Hi all, I have a CTS Affinity X 9' 7wt 4pc fly blank that I am considering fitting out with a carbon sleeved foam core grip. I have never seen one of these grips in person, but intrigued by the good press the type gets in terms of lightness and sensitivity. I am considering ordering the grip from Mudhole, the CFX 7.5" with cut out. My questions to those who have experience with these

Hi all, I havent seen anything posted recently about the water based product that was talked about earlier. I think it was another product from Ralph O'Quinn? If memory serves correctly, then I recall having read on this forum that is was due for launch this past June. Does anyone have any news on this? I suspect I am starting to develop some symptoms of intolerance to the compounds asso

Thanks Tom. Fact is that the REC product was good enough for me not to take issue with it, just stating that the Bingham product has seemingly less flaws. I suppose that within each category there will be a range, i.e. upper and lower CG1, for instance.

I bought a bag full of CG2 rings from Bingham (link to the left). Haven't turned it yet, but it looks to be a lot better than the CG2 I got from REC a while back. This is also an opportune moment to plug Bingham and thank Karen for her helpfulness and patience.

Dear Mike and Roger, Thanks for your replies. I am familiar with the static guide placement routine. My concern is flexing this blank by the tip guide only, the blank is so stiff I am worried about damaging the MNST tip guide with the amount of force required to bend this bad boy into the middle area. Yes, it is a spinning rod, but I am not sure if the guide concept is relevant here, t

I wonder whether the hammer handle is really relevant for fly rods. In my opinion there is a fundamental difference in that a fly rod is held with either thumb (most cases) or index finger (least cases) axially in line with the grip, whereas a hammer stroke requires all fingers and thumb to be perpendicular to the axis of the handle, wrapped around the grip in other words. This may mean differen

Scott, I scraped the coating off with the edge of an exacto blade that forms where the blade snaps off. The coating came off clean, and I dont think that there was any damage to the blank. There was so much paint and clear coat on the blank that I think the rod might be up a line weight now. Armand

I have stripped the coating off an old fly rod. The original intention was just to rewrap the guides, but due to UV damage the coating had to go. This has lead to some questions. Must the carbon blank be treated with a coating of some kind, or is it acceptable to use in the salt as is? If it must be coated, what products are suitable in addition to PermaGloss? Is ther esomething I can pi

Tom, I come from a part of the world where adverse weather conditions to the extent of inhibiting travel is very rare indeed, so I can only imagine how difficult it must make logistics for this type of venture. That leads me to wonder why the show is not held in summer rather than winter? Maybe because most of those involved in the industry would rather be out fishing than attend an exhibiti

Hi people, Been lurking for a while. I have been following various threads regarding using single foot guides as tip tops with interest. I think that this is a viable alternative to tube tops for fly rods. My problem with this approach is that to me it is not aesthetically very pleasing. One thought I had was to epoxy or PG the foot of the guide into the tip of the blank, and then do

Hi everyone, I want to try my hand at casting some pins into reel seat inserts, and judging by the work shown in the galleries, this is just the place to look for help. Any advice/tips/tutorials would be greatly appreciated. To give you an idea of my level of knowledge, I know that I am looking at metal pins (mostly) suspended in some clear material (polymer?). Thanks people.

I read that Lefty advises a 30deg offset on the first stripper, then recovering 10deg each on the second and third. I was going to build that way, because it makes a lot of sense, and the offset wont matter that much to the fish fighting scenario, if you are using a 25mm stripper. But then I remembered that I was teaching myself to cast with either hand...

Two years back I had a GT pull the tip off my 12wt, miles away from the mothership. Luckily me partner had in his back pack, wait for it, one double foot snake guide. Well, we bent the snake into a single foot with two pairs of pliers, whipped it on with 12lb fluoro, and finished with a coat of UV knot sense. Worked a charm, landed a few more GT's in size XXL that session! BTW the original

Hi everybody, Firstly let me introduce myself. I am Armand Flies, 34yo civil engineer, Dubai UAE, South African expat. I am an avid SW fly fisherman, no flyrod building experience, limited conventional rod building experience. My question relates to reel seats. I am having a #9 rod built for me by a friend, but cannot decide on the seat. I love the seat on my factory TiCrX rods, mainl
