So, for my first project i decided to rebuild my 1987 Cabelas Fish Eagle II 4' 6" UL spinning rod. This might not be the best UL rod anymore but it was all the bells and whistles for me when I bought it - my first "good" rod. So its kind of sentimental and a good practice project. I have already replaced the reel seat with a Fuji VSS and removed all the guides. The blank looks

What is the downside to the ambient room temperature being in the range of 63 to 65 degrees? Just extended cure time? Or ineffective cure? Or...?

Is the requirement for precise measurement of hardener and epoxy applicable to both thread finish as well as the paste glue? So many how-to videos show the folks mixing the paste glue components by taking globs of each component on a popsicle stick and then mixing. An approximation of equal at best. If precise measurements of the paste glue components is necessary how do you measure the paste?

"His name is Kirkman, Tom Kirkman."
Yes, sorry, I knew that. I have a brain defect when it comes to names. No disrespect intended Mr. Kirkman...I appreciate all of your help here and elsewhere.

Ok, I found the link to the Special Edition Task Specific Rod Building CD. It is under the RodMaker Magazine link on the left of this page.

in the RodMaker Magazine link to the left, under the blog link, Tom Kirkland states that the new and revised Rod Building Guide will be available in mid to late spring 2019. Is this available yet? If not, will it be announced here when it is? Can we pre-order?

I am confused. I thought the metallic thread was for decorative purposes only, not for the structural guide wraps?

Nicholas, I am not sure when the surf guide was published, but I assume some of the info may be time dated. But it is still an awesome source for beginning info.
Spencer, where can we get that CD?

I am in the research stage of learning the rodbuilding process. Most of the rods I use and plan to build will be surf rods for lures from shore and boats. If you are in the same stage as me I strongly recommend that you get a copy of Rodmaker magazine Volume 18 Issue #3. Tom Kirkland's article in that issue titled "Guide to Building Surf Rods" is an excellent discussion of all of the

Well, I got this all bungled up. I may have mislead you as to the rod. the 7'6" rod is rated heavy power, fast action, lure weights 3/4 to 3oz, line weights 15-30lb. My goal is to throw lures in the 3/4 to 1 1/2 oz range for pargos, cuberas etc, from a boat along the rocky shores in Mexico. I am looking for a rod to use for that purpose but not married to the 4500. That lead to my ques

Thanks all for the responses. This is a great forum! When I posted this question I was doing so as a sort of followup to my other post where I inquired about my Saltist 4500 on a 7'6" rod. The consensus of responses there, as expected, was that the reel was way too big for that 7'6" rod. I assumed then that the reason it was too big was because that big reel would not balance (whatev

Is there a preferred standard for how a rod with reel should balance in your hand? Assuming you are holding the rod by the reel seat, should it be level, butt heavy, tip heavy? Is it entirely personal preference? Depend on the type/length/use of rod?
along the same lines, how do you decide where to mount a reel seat on the butt?
Are there any generally accepted standards to start with, a

If the male end of the ferrule is painted is it still considered a graphite to graphite ferrule? Still ok to use the U-40 lube?

Ha! That is the technique that my grandpa taught me to lubricate a screw before turning it into a tight fit. But I would be concerned that you inadvertently may be introducing many potential particulates or contaminants into the ferrule that way. In a pinch maybe.

The Stradic 4000 weighs 10oz the Saltist 4500 weighs 22oz. I assume that is a critical difference suggesting the saltist is too big

In order to use the KR Concept calculator I need to know the size reel I plan to use. How do I choose a reel size to match a blank? Are there some guidelines to use for primers to match a reel to blank: rod length, weight, power, action, etc; reel weight?
I need a reel for a St Croix 7'6" SCIV HF rod rated for lures 3/4-1.5oz. This rod will be used to throw soft plastic lures for parg

142. U-40 Ferrule Lube
I have been doing a lot of research on ferrules over the last few days. Most of the information (a lot from this forum) is from 15-20 years ago, some more recent. it seems the consensus then was no bees wax and no paraffin, ever. U-40 Ferrule Lube seemed to be a recommended product as it is teflon based, not a wax product, and as a result does not build up on the ferrule and does not attract p

Just curious, what type of carbon fiber are you talking about? Like the carbon fiber you would buy to build your own grips by wrapping over hard foam?

Many blanks are listed specifically as casting blanks and many are listed specifically as spinning blanks. What is the difference between the two, and are they interchangeable under any circumstances.

I am looking for options for a 3 piece travel blank (spinning) for shore and boat fishing for pargo and snappers along the rocky beaches in west Mexico.
I want to be able to cast soft plastics in the range of 1oz to 1 1/2 oz, using 30-40lb braid, with the backbone to pull these fish away from the rocks. Is there such a blank? What do you think of the St Croix SCIV 4T76HF3 3/4-30z 15-30 lb t

I am building a St Croix 6'3" MLXF walleye jigging rod. 2000 size reel, 6-10 lb test line. The KR calculator says I need a 16h, 8H, 5.5M and three running guides plus a tip. What do I use for the running guides? Do I need to use a KB guide for the choke guide and then my choice of the KT's or L's for the rest of the runners? If I am using a KB for the choke guide is that one of the thr

Thanks Herb. You have answered many of my questions over the last several days. I appreciate it. One more question. In the KR Concept calculator, they ask for the distance from the butt end to the spool. I won't really know that until I lay out the rod and reel seat location will I? So is there a way to estimate it?
