Rod Recycling - good?

Howdy,

Is there any reason I shouldn't use an old rod for my first attempt at rod building? I have stripped an old Shimano Triton 25-50lb rod down to the fiberglass and plan to use ot to build a 30lb class albacore rod. Other than a pronounced spine in the top 18-24" (from leaning against a wall for years?) the blank appers to be in good condition.

Thanks,

Jonathan

It would be good practice and an excellent starter project. I'd go right ahead if I were you.

Two typos and one encouraging reply - Thanks Tom. Now how about "Edt post" and "Delete Post" optoins? :)

Actually, that sounds like a "bend" in the rod, not a "spine". The spine exists even in a straight blank, you can read up on that here.

Nothing wrong with it at all. I'm always on the search for old rods at yard sales, thrift stores and pawn shops to rebuild or restore.

If it has a substantial bend in it, build right on that. The end product will look much better. If you find the spine & it is very pronounced yet not even close to your bend, you may consider a spiral wrap...still building on that bend.
