Gary, if you're talking about burl cork Tru Oil is my favorite finish. It darkens the color while bringing out the grain.
You can adjust the tinting the final feel of the grip by the number of coats and sanding in between. I love the look and feel and it provides a lot of protection. Re: Finish for burl grip

I guess I shouldn't type at midnight. I meant to say dyed burl cork. I'm leaning towards tru oil. Unless there are other ideas Re: Finish for burl grip

I would use cork seal unless you want to have it darken more. Re: Finish for burl grip

Tru-Oil will bring out the colors and character of the burl more then Cork Seal. I have used both and much prefer the Tru-Oil! Re: Finish for burl grip

There are various wood colored wax "crayons" sold at the Hardware or Building supply. They're meant for furniture touch-ups and filling nail holes in panneling etc. I rub the cork lightly with a honey colored crayon then buff it with a terry cloth. The wax brings Burl and regular cork to life. Re: Finish for burl grip
