I have asked this same question before and received the same answers. As a matter of fact I've been told that size A HT metallic actually has a higher breaking strength than size A nylon. I'm about to build a 30-60# stand-up rod with all metallic wraps.

Mike Barkley hit on a great point. For instance, take an offshore blank that's rated for 30-80#. When building a rod I find out what weight line will be fished on this rod primarily and also what is the heaviest line to be fished. For the 30# line the blank would bend much less than if you were going to use 60# or 80# line. This 'will' affect how many guides you will need to place on the bla

1355. Re: Spine finders
You can find an example of a 'live center' spine finder on the Mudhole site. The marble would work on the same premise...allowing the blank to roll freely showing you the prominent side.

Even with a guide placement chart/program you still need to do a static test to be sure of your line distribution. Strictly using a chart for guide placement puts us back to where factory rods are.
After your butt guide is placed, the fishing line tells you where to place the remaining guides.
This of course is just my opinion.

Can a GF700H throw a 3oz bait? Maybe a 700M for lighter line?

Imagine a titanium framed, gold cermet ringed #20 turbo style guide. That thing would be $50 by itself! lol

If you didn't throw away your epoxy after applying to the wraps, go touch it. If it's tack free, apply your second coat. I'd guess that if your room temperature is 68-72, you should be good after 12 hours. Given adequate temperatures I have no problem re-applying LS after 6 hours (sometimes much less).

Eric asked a great question. How bad is it bowed? A great many rod blanks are bowed...it's sort of an expected thing. I have older Loomis' that are mad crooked. If it bothers you, build on the natural curvature of the blank as suggested already.

If it has a substantial bend in it, build right on that. The end product will look much better. If you find the spine & it is very pronounced yet not even close to your bend, you may consider a spiral wrap...still building on that bend.

I'm curious as the the difference in weight between the BYAG & BMNAG. A fair compairson...30 ring for 30 ring...or something along those lines.

I also had no trouble Tuesday 'morning'. As I said they were working on their system Tuesday evening and the site was down for a period of time. When the site went back up Tuesday night I got the error messages.
As of right now, Saturday 9:56 am EST, the site is working fine on my IE. Just tried a couple pages and added an item to the shopping cart...no problemo. No errors on the page....w

I downloaded Netscape 7.2 last night and the Mudhole site works fine. I'm still having problems with the IE browser.
When using IE there is an 'ERROR' message in the bottom left corner (just above the task bar & 'start' button) on every page I go to on the Mudhole site. It seems I'm unable to add any items to the shopping cart as I've tried a variety with no sucess. When clicking on t

Again I show my ignorance. On the cover of Mudhole's cataloge there are flyrods. A couple of those have cork grips that are very 'marled' in appearance...like there are voids in the cork. Is that a type of burl? What kind of cork grips are those? Is there someone that markets complete grips or is it a 'glue it up & turn it yourself' type of game?

1372. Re: more frustration
Don't forget to 'gently' scuff the blank where the seat will reside. This will allow a good bond to that spot. The inside of the seat itself is probably already rough enough after that reaming. Follow Putter's suggestions and you won't have any problems.

They were updating the system Tuesday night. I had problems later in the night, but the cart worked fine early Wednesday morning. Early Wednesday afternoon there were 'errors on the page' again and the cart would not work properly (ie unable to add items). It's been that way ever since for me.

Thaks to everyone.
Mike, I've heard something along those same lines before (about the metallic being as strong/stronger than nylon). Was looking for some reassurance....Thanks!

1376. Metallic Guide Wraps
I've used metallic thread for guide wraps on smaller rods, but I'm interested in doing a 30-50# saltwater rod. I would prefer to stay with size A, but I'm wondering about it's strength on a rod this size. I think I've read before that the metallics are as strong as nylon. If I were using size A nylon, I wouldn't be asking this question...maybe I shouldn't be anyway? Confidence in the material

The best thing about using this method vs. Adat-a-Caps is that it's FREE! That way I can afford those extra syringes Billy is making me buy!

1378. Re: Mixing Rod Bond
Eyeballing it is all you need. There's no reason to mess up any other type of measuring device just to have to clean it up. I also use two popsickle sticks for dipping & just pile up equal 'looking' blobs on my mixing surface. I normally mix on cut up shipping boxes...lord knows I have plenty of those lying around.

I don't remember who it was, but a few weeks ago someone suggested that I try something.
I had previously mentioned how I don't like using syringes as they tended to get epoxy all over them when I drew the parts out of the bottles. Someone suggested drilling a hole in the bottle top to stick the syringe through. I did that and it works great! I drilled a hole that fits the syringe tip lik

I've had one (I think 6-12# 2-piece) sitting in the corner since December. Maybe I should get around to building it? It's a beautiful blue/green color...not sure what color wraps to go with. I also thought about using an aluminum fly seat. I've not done that before and wonder about the practicality? A blank this nice deserves something a little out of the ordinary. Any ideas?
Hmm...maybe
