I need to get some orange blanks and several different models. I use Rainshadow on 99% of my rods. Is there any companies that offer orange blanks or would I be better off just spray painting them orange with a spray paint clear gloss over top? I have looked through the old painting topics but there doesn't seem to be a definite answer on what sray paint to use. Will I be able to wrap the guides

I don't see a great variety of colors for blanks, so I'm guessing the not "norm" color blanks are painted maybe? If so what are they painted with (please don't say paint). If not painted, suggestions?

I just finished viewing the 'CC variations' post. The comments on the the hand work involved in finishing a blank (triming & sanding) reminded me of a question I have thought about for some time. Can a blank be safely altered by sanding? I have viewed this site for several months have seen warnings about sanding too much in refinishing & possibly weakening the blank by removing the graphit

Two new articles will go up in the Rodbuilding.org library later this week, or perhaps over the weekend. The first deals with painting blanks and the second deals with surface preparation before bonding or painting. These should make excellent additions to the internet's largest online rod building library. And as usual, anyone can access them. There is no charge. I hope they prove helpful t

George, I looked you up in the Directory but you don't list an email address. I remember at the Madison Rod Building show that you said that you wanted the hardware for some reel seats on old rods, but that it wasn't skip screws. I don't remember what you called them. I found a couple of old Shakespere (sp?) "wonder rods" that I think has what you are looking for. Do you want the whol

Guys, from reading the posts it is becoming more & more obvious that the selection of certain supplies you have in US is vastly greater than is available in UK. Not referring to things like blanks, guides etc as I can get them no problem. Finishes ??? I use Flexi-coat plus a UK manufactured finish. Klass coat, what is that used for, threads, whole blank ??? Of course I can ge

Hi all Just thought I would throw this out for you all. Tuesday I saw a Mustang Convertible that was painted in the holographic paint. You know like the guides, It changed colors as you looked at it from different angles. Well I thought COOL, but how cool would it be to be able to paint a blank that way.On my way to work I pass an auto paint supply store, since I needed some 1/4 in masking tape I

Hi folks, I know the Whuppin Sticks retailed by Cabela's are lower end rods with really favorable warrantees as I see it. I have looked around a little and the reviews are definitely favorable as well so they have gained my interests as a possible low end custom type rod I can put out at a more favorable prices then I have been building rods for. I’d be interested to know if any of you may hav

3 New Sponsors have recently joined us here at RodBuilding.org. The first is Rocky Mountain Products, a part of G&L FlyCraft. Their link is not active yet as we are awaiting the completion of their new website. I'll announce when that link goes active. Next up is "Klass-Kote" which is an epoxy paint used in the craft and modeling industry. As it turns out, it's an excellent and

I have been asked from time to time what epoxy or epoxies I use for my feather work and I have always told everyone that I use HobbyPoxy. I had recently discovered that HobbyPoxy now longer exists, except for my stash. I have now experimented and found a substitute and it is even better than HobbyPoxy. I use Klass Kote NOW and it is some really nice stuff. It is gin clear, very thin and VERY

I am presently experimenting with painting rod blanks with Krylon for Plastic and I am interested to see if anyone else has worked with it. I am also trying Appliance Epoxy Spray Paint and Rustoleum as well. I have the stuff laying around the house as I use it to refurb my Penn reels. I am also conducting experiments with Future Acrylic as a color preserver for thread wraps and dilute Elmer's

I recently came across "Fusion" spray paint from Krylon, made for use on plastics and PVC materials. Has anyone had any experience with using it to paint blanks? I've been reading posts and checking the archives about painting blanks for an up coming project, but many seem pretty messy and complex with so-so results for beginners and posts concerning regular spray paints seem to contr

Tom or Anyone Else: I have not painted any blanks to date as a background for a Butt Wrap and am wondering what Brand Name or kind of paint is the best for this application. I needed to correct a misspelling on a customer's rod and painted the area with Flat Black enamel paint used for airplane models. Big mistake. First the application was tough and tedious and the finish dried to a rough tex

Just below in a post regarding blank sanding, a gentlemen indicated that all blanks must be finished to support the graphite fibers. But in another post on 12-28, Tom Kirkman writes this: "Okay, the fact is, you could just rewrap on the naked blank. In fact, you'll find it a bit crisper (more efficient as you have the same stiffness for less weight without the paint/finish). The bare gra

I did a search on this topic, but was unable to find an answer to my question. I have stripped several rods for rebuild, but have been fortunate that the guides were placed in the same or very close to where the old ones were. I am in the process of stripping a rod that is spinning and will convert it to conventional. Does anyone know of a way to strip the remaining epoxy grooves left after the t

I've read some pro's and con's on this site with regards to adding pigments to epoxy finishes and it seems that most of the con's where with regards to weight or how long the finish would last. If weight is not a factor for a particular rod what are the quirks with longevity? What does the factory finish have that we as rod builders could or couldn't do to eleminate this concern?
