Thanks Michael, I'm very familiar with Don Morton's Equal Angle/Increasing Angle guide placement. I even made my own template with his help. I have a 13' 3 piece Lamiglas Certified Pro blank on order and I'll contact Todd as well for additional input. Thanks again.

Here it is Cliff. It's also on the top right hand side of Angler's Workshop website. If the one I list below doesn't work, try their's.
As far as the story pole not catching the differences in different blanks, I think it does. The instructions are while the blank is horizontal, deflect the tip down until the "bend" reaches the butt guide. Seems to me that regardless whether you

I have my bullet-proof vest on so I'll ask the question - does any of the old time rodbuilder's still use this method for guide spacing? I stumbled across the article from the Angler's Workshop website and found it very interesting. Since I still struggle with flexing a blank 1/4, then 1/2, then 3/4 and knowing the difference between a good line angle versus a bad line angle in the static distri

What do you think the butt diameter on a 20 footer would be . . . . an inch and a half?

In looking at the Recoil tip tops, REC makes a fly rod tip top called the RTTUL (ultra light) and a RSCT tip top to match the Recoil RSPG spinning guides. The RTTUL is a single loop whereas the RSCT looks to be a double wire loop that matches the RSPG spinning guides. In a 5/64 tube, the RTTUL weighs .200 grams and the RSCT weighs .280 grams. Wouldn't it make more sense to use the lighter wei

726. Re: Lathe chucks
If you're just turning cork grips and wooden reelseat inserts, I think a self centering 3 jaw chuck is easy and suitable for the task. If you have a metal turning lathe and plan to turn small engine cylinders and pistons requiring tight tolerances, then a 4 jaw chuck and a dial indicator would be appropriate - IMO.

Thanks Stan and Randy, I too have compared the weights of tip top vs guides and have the same results. What I don't have is the difference in the weight of thread and epoxy between a minimal amount for a tip top versus a full wrap and epoxy of a Forhan wrap on the guide foot. If there's a major difference in the total of everything then maybe there's something to it. But if there's minimal diff

Hi Todd, I too struggled with the notion of having to buy extra guides to follow the New Guide Concept primer. So I taped several pieces of white poster board together and drew a straight line lengthwise on one side, with a few short parallel lines at each end. Since most reels (and all of mine) have a 4 degree upsweep, I then drew another line angled up toward's the first line at 4 degrees (whi

I've only found one photo example of a running guide being used as a tip top. Although Domenic's wraps looks good, I'm struggling with the fact that this guide with this amount of thread and epoxy will be lighter overall than a lightweight tip top, a bit of guide adhesive, and 5-6 turns of thread underneath plus a small dab of finish. Is a runnig guide as a tip top really that much

Just remembered I used an REC RSLS seat on a rod that had an ERN of 9.38 which I use now for Salmon. It cam with a transition ring that fit nicely up against a small Sage type fighting butt. I'd say it six of one, half dozen of the other - pick one!

I've used the Struble U15 and like it very well on a 7wt I built. If you check the specs, the U15 has a smaller OD than the REC plus the Struble comes with a fighting butt. The only other difference is the sliding band on the REC stays in line with the reel seat but I don't see that as big deal. I'd go with whichever one you can get at the best price.

I got an email this time to validate my login procedure. And I double checked my driver's license, CCW permit, Visa, and library card - they've all got my name listed the same way I spell it!
