I'm looking for a blank to build a trolling rod for lake erie walleye. What I need is a 7'6" med. power. This blank needs to be fiberglass and very very durable. These guys are very hard on rods

O.K. maybe I'm being anal. I ordered a rod kit from mudhole (this will be my last) and a week later I unbox and want to start building. First thing I notice is the rear grip is missing. So, assuming I misplaced it or threw it away with the packaging matl. I tear the house apart and spend an hour looking for it. Finally, assuming I pitched it by mistake, I call them to order another one. They tel

I have a friend that charters on Lake Erie and they troll using wire line. The problem they have is guides wearing out. Can anyone suggest a guide the will hold up to wire line?

10. Re: NGC
Thanks, I should have ordered 8s per the library info. I want to use 10-12 lb line. According to the article 4s wont be optimal.

11. NGC
I getting ready to start my first spinning rod using the NGC system. I'm going to use #4s as my running guides. Has anyone built a 7' rod using 4s and what is the biggest line I could get away with using?

I failed to say that I built the rod then asked the question. It was kind of a pain in the butt! The thread wants to come off the spool like when you over fill a spinning reel. If you give it any slack, WHAM, backlash! One concern when I applied the finish, it didnt seem to penetrate the thread. Man, I hope it holds up. Its a 7' MH I'll be throwing topwater baits with

Chuck, your comment " so the line is just touching the blank" is what I was looking for. some kind of reference. Thank you I couldnt find that anywhere.

I always assumed the correct place to put them was so the line flowed with the blank. If we are not concerned with that and the line is ok touching the blank then how do I really determine what the correct spacing is? Equally spaced? Im sorry to admit I'm kind of confused. I read one post the guy said he is building 8' rods w/ 9 micros and the line isnt touching. How is that possible. I'm reading

Thanks for the quick replies fellas. Mike I did notice that the guides toward the tip could actually be farther apart than say a third of the way down the blank. I assume this is o.k? I guess I'm to worried about the "look" of the guides and line and just need to look at the function.

I just did a static test on a 7'6" med. casting rod using #3 micros tip to butt. I'm finding to get the line to match blank curve like I like I'm using 17 guides. Does this seem like way too many?

I personally like split grips on my flipping sticks and no, being a bass guy I never use rod holders. My concerns here are durability and the reel popping out on hard hook sets.

Thank you Hal for answering my question. To all others thank you for your opinions on whether you like them or not. I'm going to build a flipping stick with the split reel seat and see if I like it. Never considered the comfort factor. Wish I could hold one before I build it.

24. split reel seats
I was reading the article in the last RM about the RF-Lite reel seat. The author suggest not using split reel seats on flipping sticks. I was wonder if anyone is using them on flipping sticks and what the results have been. It seems to me this would be one of the best applications for them since its a technique that you need the best sensitivity possible. Thank you Scott

Reading the last issue of R.M.. There is an article written about RF-Lite reel seats. The ariticle refers to Vol. 8 Issue 5, which I would like to read. My question is are these past issues available on line or do I have to come up with the magazine itself? Hope this isnt a dumb question. Thank you, Scott

Great job putting it together Bill! I sure was disappointed I had to leave early, sometimes working for yourself gets in the way of the important things! I really wanted to see the static test demo. Maybe next year. Thanks to Bill and all the sponsors, Scott
