I'm addicted to RodMaker magazine, I've already built one rod and have two more in different stages of build. I just completed two test holographic wraps for one of those rods. Now to make matters worse (depending on if you're my wife or not) my dad just bought an old Rockwell lathe. I've been wanting one ever since I read Tom's book on building grips. So being the tinkerer that I am I started pl

Does anyone that attended the NC gathering remember where Doug Cox got the material for the base of his wrapper? I think that it's from a scrap yard, but I'm not sure. I can find it from the supplier but yikes it's expensive.

I had a blast and learned a lot from everyone. Thanks JP for hosting the gathering. Thanks to Bill Stevens and the guys for Swampland for the pizza. Also thanks to Robbie for the thread. I think that that the builder of the power lathe was Doug Cox. I need to make one like that.

I tried used a dryer during the refinishing of my dad's bamboo rod and it turned out ok. I used Tom's method on my first complete biuld and it turned out much better. The dryer I'm making just got reassigned to lures only. Thanks again Tom.

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone that has posted information on here. I just finished my first rod Tuesday night (April 1st). I used knowledge gained from reading Tom’s book and the forum and also talking with a few members. It’s a Batson Fly Rod kit that I got from Fishsticks4U at the show. I wrapped it with Orange FishHawk thread and Metallic Gold Gudebrod thread. It’s not up to th

Would I have major problems if I use size D wrapping thread with size A design threads. I bought Jim's book at the show and I thought he had said during the basic seminar that it could be done. I think.

Scott and Mark - I don't see why you guys couldn't join in on the fun. Robbie - Thanks for the offer. I don't know about anyone else but I'd like to see your operation. I'm keeping track of all that respond to this email so I can email you with updates and what not.

I'd like to get a local club or gathering together for the rod builders in the triad area. If you live near the Winston-Salem, Greensboro, and High Point area speak up. Composite and bamboo builders are both welcome. After a few people speak up we can plan on a time and place. If you know of someone that isn't active on this site, call them and lets get a local club started.

Jim I wanted to say thanks to you. I attended your seminar and really found it interesting. So much so that I bought your book and I'm in the process of reading it. You had my complete attention during the seminar. Wow if I could ever be 1/10 as good as you at weaving I be real happy. Thanks again.

Looking at the seminar schedule and trying to decide which ones to go to. Being a newbie I'm now stuck on two conflicting seminars each day. I'd like to sit in on the "Basic Custom Rod Building" since I am a new builder. My first rod I do want to make a simple spiral wrapped rod. I also LOVE bass fishing. I have read Tom's book twice and read this forum for almost a year. I've also watc

While I was reading Rodmaker last night and my wife noticed the two tickets to the reception and asked if any wives were going? Since this is my first year (of many I hope) of going to the show I couldn't answer that. She'd like to go but didn;t want to be the only woman there. So my questions to you guys are... Who all is bringing there wife or girl friend to the reception? Or is the receptio

I hope that your third comes into this world happy, healthy, and a fisherman (or woman). Just remember that the show will be in February next year (I think) so stay away from your wife the whole month of May. Just kidding! Who knows next year you could say its a birthday present for your upcoming rodbuilder. Happiness and health.

I started out by refinishing an old Montague boat rod for my dad for Christmas. He loved it. I couldn’t find the original style of thread, but it still turned out nice. Man this stuff is fun!!! My dad made a wrapper for me as a Christmas also. Thanks to JP Timberlake for showing me how to wrap guides. Thanks also goes to Larry Tysinger for letting me use his dryer. Also thanks goes to Tom Kirkm

Rena - Exactly what I was talking about. Mike - Wouldn't 10 wraps at the butt still be 10 wraps at the tip? Revolutions are the same although the diameters do change. Or have I not had enough coffee yet?

Check out Grainger, MSC, etc. and look for a resetable counter. I used them in the past for counting lock cycles. You can get them with little rollers and all you'd need to do is add a little bump or arm on your wrapper to trigger the arm of the counter. Ash

Isn't foam that you guys are using in the grips from the latest RMM very similar to the urethane foam used in sign shops? I used to work in a sign shop and we carved urethane foam that came in 4'X8' panels. The stuff is I think 18 lb or 24 lb density. I thought that using something like that might help with pouring problems as there is no mixing. All you'd have to do is rip it on a table saw into

GOSH! Being that I'm a newbie to rod building and this will be my first ICRBE, I'm afraid I won't be able to get any shopping done. I mean with all the seminars and demonstrations and trying not to miss one over another just soaking in the products available will be difficult. Tom - Are you going to post some sort of schedulein advance for the seminars and demos?

I'm having a really hard time finding Size E blue and white thread. Its banded on the spool and I thinkn its called space dyed. Well my problem is I did find some from Rick's Rod in Colorado (I think). The stuff is $15 for a 50 yard spool. Being that I'm just starting out I'd like to replace the thread with as close to what came off it as possible, but $15 for 50 yds. YIKES!!! I have a spool of t

I can't seem to find a thread about the guide/ring sizes compared to line weights. If there is a post just point me in the right direction. All the kits I've seen don't mention what line weight they'll work with. Is there a chart or rule that will help me (a newb) and others choose the best guide for the line weight as well as mono or braid. Example: Why would a size 8 tip top be overkill for
