Granted it's on a piece of scrap rod and the edges aren't crisp and clean. It's not sticky! I plan on trying this out further.

How do the rest of you setup a rod in a power wrapper? Currently I use a carpenter's laser level to sight down the side of the blank and adjust each support vertically so I keep the rod as level as possible.
Am I making a big to do out of nothing?

About the symbol its the Custom Rod Builder symbol kind of like the Diver Down Flag. Tom Kirkman designed it.

I think its time that we had another local gathering. The one at JP's was fun and educational.

I watched the Flex Coat "How We Do It" video last night and thought of something. They mentioned how one of the guys there runs it through a hot melt glue gun and to make real thin slivers. Is tip-top adhesive the same thing as hot melt glue or is it actually a different creature all together?

I think so, its the clear casting resin from AC Moores. I 've been talking to some guys from another forum and I may, I hope, have the problem straightened out.

I tried casting a section a section of thread art the other night, to try something new, and it really tanked on me. I was trying to see if I could get the thread art to magnify under the clear casting resin. Similar to what others are doing with pins and such for inlays. Well, it had what looks like bubbles that have been smashed between two pieces of glass. Could this be coming from the casting

Does anyone know if clear casting resin can be used over thread finish? I want to cast a sample of a wrap and turn it on the lathe for a key fob or something.

I just tried (well actually this past Thursday) marbling for the first time and I was goofing off. I used the last bit of FC I had and mixed in some purple in half of it and silver pearl in the other half. Both were Createx acrylic paint some that I use for airbrushing. It worked great! It didn't turn out tacky. I'm going to try and get some pics off my camera...if I can find the cable.

I started cutting slivers of tip-top adhesive and slide one or two into the tip-top and then heat it and slide it on. I think that way I get the tube full of glue.

Well I used Threadmaster for the first time last night. I love it! I really like the way it stayed in place and didn't seem as heavy as Flexcoat. FC (for me at least) seems to be more fluid longer than TM. When using FC I have to check the previous wraps for drips during the application of finish on each consecutive guide. Tm seemed to hold itself in place longer allowing me to work at a much mor

I think that it's just like the Diver Down symbol, you don't have to be a certified diver to display the symbol. Compared to most of the rods on this forum, some I seen up close, mine are JUNK!! I've only built three rods, but to me I'm proud of them and I don't see anything negative about them. For me each one has flaw(s) that taught me another lesson. I'd never try to sale one.
I do display th

Thanks Tom! I think this is a great idea. I'm sure that people whined and moaned about the Diver Down symbol, the Thin Blue Line, etc. when they were first introduced too.

That looks a lot like an old Montague boat rod. The handle looks a little different but the hosel looks like the few that I've seen. Of course I've been known to be wrong before. The fly reel has me scracthing my head though.

I don't want to mix the two in a liquid state. I just want to use Threadmaster over cured Flexcoat. I'm working on a holo wrap and wasn't paying attention to the amount of Flexcoat I had left to do all the layers with. So one layer of FC and the rest of TM is ok. Thanks guys!!

I noticed last night that I won't have enough Flexcoat to finish my current project (a holographic wrap). Will it be okay to use Threadmaster to finish the wrap or do I need to start over and just use Threadmaster?

I checked the rod last night after work and everywhere it was cloudy the finish seems to be seperating from the thread. I must be contamination. I'll be more careful next time. Maybe I'll start on rewrapping it tonight.

Tom - My finish is completely dry and hard. I even tried wiping the wraps and nothing changed. I'll try and get some pics tonight to post maybe that will help.
Russ - My thread sometimes makes noise while I'm wrapping. Pinging and what not. Like its too tight.
DR - I don't mind rewrapping all of them I just want to know what caused it and how to stop it from happening again.

I just finished a light spinning rod (last Wednesday) and fished it Friday and Saturday at the coast. The problem is that I noticed two problems Saturday afternoon. One I have figured out (I think) the other has me puzzled. First a couple of my guides were loose would turn out of alignment with some effort. I think that was because I didn't scuff the blank under them before wrapping and finishing

The article about custom rods really being custom got me thinking. How far does the blank on a spinning or casting rod need to go into the handle? Does it have to reach the butt cap or could it just reach the end of a split grip handle just after the reel seat?
Just thinking out loud.

I think I may have really screwed up this time. I finished a rear holographic wrap on a split grip and I got a bumpy wavy finish. In the process of sanding down the large ugly bumps I managed to just barely get into some thread. What I'm wondering is can I save it? I put two layers of finish between the base layer of thread and the inlay thread. So I'm wondering if should I just cut the inlay thr

Tom - Each guide wrap starts as gold trim for 4 wraps and then picks up the green. The green and gold are wrapped together for several wraps. Then the gold is dropped and finished as just green.
Now I just need to order some "D" thread. Thanks guys!

I'm replacing a couple guides on a Bass Pro Extreme rod. It's has gold and dark green guide wraps. Upon inspection as I cut off the first wrap was that the green looks to be maybe "D" or "E" size thread. My question is what did they use? Should I just use two "A" size threads together?
