I'm trying to start a group, similar to the NERBS and the other area groups. If I can get enough interest, I'd like do at least a couple get togethers throughout the year, with the first being maybe next spring or summer around KY and Barkley Lakes, maybe try to hit the panfish and bass spawns. If interested in this group, reply to this tread and list your email, so that I can start putting tog

So this is a little off season but kind of nice to think about in the drought and 100 degree weather. I have a request for a lake trout rod for the ice. Mostly jigging in fairly deep lakes in western South Dakota outside of a shack, and mainly standing up to fish. He originaly said he wants 'a pool cue' with a reel on it. I'm guessing I will end up having to cut an open water blank down for t

Looking to build a need rod strictly for 6wt dry line. Should I go with a 5wt at 1.5 oz,. ENR 6.76, AA 72 or the 6wt blank at 1.6 oz., ENR 7.15 AA 70. Distance matters as this is for lake application, thoughts? As the tittle says I'd like to try the Quickway blank. Thanks for your thoughts. Denis

Ok, being on Lake Superior I don't have access to a lot of surf rod experience... I'm looking to build myself a few long range bank rods for fishing Lake Superior and some of the larger rivers around. I want both rods to be at least 10' long and 2 piece, sounds like a longer blank will get me more range so that would be ideal. The first one: Will mostly throw 4 ounces of lead, 3-5 ounces -

I'm intentionally leaving this pretty generic because I'm interested in the full spectrum of your responses: What is your favorite ice fishing blank? What is most requested by your customers?

I recently gave away a nice 4'6" Browning spinning rod to a friends son. I want to replace it with a build. I am looking for some blank suggestions. My critieria is that I want the same small size, as light as I can get away with for 3 to 4lb Brook trout. I had a quick look on Mudhole but didn't see much except a one St. Croix blank. I already have several St.Croix blanks and I like th

In recent days, I have watched a few different fishing tournaments, as well as a variety of fishing shows. Then, I couple that information with the days that I have spent on the water fishing and have come to the conclusion, that distance casting - as seems to be emphasized by some rod builders seem to be far from the typical fisherman's day. i.e. over the years and having read the hundred

A popular way to fish for lake trout at Flaming Gorge Reservoir is to troll 80# steel line to get big lures down to the bottom. But, I'm having a hard time finding the right blank. I was told by a former rod builder there that he used 7'6" E-Glass blanks from Seeker but that was 20 or 30 years ago and he didn't know what current blanks might be equivalent now. Snags are common so fast a

I am building some gaff hooks using Mud Hole's gaff kits for lake trout/northern pike for the up coming ice fishing season. I don't know what to put on the point of the hook to prevent it from getting dull and to keep it from sticking into things/people. I have seen clear tubing placed over the shaft of the hook with an end of the tubing on the point but I doubt it will streatch as needed when it

Hi everyone! I'm from Sweden and completely new to the world of rod building. I want to build myself a spinning rod (for fixed spool reel) to use for sea trout along the coast where I live. That means lure weights around 5-25g (up to around 1 oz) and rod length around 9-11'. The problem is that although we have many rod builders here they are almost all only building fly rods. That means th

I'm looking for a rod blank that will cast a decent dry fly and can be used to fish nymphs sizes 14 to 20. Would you say the Rainshadow RX7, 4 or 5 WT. would fit those requirements? I'm thinking it would, but opinions are always appreciated. Thanks

I am interested in recommendations for blank and fly line for steelhead in the "steelhead alley" streams around Eerie PA. Streams are narrow, Almost all short roll casts (few overhead casts) Usually only little fly line outside of the tip, Light tippets (4 or 6lb test) Longish leaders Ocassionally fish small streamer flies but it's usually drag free drift fishing mostly with

I am looking for some ideas/ recommendations for a fly rod. I know this has been covered already, but I could not find it... The setting is a moderately deep trout reservoir. The most productive end of the lake is shore to shore weeds, but where the old stream bed wound through is clear of weeds but full of snags from the trees that were not logged off when the dam was built. So you have th

Wanting o build a couple of spiral wrap trolling rods for kokanee/trout/land lock kings Prefer a one piece, 7'-8, glass-composite-graphite? I read about using a Seeker CSP702-1, however I could not find such blank on their catalog, I found a SP702 under the spining section though. Thanks!

The amount of collective knowledge on this site is tremendous! I was wondering if anyone on this board knows of any individual or company that custom rolls graphite rod blanks for freshwater application (light spinning and fly designs)? There are more models and types of rod blanks available then ever before but I still can't find what I want. I'm interested in buying only a small number of blank

I'm looking for 40-50" solid graphite blanks that would be for ice fishing for lake trout. These need to be good and stout rods. I've got some solid fiberglass blanks, but I'd like to find some graphite blanks that would be lighter and faster action. Anyone know where to go?

Last week I was fishing one of the Tennessee river lakes in North MS. The water temp was 47F and the air temp was 40F. Since I'm pretty slow to figure out patterns it took most of the day to figure out the fish were holding on steep points in 25-35'. (Caught 1 small "spot" in about 38') My buddy and I had been fishing jerkbaits, carolina rigged worms, and 3/4oz football jigs most of

I use minima 4 fly and spinning guides for most my spinning and casting rod builds. Now i am venturing into an area i seldom go: light fly rods. I want to build a small 8 ft 4 wt fly rod to use this winter. First question: Using a 4 wt line and nail knots for leader and backing what size guides would i use? Would 4 or 5's be too small? Second Q: For my stripping guides i was tossing around t

I picked up a mudhole gaff hook kit for some ice fishing lake trout friends of mine. I turned my own grip out of block EVA foam. Im not real thrilled with an EVA grip. Under extreme cold conditions I am concerned pieces will chip off when the grip gets knocked around when it is well below zero. Anyone have experiences other than EVA that they can share? Cork tape? Flocked heat shrink tube? I
