Thanks Herb. I will lay it out that way and do some test casting.

I am going to build a 9' travel surf rod on a RodGeeks blank SRF90MMF4 which is a 4pc blank rated for 8-20lb mono and 1/2 to 2 1/2 oz lures. I plan to use a Saltist 4500 spinning reel loaded with 30lb to 40 lb braid targeting Roosters, Jack Crevalle, snappers, etc., casting lures. Given the braid size I am building this rod with a New Guide Concept layout using Fuji KW double foot guides. Us

Update on this build and a new question. After realizing that I wanted to preserve the ability to go up to 40 lb braid but not below 30, I decided to build this rod with a New Guide Concept layout. Using the 27x formula for locating the choke guide, I calculated that the choke guide should be approximately 64 inches from the front face of the spool. (61 mm spool diameter times 27 equals 1647 mm

Question: When building a multi-piece rod with tip over butt ferrules and a painted blank (mine is from RodGeeks), do I need to, or should I, do anything to the painted surface of the butt end that will slip into the tip end? Like buff off the shiny surface, etc? Or just use it as is? Thanks in advance.

Folks, where can I find a comprehensive discussion of when to use regular nylon thread with or without color preserver, vs NCP nylon thread - pros and cons, etc.? Thanks in advance.

Is there any difference between the Fuji DPSM and DPSSD reel seats other than the cosmetic differences?

Herb, I calculated the choke guide location using both the 27 x spool diameter as mentioned in the referenced article, and also using the reel measurements calculator program on the Anglers Resource website for the New Guide Concept system. The 27x method gave choke guide location at 1647 mm / 64.8", and the NGC calculator gave a choke guide position at 1336mm / 52.6". Roughly a 12&qu

Thanks Herb. How do I locate the reduction and choke guides on the blank?

Thanks Herb. You are correct, this is a boat rod. Mostly I fish from shore but I have other rods for that. You said "If you want to go KR concept." Well its not that I want to go KR concept, its more like that is all I know so I started there. If there is a better system for this rod I will use it. I think I prefer the double foot guides for the reason you stated. I am not sure

Well, I guess I can answer my own question after searching older posts here (Who would have thought that...). It sounds like the silicone molds may not be available any more, and had limited useful life. Tom's cake pan method may be more useful to me anyway and possibly easier, especially for custom dimensions. What do you use for mandrels, is it a specific product or any metal rod?

I just watched his video on how to make the form cores and grips, etc, but it looks like his website is inactive, at least as far as the grip products go? Does anybody know if he still sells the component products, in particular the silicone forms and cases? I know Mudhole sells carbon fiber grip kits, and foam cores, as does Get Bit, but I am wondering if the Riley Rods products are still avai

Joe, I wonder if the RodGeeks 4 pc blank you cited is the same blank used in the St Croix Triumph 4 pc travel surf rod. It has the same ratings. If so that is a very good travel surf blank. I use the St Croix for Rooster fishing in MX and know several experienced captains etc in MX that love that rod for that purpose. If you have the budget you also should check out the Century travel surf bl

I am confused by the answers here - are paste epoxy and gel epoxy the same product just different names by different manufacturers? Or are they entirely different products. The only ones I am familiar with are Pro Paste and U-40 rod bond.

I am about to commence wrapping guides on a blank using regularThreadmaster epoxy. The humidity in my shop is around 75%. Do I need to make any acomodations for that humidity level? Temp in low 70's, although I can raise the temp if need be. Only way to adjust the humidity is move wrap location. Thanks in Advance.

Ok, but I thought the opened jar of Permagloss would not stay workable for long?

Just to follow up on this, the Permagloss on the CFX grip turned out nice. One thing though for other folks not familiar with Permagloss - I left the extra in the plastic mixing cup I poured it into. Fortunately I took it to the garage to dry up and gas off, because the Permagloss eventually melted though the plastic cup and stuck all over the garbage can lid. Glad I didn't leave it sitting on

Thanks guys. Maybe I missed it, but what is the epoxy that you are referring to to glue the carbon sleeve to the foam core? Just regular two part rod epoxy? I assume it is something that dries clear?

I was planning to use an American Tackle Aero reel seat 17mm with a CFX carbon fiber full length grip. Concern I have is that the grip diameter where the grip inserts into the reel seat housing is narrower than the reel seat opening, leaving about a 1/16" inch gap around the entire grip. I don't like the gap from an appearance or function standpoint. Is there a way to use this reel seat w

I have some questions about putting a Permagloss finish on a carbon fiber grip. I have watched Tom Kirkman's YouTube video several times. Seems pretty straightforward. But I am unclear on one thing that Tom mentions at the beginning of the video. He states that the unfinished grip is "wetted out and covered with a second coat of the wetting out epoxy" and then sanded. Couple que

I need to ream a 12" carbon fiber grip with a urethane foam core. Do the Flex Coat reverse pilot spade bits work well on foam cores? I have only seen those discussed for use with cork and somewhat EVA. If not, what other options are there besides my CRB reamer set? And what if the diameter of the blank is larger than the inside diameter of the carbon fiber that wraps over the end of th

Herb, I didn't scrap anything! All concepts are still in the works. I just decided I didn't want to do my first wraps etc on my expensive blanks... I will still build the the surf rods, that is what I fish most. But after all the discussions I am stepping back and researching more on the blank. I am not confident I have the correct blank for what I am trying to do so still researching that on
