Hi All,
I'm thinking of doing a tartan wrap on my next rod. I did some test wraps last night with plain white on a green blank and the white wasn't white enough even with double wraps. So, I need to paint the blank under the tartan wrap with something. My question is what something should I use?
I was playing with some acryllic paint last night. I use it for inscriptions and it works well

I asked flexcoat ..."what would happen to a rod that was completely finished with flexcoat? the answer came back to me......and I quote"Nothing" What do you builders think?
Rob
Does anyone know what builders do to cover the entire blank on 130lb class rods? I like the added protection of the finish.

335. Testors Enamel
I have a question for those who use Testors model enamel for inscriptions. What do you thin it with, if at all, or does it flow well enough without thinning? I am planning on using a nice brown for a honey Lamiglass blank. Also, can you finish over it directly with Flex coat?
Thanks.

I have seen Ken Prestons web site on painting blanks and am ready to give it a try myself. However, I am not sure how you can turn the blank without ruining the finish with the rollers on my Pac Bay wrapper. It is the same wrapper that is shown being used on Kenhs site. Any ideas?

I have a request from co-worker to make a hot pink stand up rod for his sister. I thought maybe I could find some hot pink automotive paint that is used to paint plastic bumpers since it has a flexitive in it. But what would be the best and most durable product to clear coat it with?
Thanks,
Steve

339. request for Mfgs
Hey guys, here lately I've had several conversations with a fellow Rodmaker about how it would be nice to have some white or even black blanks. I know there may be some in surf blanks and trolling blanks but it would be cool to have that choice in light fresh water styles also. Maybe a few more people will add to this post so you can guage the interest.

341. painting blanks
I have been asked to refurbish some older rods. The customer wants the blanks painted. He wants them painted with Imeron paint. He has just finished painting his boat and wants to have the rods the same color as the hull color.
Will epoxy have an adverse reaction with the Imeron?
How long should we allow the Imeron dry before I start the refurbishing?
Thanks for your help.

345. Painting Pointers?
I just received by new "Slate" Loomis blank (the old IMX's replacement) and in my opinion it is a singualarly ugly matte charcoal grey (I liked the old unfinished IMX). I have saved all the threads on painting blanks and it looks like its time to give it a try (first on a cheaper blank, of course). I assume most people coat the whole rod first and then wrap and finish the wraps. Is this

I like to use a buildup (multiple layers to give the bubble a shot at escaping) of epoxy finish (U-40 LS Supreme) as a winding check. LS Supreme is crystal clear, a good thing for wraps, but I would like to add a colour tint (darkish green) to the finish so the join between blank and cork handle is not as apparent. Anyone tried this? Any ideas on what I could use as a dye that wouldn't have a

349. 5-7 pc. Flyrods
These are getting more and more practical (because they fit in most suitcases) and subsequently popular, but I've yet to see most of my favorite blank builders jump on the proverbial bandwagon. Pricey fly rod manufacturers all have them, now what about Rainshadow, Lamiglass, St. Croix, and others? My guess is from a manufacturing standpoint they're a real pain to build--and expensive to boot--but

353. Glossy Silver Rod
Can anyone refer me to a blank that is glossy silver (or as close as possible) in color? I have a request for one, and don't have any plans to go into painting blanks (at this time, anyway). The closest I am aware of is the St.Croix matte "charcoal" or "slate" finish.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I was just curious as to what the insides of a Fishing rod assembly/manufacture look like. Do the people who work there really like their jobs? Are there all kind of hi-tech machines? I am talking like G-Loomis, St.Croix . They all caim handcrafted by craftsmen. Is it true. I think import rods I envision a group of people chained to a work bench working 23 1/2 hours a day!!!!! Just kidding there!

Just a recap on the Jan. 26th rod builder’s day held in Green Bay Wisconsin. We had about 40 rod builders attend throughout the day. There were demonstrations on feather inlays, blank repairs, trim wraps, painting rod blanks, turning cork handles, making decals, wooden and antler inserts, and building rod turning machines. A local builder brought in about a dozen rods to show some examples of d

I have two blanks that I'm going to build as long spinning rods. I'm going to 'split' the butt grip, leaving a portion of the blank exposed. I want to do some decoration work here, as well as just above the foregrip (where traditional 'butt' wraps go?).
I want to change the blank color in these areas. I'm pretty hany with an airbrush, and I have some ideas for something that would look reall

I want to change the color of an old bass rod blank. Can I add a pigment to Perma-Gloss and paint/finish in one step? Also, where would I get the pigment if this can be done? This will be an experiemental rod. Taking a Berkly 7' rod extending it to 8', changing the color and going back with a spiral guide wrap set up. Thanks in advance for any information.
Thanks,
Steve
