No sir. It;s really no different than a spinning or all on top layout. You just build according to what you're trying to accomplish Re: spiral wrap

guys like Kil Song have used spiral wrapped rods to land BFT in the 700-800lbs range... i'd say NO LIMIT. Re: spiral wrap

ok, I had a conversation with a fella that said he wouldn't use spiral on a rod that uses less than 15# line, this is why I was asking.
His oppinion was spiral should start at 15 pound line and up. Re: spiral wrap

I've done spirals on 2-8 lb kokanee rods. There's no lower limit that I'm aware of. Re: spiral wrap

I use the spiral wrap on light (2-6#) test rods with micro guides.
Spiral wrap was the only way to go to prevent line slap with those tiny guides. C2 Re: spiral wrap

Yep i use spiral wraps on all my lake trout and kokanee trolling rods. They sit in the down rigger rod holders so much nicer. When all on top the rods always want to lay over on their side, spiral wrapped, they sit perfectly . Plus you can get away with a lot less guides especially when using micros. Re: spiral wrap

I've been using spirals with 2-8 lb line for nearly 30 years on my light and ultra-light baitcasters. Spirals are a necessity with the light rods to keep the tip sections from twisting in an alarming fashion when loaded. They work great with light line. Re: spiral wrap

Great then.
Im wanting to build a MHX frog rod spiral, this will be my first spiral build. Is there any more tips you guys have beyond Tom's book i have. I will copy his degrees he says but was wondering if there was anything else added up to this day? Re: spiral wrap

I would look more into the simple spiral. If you do a search here I am sure you will find plenty of information on it. Re: spiral wrap

Tony,
This is only my opinion and I know what opinions are like but if I was going to cast a spiral wrapped rod (and I do) i'd stay away from the simple spiral. I can't give you any great reasons why but I can't see that method not reducing your casting distance. The angles just look to great not to have an adverse affect. A progressive spiral (2-4) uses a more even and less obtrusive set of angles to accomplish the same thing. But again, I can't prove it. Re: spiral wrap

I can assure you no distance is lost using the simple spiral. I built my topwater rod using that method. One caveat, I would add a single bumper guide if using braid just to protect the rod's finish. I use mono for this rod so it's not an issue for me. Thanks, Chad Huderle Huderle Custom Rods Prior Lake, MN Re: spiral wrap

Chad,
I'm glad you're happy with it but that's not the route I would take. I just see too many issues with it. Again, if your boat's floating who am I to judge. Re: spiral wrap

I will have to agree with Matthew on this subject for the very same reasons.
However, certainly a simple spiral will get the line off of the rod. I just think that for some applications, there is a better method. Good luck Roger Re: spiral wrap

I landed several Salmon on my last fall with 10 1/2" Batson using 12# Siglon and 8# tippet. I've switched to using a spiral wrapped baitcaster over a spinning rod since it's easier to land the offering exactly whre I want it. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
