I'm going to line out the scenario, and I'm looking for recommendations around a fly outfit based around it. The whole shebang, blank, components, reel, line, etc. This outfit would be mostly for white perch and bream, or whatever you would like to call them. Panfish. My primary use places would be: *I have a very nice 400 acre "pond" stocked with bluegill that opened near my

Hello all and thanks to Rodgeeks for telling me about this site. Now for my question I’m from Virginia and do a lot of kayak fishing in Virginia and in Outer Banks. The problem I’m having is find a rod that I could use for both areas. Fast tip for casting lighter weight lures and worms for the rivers here in Va but have enough back bone for the sound side of Outer Banks when fishing live shrimp a

Building up a Rodgeeks RG-42 for a 7-year old's Christmas gift and just can't help thinking that these might make a terrific ice rod for smaller (3 - 8#) lake trout. Anyone else wiggle one yet? - limber tip and nice backbone. Just wondered what your thoughts were, thanks

I'm adding to my quiver of long fly rods for fishing from my pontoon and float tube. Several years ago I built a 10' 5 wt. Dan Craft Black Canyon. The rod turned out beautiful but the action is too fast for me. Does anyone have experience with the 10' Dan Craft GXT blanks? Alternatiavely, a long blank from CTS (9'6" or longer)? I generally fish larger lakes and reservoirs (Henry's Lake

Seen a few comments about this blank, was wondering if anyone else has built it and had thoughts on it. I've built the quickline in 5, 7, and 8, and while I like the blanks they are certainly fast. Listed weights seem a bit heavier than quickline but the blanks are also 3" longer. I need to build a 10' 6wt for myself and I need to build another 8 so if I could get some more feedback on this

Just got back from Canada and we did some trolling for Lake Trout and since I don't troll much, I bought a couple cheap medium light Cabela's whuppin sticks a few years back before I started building. They work but they're a little heavy. I'd like to build a couple lighter rods to troll Lake Trout and maybe walleyes but don't want to build anything expensive because I don't troll often. The ro

Last week I was on one of my semi monthly trips to the Mt Home, Ar area and as someone very new to rod building I wanted to stop by and visit, buy a few things and perhaps pick a brain. Although the shop was currently closed Mr Schneider's wonderful wife was more than happy and sweet to take care of me. She herself being a rod builder she was able to educate me a bit as well and help me with a fe

I just used a new build 8 wt fly rod with REC snake guides and tiptop on bones and noticed at times that there was a "screeching" coming from the rod when highly loaded, both on casts and when fighting fish. I think I've heard of this on the forum before, but don't remember the details. Can anyone give details? I'm hoping it's from the tiptop-I can easily replace that.

Roger, you advised me on this rod on 1/17. 40" casting, 8.5' from butt to center of reel seat. Roughly how far ahead of the reel's level wind would would you locate the butt guide? ( #10 Minima double ft.) Thanks, Lynn

I've have been reviewing all the different threads about painting rod blanks. But my problem is I don't have a spray gun. Is there an option out there for a spray can paint that works well for painting rod blanks? I'm trying to make a brightly colored rod tips to see the action on a fiberglass blank.

have had several customer come in with their high end spey/switch rods and they all snapped the tip sections off any where from 6 -16 inches mind you that these are all the longer versions 11'-6" -14 ' in 4 -6 wt they all claimed they were jut doing simple loop casts from talking to them it strikes me as they don't know the proper technique for that style of cast I tried to explain that t

Plan to build a couple deep crank rods using RX6 FT905 blanks and the guide spacing provided from Batson (CB76MH). Budget components for reel seat and EVA grips in hopes to keep them each less than $100 each. Looking for some guidance on a light but dependable (KR concept) guide set for fluorocarbon lines, any recommendations? Thanks. PS, only doing 3 builds this winter, doing more ice fishing

One idea is that switching from right to left hand after the cast may help avoid hand cramps when making many casts during a long fishing day. Others feel that switching wastes time, it is a personal choice, neither right or wrong.

I have spent more time looking at this site than my wife in the last 3 months.  I have my rod wrapper built (thank you for all the great ideas) and ready to start ordering parts to make my first rod.  For my first rod I would like to make a Sturgeon Ice Rod.  Since I will be using this rod in a portable house and room will be tight I think I will build it to around 42” with a bait caster reel sea

So just joined and already my 2nd question, sorry! The info on here is priceless. I'm no stranger to forums and proper etiquette so I only ask the questions AFTER I have researched properly to see if I can get an answer without bugging you guys with yet another thread. Alas, I could only find 1 relevant post on this and it was in 2009: The question, as per my subject line, is what are th

I've had a request to make a short jigging rod specifically to target lake trout. The client wants a conventional reel 48" rod using 20 # braid and 10-12# leader. I have no experience building anything this short (other than ice rods) or light (I build mostly salt water rods). I assume I'm going to have to start with a longer rod and cut it down but would really appreciate some suggestion

I've only built a couple of ice rods, I live in AZ and have never been ice fishing. A buddy wants a gift rod for his brother for lake trout thru the ice. He describes what he wants as: 1. 36" or a little longer, no shorter 2. A lot of backbone but some flexibility in the tip 3. 6 to 8 guides, more is better 4. baitcasting reel seat Any suggestions on a blank? Mudhole has a couple

well it is that time again the boat made a splash hitting the water and getting thew bugs out I took some time to try out my new rod for trout and salmon works great but only caught lake trout and the season for them is closed here but looking forward to a good season. I have started to work on a new build all so a super light 6'6" spinning rod just for pan fish spring has sprung for me

Hi there, I'm putting new guide on a old fiberglass rod to try it as a downrigger rod. The rod seem to be a light power(maybe too light...we'll see soon). I like to play with fish and dont like to "winch" them onboard. I'll target spring salmon on lake Ontario and lake trout on other lake later this summer. I bought some minima guide and I wondering if I need to underwrap the guid

Hi guys I am trying to find a good blank to use for ice fishing up at Lake Winnipeg. We will be going for big green backs so I need a bigger rod than the usual ice rod. I was trying to find some thing in the 42 inch to 48 inch rod range with a med heavy to heavy power but I am having hard time finding anything over 36 for that power. Any help would be great. Thanks Justin

I didn't see a lot of threads for ice fishing blanks. I want to build my own ice rods because I could make three or more (depending on the blank) for the same price as buying one ice rod or combo. Of course the great part is being able to choose the types of materials used for guides, thread, the blank itself even. Hoping this will be a friutful hobby for me. I already have been tying my own flie

I am currently searching for a 9/10' fly rod for bass, steelhead and some salt water fishing. A stiff fast action type seems to be the obvious choice. I've steered clear of stiff rods because of the suggestion that stiff rods quickly point out the mistakes that I make casting moderate and glass rods. Now recently got a lesson fly casting and the my instructor said that I cast very well on small

From conversation between some people, ive decided on buying a batson solid glass rod blank for my laker rod and first try at rod building, and I think im going to cut it down to 36" (tentatively). The next step here now is deciding on guides; size, spacing, style, etc. Im sure there are 100's of combinations one could do, and I hope to experiment with that down the road. But for now, id

Pretty much any relevant thread was 2-6 years old, so I figured I'd ask. Might have better luck on an ice fishing forum obviously... Does anyone make a fair number of ice rods? I'm looking for input on good quality ice blanks. I bought a few MHX blanks to build some ice rods out of, but that's only because my options seemed so few. Are there any other places to buy a good ice rod blank fro
