Does anyone know if you can get Orvis blanks anywhere other than the Superfine series (T3 for example)? I don't recall seeing any blanks offered in the latest catalog other than Superfines.

I live in Michigan and I've only built Fly Rods, Spin Cast, Bait Cast, Trolling Rods and Surf Rods used in this area. Two years ago I met a guy on-line from New Orleans. After several months of E-Mails I invited him up here to do some Salmon and Lake Trout Trolling on Lake Michigan. In return He invited me to New Orleans to fish the South Pass with him. For me to take him out fishing for a week i

I'm planning a 10' 6 wt. fly rod (Rainshadow RX7 3pc. blank) for fishing Lake Erie tribs for steelhead. I plan on using double foot snakes for this project and was looking for suggestions on guide sizes for this application. Since the rod will sometimes be used in freezing conditions, does it make sense to use larger guides to reduce icing? I'm debating using 12 and 10 strippers with #3, #2, and

I've been practice casting a 9' 8wt that I built, using WF8F line, both for practice and to evaluate the castability and accuracy of the rod. Not being more than an average caster (as far as I know) I was wondering what sort of distance would be considered adequate? I'm not counting the length of the practice leader I'm using, and standing next to a 100' tape measure I'm getting consistent 60-6

I'm wanting to build a Lake Trout ice rod with a spiral wrap. 46" is about the maximum length I want to build. Any longer and it doesn't fish well inside a house and even when fishing outside I'm too far away from the hole and it makes landing a fish more difficult. Does anyone out there have any experience with spiral wrapping shorter rods like that? Since casting isn't an issue, does t

I have fished and built spinning and casting rods for some time but now I am venturing into the flyfishing world. From what I have learned a beginner should start with a moderate action rod. With this in mind I am looking at building an 8ft 6in St Croix SCII blank. Guide spacing I can figure out, but what baffles me is guides and sizes. 1 or 2 strippers(12 &10) ? and snakes 4(8"s)

OK I know this is a little off but the board seems slow today. I was curious as to the most common geographical location of builders. It appears that the majority of the builders here are from the Coast be it West or East. California seems to pop up a lot. Myself , I am from Indiana just ten minutes south of Lake Michigan. Not totally landlocked!!! Mark Schulte

Morning, I may not have my terminology right but here goes. We have a small lake in our area (about 800 acres) that gets to a depth of 215 feet. There are lake trout in the lake. A local angler wants to build some trolling rods similar to an old Fenwick fiberglass trolling rod that he has (7 ft). He has what he says are "metal carbide" guides with a roller tip for a tip top. He insiste

Has anyone have any experience with the 2s60lf4 blank? My son is planning a trip up to the Grand Tetons as part of a college credit course, and needs a pack rod. He doesn't fly fish, but is a whiz with light and ultralight spinning equipment. I understand that targeted species are Artic Grayling (lake fishing), and Brook Trout, (stream fishing). Any help would be greatly appreciated, both in blan

Wife and I are going to be in the Spokane area mid-July. We are traveling 3 hours east to N. Montana to stay at a cousins ranch and do some brook fishing. Would like to fish some other areas for different species and wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I would love to flyrod for pike, salmon, or anything not available here in the midwest. I know a little off topic, but we seem to have fo

I have decided to go with a new Lamiglas G 1307 spinning rod - 81/2ft, 8 to 12 lb, 2 pc, med action, fast taper, rod to use on the large trout (20 lbs) in Lake Pend Oreille in Idaho. This is probably not the proper forum for this question - and if you throw me out of here I will understand - but, do any of you have any suggestions on reel selection? - 95% of the time the rig will be used to fi

I am looking for opinions or sugestions for a 7-81/2 foot trolling rod for lake trout. Would want to put roller guides, med-med hvy action. Since I really do not have alot of experience in this type of fishing, I figured I would come ask some experts! I guess I need to get out more & away from just surf & saltwater rods! Thanks! OK Folks I admit I am new to building rods but I have a customer that I don't know how to handle his request. By not having fished his style I don't have any real ideas as to what he really needs. This is what he wants: Fiberglass not more than 6 feet, a reel seat that will hold a level wind Penn reel for wire line, and "guides that wont cut through in a season or two of fishing". Now

I have seen a few rods (a pic of a factory Sage rod in Angler's Wkshp mag) with the cork turned down to a small taper and thread wrapped over it to make a nice looking transition. (thread finished of course). THose of you with experience doing this. would you do it again, what are pros and cons, durability. I had read somewhere to put a thin coat of finish on the cork to make a smooth bed to

I have read and watched the thread below on the spiral wrap. More and more converts add their comments daily. I went over and read what the guys on the AllCoast board had to say after trying it on really big, tough fish with heavy duty equipment. Not a single bad report has come from anyone who has used it and only good things are said about it. Is it possible that for all practical purposes

I have several questions. Every year in early to mid January I take a trip to NW Ontario to fish Lake Trout through the ice. We travel with snowmobiles and tow flip-over style houses. I like to fish outside but all too often it is too cold to do that for extended periods. I'd like to get a few rods built for this trip. I'd like to build at least one new rod and possibly modify two standard

Tom and Dorge thanks for the commentary regarding my question about blank stresses. Nice to know I'm not as"as high tech dumb" as I thought. Next question: where do I find some explaination, theory and practical application of the spiral guide system. The only thing I vaguely recall about this is that MANY MOONS ago there was an article in SWS Magazine about them. Seems to me it had to

Got a guide wanting a striper rod able to handle 50lb striper on Tennessee lakes. I'll meet with him for details next week, but would like to take him some ideas. I know he fishes planer boards and complains he breaks at least 3 heavy Cabelas and Bass Pro rods per year on fish. I'm thinking a Lamiglass GLB 901 or 963 or maybe a GUSA B70H. I could also go Seeker. Any suggestions from the field? C
