I found that if I align the tip on the rod so the ring is down at the 6 o clock and not up at 12 o clock gravity will help keep it aligned to the reel seat. a little water spay bottle help to cool as to not over heat. lighter, small torch, heat gun they all work.

I got a nice heat gun from ace hardware store there name on it . there is two fan speeds and 5 temperature setting plus it is made were it can be placed pointing up so you have your hands free . I use it to soften epoxy to strip rods down for repair or no heat and just air to release bubbles.

I take a 90 degree air sander with a 1 inch disc and sand down over the guide feet or a file to remove the finish and thread pop off the guide ,peel the thread and finish off then find the end of the thread and pull it out from under the remaining finish. I have stripped some rod ( penn ) were the finish wouldn't crack off and a little heat was needed to soften so it would peel off.

I just got one of the flex coat burnishing tools I think it is made out of cow bone. I just took the guides off a rod and was trying to remove the finish the old credit card as a scraper didn't work so I tried the burnishing tool and thought it worked good it is hard but has a dull edge I used the handle part which is curved and followed the curve of the blank.

working with metallic thread is harder then nylon for new builders in my opinion because of some problem that happen with this thread. you need to read a post back a page that was posted on august 1st titled "how many of us are willing to pay ---"
