Thank you! Those were interesting reads. I was unaware of any of that.

What is the Federal Excise tax that some retailers charge on rod blanks? $10.00 per blank.

Thanks again Roger, And just so I can wrap my head around all of this a little more, under the above recommendations, am I still using the spool diameter x 27 to locate the choke guide, or is that also a guideline that can be deviated from as necessary? I know people always say lay out the guides and test cast. But for a beginner like me, without some defined starting points, the test cast

Roger, thanks for the help. please clarify, did you mean RV25H, RV16H, KW10M and then 8's to the tip (KW or KT, my choice)? Also, when you said "I would place the 30 at 34 inches" did you mean to say the 25?

Brian, are you suggesting using the 12 as the choke guide then? I thought the choke guide was the first runner, an 8 in this scenario?

I am building an NFC 1167-2 H power F action surf rod 11' 6" . Purpose is to cast swim bait type lures in the 3-5 oz range. Planned reel is a Penn Slammer III 4500 (spool diameter 55mm). 20-40lb braid range, most likely 30lb. Reel seat is set at 26" from butt to mounted reel stem. I have used the spool dia. x 27 to locate the choke guide at 1485mm from spool face. From other sour

I am looking for advice on whether I can apply Threadmaster thread epoxy over Perma Gloss applied to the thread wraps. I have thread wraps over my carbon fiber wrap and applied Perma Gloss to the threads and carbon fiber, one coat. I would like to add more depth to the thread wraps (not the carbon fiber). I know I can apply more coats of Perma Gloss on the threads, but I plan to use Threadmast

I am looking to install a carbon fiber grip on the butt end of a surf rod build. Based on the diameter of the blank and the preferred final grip diameter, the urethane core under the carbon fiber wrap would end up being only about 1/8" thick. Even assuming I could ream it out that thin without breaking it, is 1/8" too thin for a urethane core? Is 1/8" thick cork tape a suitab

Well I see now that I missed the answer to this question in the CCS articles themselves. The front fulcrum should be located at 10% of the total blank length. On a 11'6" blank that is well short of the planned 27"-28" front edge of the reel seat.

I have a question regarding the proper set-up for CCS measurements on surf rods in the 10'-12' range. I read the archived posts and it appears that we use the total blank length to determine the required deflection distance, and not just the portion of the blank forward of the reel seat, based on the theory that the full blank is at work. I get that. What I am wondering though is that when I s

Mark, it takes two identical blanks to make one blank with the tip over butt ferrules, given the overlap at the ferrules. I will find the article and post the info tonight. Where can I find more on the CARL process?

The plan is to use tip over butt ferrules using the instructions in the RodBuilder magazine article. I will post the issue details later today. Just to be clear, I have never done this before, as stated this is an experiment.

Herb, correct that is the idea, if I actually do it. Still researching, and will practice on the other blanks. I plan to run CCS tests on the stock blanks, and static loads tests also, to compare with the same tests on the finished multi piece blanks. I may end up with nothing other than some experience and a little knowledge of perhaps little value. I am willing to take that risk at this poi

Given some of the recent threads, I just want to post a very positive customer experience I had with NFC. I ordered last week 2 of their blanks from their annual sale. They are already shipped and scheduled to arrive this week. As it should be, of course. But not only that, I emailed them today with some questions I had related to an experimental build I was planning, and unsolicited they off

Do sub freezing temps have any effect on graphite blanks? Like when banks get delivered to my house here in Wisconsin and left outside for hours in temps possibly well below freezing? Any need to be concerned about extreme cold temps?

I am looking for help in evaluating blank weights amongst comparable blanks in the range of 10' 11' and 12'. More specifically how much does 1oz or 2oz or 3oz etc, difference make in a blank in this size range? For example if I am looking at 2 12' blanks both rated at 2-4 oz lures, how much difference in performance or user fatigue will there be? At what point does a difference in weight be

Looks like the 1167-2 is 10.76 oz 60/40 split from what I saw on a different forum. But I don't know how old that info is.

Yes, I would like to know the blank weight of the SUR 1167-2 (psi-lmx) Also, is this a 50/50 split or something else. And does anyone have any info on what is the sweet spot for casting with this blank? Thanks.l

Thanks Lynn. I already chamfered the interior edge after the cut, but I used a round rat-tail file. I wrapped the ferrules and epoxy is on. I really like how this rod turned out, only my third complete build. Now I just need to figure out how to match epoxied threads with the blank color. I did test wraps with alcohol, but still didn't end up with a good match that I wanted. One thing I lea

I just finished building a multi-piece rod with tip over butt ferrules. I am pretty pleased with the outcome but I have one issue that I need to address. One of the female ferrules touches the guide wrap epoxy on the adjoining male ferrule. I am concerned that possibly over time or maybe right away when I really tighten the two pieces together, that the epoxy will get damaged cosmetically (thi

Update. I layed out the guides (all Fuji KW's) using 30, 25, 16 to 6's on out. I used 4 running guides including the choke. It looks good. I located the reduction guides using the line from reel spindle to top of choker, and got a perfect bullseye looking through the runners to the choke. Concern I have is that when I static load test, the line gap on each side of the third reduction guide (
