Thanks Geoff, I dug out some data and found that my 7' GLX 3wt has an ERN of 3.27 and I have DT 4wt line on it's reel. My Sage SP 5wt has an ERN of 5.05 and I have 6wt line on that reel. Looks like my hillbilly verticle casting stroke needs a +1 line. On my 9wt I have 9wt line and I sort of roll my wrist in a Lefty Kreigh fashion so I can make a longer casting arc. Maybe my casting style need

It's a Colton Tradewinds 10wt - very popular with the guys on Stripers Online due to the stout butt sections these rods have. I was going to build one from a blank but the reviews were so good on this rod, plus they're on sale for 40% off, I thought I'd try one. I had a reel with some 9wt line and went out yesterday and I was surprised how well I was able to cast it. Next time I'm at Cabelas

Well I think I'm as confused as I was 10 years ago. I was under the impression that the ERN would establish which weight fly line would be suitable for casting for that peticular rod - I'm not sure what I've learned from the system anymore. Seems like the more I think I know the less I actually know.

I decided to go with 10wt rod that has a great reputation from the guys on the Stripers Online forum. It came while I was gone and I got to check it today. The Action Angle is exactly 65 degrees so it is a fast action as advertised. But it took 135 pennies to deflect it 36" of it 108" length which comes up to an ERN of 13.41. I was hoping for somewhere between 10wt to 11wt, but a 13.4w

I think I get it. Looks like the hardest part is setting up the "holder" and ensuring that it holds the rod/blank perfectly level. Set it up initially with 12" of the tip sticking out and deflect that 4" with a bag of pennies and measure the AA (yipe) and do this 6 more times. I've got an old Bass Pro rod that I think I'll practice on first !

Thanks Tom, your last sentence makes sense - I'll read the CCS Big Picture about a dozen more times and hopefully the light will come on.

I have a Sage RPLXi 9 1/2' 9wt that was built to Sage's specs years ago by a rodmaker from Minnesota. I rechecked it today and set my AA scale on a level and I was able to let the rod settle and I'm confident my measurements are dead on - 75 pennies (ERN 9.38) and an AA of a hair under 65 - so using Jim Spooner's reasoning the rod is a mod-fast action. It's a great rod for Salmon as I can maneuve

I've used Flex Coat regular and lite, LS Supreme, Permagloss, and Threadmaster regular and lite. With Tom's finishing articles in RodMaker magazine on the drop, rotate, and wick off method - a hack rodmaker like me has managed to get some impressive results using two coats of Threadmaster Lite. For me it's like jumping to light speed

If the rod is bent (as in a fish fighting position) and the tip section is pointed towards the fish, why would it have to most stress/pressure on it?

I spend alot of time at Cabelas looking at rods and have never seen one with a "27X" label on them. I've never seen a factory spinning with guides that equal length + one more. I have one factory rod - a Gloomis 8 1/2' STR 1025S. It originaly had 7 guides, I rebuilt the handle section and converted the butt section into a 2 guide "concept" for a toal of 8 guides. The factory

Well it makes sense to me James - alot more than the 27x choker placement or the multiple blank flexing static test for guide spacing (it's just a me thing I suppose). Many years ago I posted a thread asking if you took a blank, passed it around to 20 different rodmakers for static testing, what would the variations be in the guide spacings for that same blank? The consensous was there would be c

Thanks Tom, I don't quite understand your first two sentences - are saying the first guide doesn't need to be that close, even for casting 10wt line?

I was at Cabelas yesterday and really liked the Ross Worldwide Essence FW 1090-4 fly rod (I know, a 4pc). For $250 I could have very easily brought this rod except the first guide seemed awfully close to the tip, about 3" - 3 1/2" or so. I can't see this helping in fishfighting as the upper section should straighten out and point towards the fish. I was wondering if the close place

Thanks Drew, I have a Sage RPLXi 9wt but I like to be prepared - plus a 10wt gives me the opportunity to build another rod! Whether the majority here say there's no difference in a 2pc versus a 4pc, in my own mind physics tells me otherwise. The 2 extra ferrules has to add weight (specs indicate 4 pc blanks weigh more to begin with), has to dampen the action (it's physically impossible to sleeve

Unless I run across a bargain on a used rod, I'm probably going to build a 9' 10wt for stripping streamers to Salmon. Price is not an issue (within reason), I can live with fast action, must be a 2 piece, and landabilty of a feist Salmon in swift river currents is paramount. These are all listed as 10 wts ranging from mod-fast to fast and I probably would not notice a .4oz difference in weight.

Thanks Drew, I just checked my Teeny sinking "whatever it's called" on one of my spare spools that has about a 36' of heavy dark blue shooting head in front of something that resembles a shooting line to me. On my 9wt, it's fairly easy to shoot this with the coils piled up at my feet from a boat. It's much more difficult when I'm butt deep in strong river currents and my main objective

Well that should work then, if my rod's ern is 82/83 pennies and the first 30' of the line weighs close to 280 grains I should be all set, thanks.

You've got it about right Todd. Actually I'm going to build a 10wt fly rod to throw leeches and streamers, with maybe an egg dropper, at the end of a furled leader to holding Salmon over gravel. Since the current in the river is rather swift, I'll probably go with a weight-forward sink tip to get the offering down immediatley so I can start stripping. I don't mind paying a few bucks for a good l

So if I had a need to cast 60'-70' of line, I should drop down one line weight to do so? Thanks.

If a fly rod has an ERN of 8.03 (63 pennies) and the first 30' of a fly line specs out exactly as an 8wt, what is the effective length the fly line can be aerialized before the rod is overloaded or the loops/cast starts to deteriorate - by a Joe Blow average caster? Thanks.

No Willie, it's not a winding check - it's a TRANSITION ring - at least that's how I would define it. I'm pretty certain it had a short extension (which now is hidden in the picture) that sleeved up into the bottom of the reel seat.
