301. Need expert opinion
I have a question. I work out of my home and build a quite a few rods for halibut fishing in Alaska. Don't know why this has happened, but that was the way it worked out. Been doing this for 3 years and all of the Charter Captains I build for like my choice of Rainshadow's Forcast Solid Glass Blanks. None have broken in 3 years, which was a common complaint on these boats with other brands of

My winter project: building a spread of king rods.
I want to use a sleeve for the bottom section of the rear grip next to the gimbal where the grip always get torn up going in and out of the rod holders. But they are what they are...black and boring. I was thinking of putting a short sleeve next to the gimbal and then doing the rest of the rear grip in eva with some kind of inlay like a diam

304. Painting a Rod Blank
Seems that a lot of people are refinishing/finishing rod blanks these days.
I talked to a couple and described my blank painting method. SInce neither of them had heard of it, there's probably others that haven't either. This is not original to me, I read it somewhere on the Internet, moons ago, possibly on the wmi board.
The poster described a method they used to paint rod blanks in a factory

My question: does a colored overcoat have the durability to withstand all those flexes, twists and turns to be encountered during useage and quite possibly, abuseage. What about UV? My mind is racing two yea

Got a guy who wants a 2pc 7' 5wt. in blue. I saw where Forecast makes a 7.6' 5wt in blue. What effects would it have on the rod if I were to cut 6" from the butt? Oh! And buy the way, anybody know what kind of action the Forecast F765-2 is?
Thanks,
Steve

309. painting blanks help
I spoke with a good friend over the weekend who is a tremendous artist, and a wiz with an airbrush. We've decided to start painting some blanks, and I need advice on paints and procedures to preserving the artwork once on the blank.
What type of paints are best?
Is the paint durable enough, or does it need a finish coat?
What finishes are preferable for this type of application?
I appreciate

311. Painting Blanks
I am still confused why someone would use a paint pigment in the epoxy. It seems it would be a lot easier to apply the paint first to a rod and then apply epoxy. It would be a better finish, more "Factory Like". The weight difference would be so small and not noticeable. Maybe just me in my old days. After painting blanks for God knows how long I tend to get cranky at these new fangled wa

A friend has asked me to refinish an old Garcia fiberglass fly rod that he has had since he was a kid. It has sentimental value and he would like to continue using it. Replacing the cork, reel seat, and guides will be no problem, however, my question has to do with refinishing the blank itself. It's scarred and marred. My friend would like these blemishes removed as much as possible. I was t

I ordered a Calstar Graphiter GF760H blank for Amberjack fishing and was really suprised by the crook in the first 8 of the blank. I can't do anything about it now because I've already abraided the blank for painting. That's my fault for not checking first. I'm not saying I'll never use Calstar blanks again but I am very disappointed that this blank made it through to a retailer and then sold as

After going through all of the archives, I still have a question about painting a blank. Several people have mentioned using Testor's (model paints) pigments to color epoxey's, permagloss, etc. but I would like to know if anyone has tried using Testor's model spray paints to paint a blank. I know they are good paints, come in a large variety of colors, including metalflakes and small spray can

317. 2 piece to 1 piece
You guys are going to get sick of hearing from me!!
I have some nice 2 piece 5'6" mudhole blanks that I want to experiment with. First, I don't particularly want a 2-pc blank that short and I wonder what the consequences would be if I just used a little Rod Bond to make it a 1 pc (I realize that I would have to wrap the ferrule)
Next, I want to try painting the blank. Won't painting bo

318. Wood for butts
Want to turn a couple of wood butts for a client for 20-30# class rods, using some Padouk. This is a hard wood with a pink/burgandy color. Anyone have experience using such or do I need to still use hickoy and/or ash for a core?
Also, any way to "paint" a glass blank to change the color of the blank before I start wrapping. Never done it before !
Thanks

I painted my first blank the other day. The paint came out fine but when I put the Permagloss on it cracked in places. Not the results I was looking for. The paint was a hobby spray paint from wal-mart. I think it was enamel. Think I may mix some paint together with Classic Coat and see how that turns out.
Thanks,
Steve

320. Two-part rod paints
Gentlemen,
Amidst all reading that I have done in in the previous weeks in terms of building your first rod project do I have a good general idea of what is involved. Getting the right blank, getting the right guides, wrapping them, and applying the right epoxies to their finish, and so forth.
But what about refinishing a blank before you attach anything to it. I just got about 20 rods that

I have been wondering if I would be able to color my coatings transparent colors. Of course I am most likely trying to get myself in trouble by wanting a transparent black.
Has anybody had success with coloring coatings?
Would you have been able to keep a consistent tone through different mixes?
Was the finish cloudy or have wavy patterns (I would like a consistent even coloring)?
If you did have

I'm about to paint a blank hot pink. I tried mixing some paint with Permagloss and it didn't quite come out like I wanted it to. The Permagloss was too thin. Do you think it would be alright to use LS Supreme to paint the blank since it is thicker and then go over that with the Permagloss it to give a tough shell? It seems the Permagloss is a harder and tougher finish. I'll be using the Testors m

Hello everyone,
I've been a lurker here for a little over a year and have picked up some fantastic ideas from all of you. Now I feel it's my turn to re-pay the favor.
I've been searching high and low for "colored reel seat inserts" that would match diffrent colored blanks with little success. The only one(s) even close to what I wanted are the H&H seats (I don't care for them tho

I have seen several posts that use denatured alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, IPA and propanol. I am working with only matte grey blanks, Rainshadow, and use denatured alcohol to wipe down. I have not observed any damage to the finish. Several posts specifically say do not use denatured on matte blanks. If this is a bad practice please let me know. Thanks Gon Fishn

330. colored Permagloss
Hello,
I realize that this is starting to sound like a broken record, but, what exact product can be added to Permagloss to color or tint a rod. There is so much talk about what not to use but nothing specific about what to use exactly(name/brand).I know its easy for me to sit here and come up with suggestions, but maybe U-40 could develop some color additives for Permagloss. It sure seems
