2. feeling
I enjoy using the CCS, it’s all about numbers, without numbers we have nothing.
All said and done, the bottom line is FEEL? This is what I do, with rod and
line I go out in my yard and do some roll casting, I start with 10 ft, 20 ft, than 30 ft.
If I don’t get that feeling, I change line size and try again. I always put the
guides on the natural curve, this puts the spine on to top for doi

Has anyone ever tested fly rod lines vs guide type?
For example, Cortland vs scientific using ceramic guides.
Does one have an edge on distance?
My gut feeling with all the types of lines, the result would
be very minimal.

David,
Just go to an Ace Hardware store and purchase an " Elastic stop wing nut "
for the thread dia of the threaded rod. This will end all problems.

I wrapped a few fly rods with minima 4’s size 4 and used the standard

9. weaving
I do some thread weaving (script) on my rods from time to time.
I use white thread for the lettering and red for the wrapping.
After the finish is dry there is always a distinct difference where
the white thread was used.
Wondering if there is a better way to do this?

11. guides
A few years ago I built an 8’Austin fly rod 4 wt. (It’s still my favorite rod).
At that time snake guides where in, a few years later I removed the snakes
and put on single foot guides as they where in, a few years later I removed
the single foot guides and put on ceramic guides as they where in, a few years later, this year, I removed the ceramics and put on minima 4 guides.
So, I’m

My daughter gave me a spinning rod that spent some time
in salt water, East Coast. I put on new guides and tip top on and
filled the cork holes All seems to be in good casting form.
I’m concerned about the effect of the salt water on graphite??
Anyone have the same problem?

15. minima guides
Ordered some size 4 minima fly guides, looks like the i.d. is 3mm (.118).
Wondering if there is a correlation of the # and i.d..
I thought a #4 was the same as a #4 SF, wrong??
Any help would be appreciate.

So looking at the folks on the left I found some listed with those

The other day I was looking for a guide in one of my many
boxes and ran across a spool of old multi colored thread ,
an old rod winder both from Herter’s. So just wondering if there
is a rod building museum so one can donate to,
if not maybe TOM should start one???

22. Re: guides
Steve, my words used was not the best. The rod I used had snakes on.
I build rods as a hobby, so I had one with single foot and one with ceramics.
When I got home I did some casting with all three rod with the same line.
For me it was obvious the line was going through the snake guides with ease!!
I'm sure that for different rods, different casting style the results would be different.

23. guides
The other day I went fly fishing with my 8 ft 3 wt. Austin and was over whelmed by
The ease of casting the line. Dismantling the rod I discovered it had snake guides
on not my normal ceramic type. Went home and did some casting with snake,
single foot and ceramic guides with same line. The rod with snakes had me back
in the zone again. I’m probably all wet, wondering if any one has

24. Re: Trim Wraps
I pull the two ends snug “parallel†with the wrap.
Then rotate the ends “perpendicular†90 degrees to the wrap.
Then add color preserve with a tooth pick.
Let dry and trim with cuticle clippers.
Learned the method from this board.

26. alum sleeve
I enjoy building combination rods but in stead of the sliding rings,
I use an alum threaded sleeve real seat from older ice rods.
I think the rods are from the old Herter’s catalog?
I’m tired of stealing from one rod to build another.
I’ve been using this type of real seat for 50 plus years,
Wondering why some company hasn’t reproduced this type of sleeve?

30. armorall
I read that its ok to use armorall on ones fly rod, I have a feeling my fly line is
picking some up from the rod thus breaking down my fly line,
The line is getting heaver, obsorbing water. Yes, I do clean my fly line after every use.
Has anyone, had this happen to them or is this just my imagination?
Thanks, Stan Yerger
