I am building a rod on an NFC LMX hybrid 705-1 7'0" Moderate action , MH power. The rod will be used for trolling bottom bouncers for walleyes. The rod will be held in my hand, not placed in a rod holder. The rod will be held horizontal to tip slightly down when trolling. So I am trying to choose a reel to match the rod. I have done a lot of this fishing but never really paid attention

Hello I am wondering if there is any "easy" way to reverse the motor rotation on a CRB variable speed dryer motor with a slip clutch? I did a search but was unable to find any specific answer and I am wondering if maybe there are new developments. My single speed dryer motor would randomly run in opposite directions each time I turned it on, but this new one does not do that. I am

Thank you Ancelmo. Are you familiar with the Atrex blanks? I see they are marketed as carp rods, which I know nothing about. The heavy and extra heavy power ratings along with the carp rod ratings are making me question if these blanks will excel at throwing 2-3oz lures?

I am looking for recommendations for a 12' to 12'6" surf rod (spinning) that will excel at casting 2 oz. to 3 oz. aerodynamic lures for maximum distance. Primary targets are Roosters and Jacks, etc. Caveat: no section of the blank can exceed 79" in length to fir airline travel tube length restrictions. This basically means it need to be close to a 50/50 split for two pieces. I am aw

VooDoo Rods is a great addition. I have made several purchases over the last couple months. Great service, very fast shipping, and a 15% discount for all future orders after your first $100 purchase (or something like that).

I am looking to build a St. Croix 4T76HF3 (rated for 3/4 - 3 oz, 15-30lb) for an inshore rod used to target roosters, groupers, snappers, sierra, dorado and such in Mexico.  Is my Penn Slammer III 4500 a good fit?  Should I use a single foot guide train using the KR Concept?  Or would I be better off using double foot guides, and if so how do I lay out the reduction train (still KR or maybe 27x s

Thanks Robert, that Game Master looks too heavy duty, but the SlipStream Quartz seems more sized for what I am looking for. However, I was using a St. Croix SCV blank that I built for this purpose and broke the tip on the first day...Hence my search for the composite blend that will not only better match the preferred action, but also maybe a little more durable in the boat. But that history al

Well, I have found these blanks: Rainshadow XCW70MHM (apparently these are MF) Rainshadow RDR70MM Rodgeeks SG70MHM Rodgeeks SGTR70MM Rodgeeks XComp730 (this is MF blank but could be cut down to 7' - 6'9" to make it more moderate?) North Fork Composites Hybrid CB705 Zentron Delta Robert, I wasn't sure which CTS blanks you were referring to. Anyone have any experience with any of t

Lynn, Thanks. I saw those, they are moderate fast- not sure that makes a big difference, but still looking for other options to see what's out there.

I am looking for recommendations for a blank for a rod to be used for back-trolling bottom bouncers for walleyes in Canadian shield lakes. I will be using a baitcasting reel; 1oz to 2oz bottom bouncers; 10-12lb braid. This rod will not be used for casting, but for trolling only, in 6 to 25 feet of water. I will never be putting this rod in a rod-holder, I will be holding it in my hand. My re

My surf rods are 11' -12.5'. Do you recommend adding extra runners? Would this set-up be recommended for casting lures maximum distance? What is the maximum spool diameter this set-up can work with? Will it match up with Shimano Aero Technium 14000 with a 72mm spool diameter?

I am not familiar with this blank, but I would be curious to know what "Centrepin/Float fishing" means and how such a rod would be intended to be used.

Dick, the micro parting tools I am finding look like small gouges (u-shaped blade). I am also seeing micro skews with a 45 degree angle. That seems more like what would work? Do you have a brand name I can search?

Thank you. I will make an extra length to practice a few cuts on. Do you recommend I cut it before or after I apply the Perma Gloss?

I am looking for the best way to cut a home-made carbon fiber handle to get the cleanest, straightest edge to match up to a butt cap or other fitting. This carbon fiber handle will not go inside the adjacent fitting but instead will just butt right up to it. So the cut edge will be exposed and needs to be perfectly straight around the circumference. I am making the handles on my lathe. I am t

Michael what do you use for bait on a Walleye slip bobber set-up? Are you still fishing or slow trolling, or...?

I am not an experienced rod builder but I will throw in my limited experience with trim bands. I started out using the method Tom Kirkman showed in his videos. I was having difficulty with them coming unwrapped before I got the epoxy on (again, I am inexperienced). So I switched to a method similar to what Roger and Herb recommended - using a pull thread to pull the trim band tag ends under t

Tom, I am no expert and I have not done this myself, yet, but others here often recommend using a carnauba paste wax on raw carbon blanks to add a shiny finish without any clear coat. Search carnauba. (First search how to spell it correctly - I didn't!).

One word of caution on the drywall tape. If the epoxy has not set when you slide your reel seat over it, there is a possibility the whole coiled stack may be pulled with the reel seat. The result could be a real seat that sets up not concentric to the blank. Don't ask me how I know... I still use it, but very carefully watch to make sure the stack does not move, etc. Still trying to master t

When you mount the bored stock on a mandrel, how do you secure the stock to the mandrel so it does not spin freely?

I just finished up the last of my Threadmaster epoxy and looking to replace it. I don't know if I have high-build or lite. It does not say either on the hardener bottle or resin bottle. Everything I see for sale says either lite or high-build.

Charles, what do you mean by "blow by"? Line coming off the spool going past the guide ring before going through it? And if using a wide spool reel Like a Shimano Aero Technium (75mm spool diameter) is the RV 25H going to prevent blowby better than a KW30 as a stripper guide? I anticipate your answer is yes based on your previous post, but why does the smaller ring prevent blowby be

Mark, I like the design. Thanks for sharing. The method of having single strands laying on top of the underlying threads looks similar in theory to the Off Angle Inlays that Tom Kirkland demonstrated RodMaker magazine Volume 11 Issue 6, which coincidentally I just received and read yesterday. In the article Mr. Kirkland was discussing "Simple Elegance" easy thread wrap techniques. A

Mike, the folks at NFC told me that the only difference between the "1" and the "3" models is cosmetic. The "1" has a smaller x-pattern, which is sort of visible on the website photos if you look close enough. I have the "1's" and I like them, but I need to find out what reel seats (size) they fit.

I have read many comments here cautioning against using solvents to clean a blank, to avoid problems with epoxy thread finishes. My question is, what can I use to clean a blank before I am ready to apply epoxy for threads or decals? I am an amateur builder and I touch the heck out of my blanks from the day i purchase them, through laying out guides static loading and then test casting. I assum

Roger, I am interested in building a setup with the components you linked to. How do I connect that speed control unit to the motor? Do I have to cut off the male connector and attach two prongs that will fit the blades on the motor? Also, could I use that controller with the 50 rpm motor that they sell as an option?
