Rena, the same method GUSA is using was used by AllStar when we toured their factory some years ago in Houston. Very interesting process. Letting gravity work for you looks like a better method then drawing the blanks through a membrane.

.....when someone comes into the shop and says, "whats that smell?", and you dont smell anything because your receptors have long ago burned out.... .....when there is a machine on a long table with a spider-web of colorful thread fashioned in such a way as to cover up what is going onto a rod in some holders...... ....when there are pictures on the wall of weaves, copies of lay

And the thing I like about this group is that there are thousands like Billy out there who would do the same thing. This is the sharingest group I have ever encountered. Thanks Billy for representing all of us so well! Dave

It is more than that. Braided gives you so much more abrasion and just plain strengh difference that the application of it is extremely useful in some situations. I dont use braided in all applications as some folks do. I only use it when I have lilly pads and want to throw a rat, buzzbait or spinnerbait. If I catch a good fish here, there will be one big tangle of lilly pads and I need something

I built one once that had too long of a handle. It did not suit what I wanted to do and the way I used it. So I pulled the cap off the butt and I cut it down. Now it suits me and works fantastically well. I dont see why Bil Gburek cant do the same thing with the surf rod. Build it longer and if you dont like it, cut it off. Dave

A friend of mine has been on the Jimmy Houston show a couple of times and on the Roland Martin show once and he said that virtually everything is scripted. They were told what to "chat" about because it enhanced the lure sales once they revealed what lure it was they were talking about. Houston got paid EVERYTIME he mentioned a sponsors name so you can understand why they mention it so

I had another idea. Take the 8 shades and just straight wrap them one after another on a test blank or wood dowel and try to finish it with CP before you go to all the work on a rod. Try one layer of CP and then do a separate section with 2 coats of CP and see what happens when you finish it. I use practice blanks to check ideas and new finishes, etc so I dont screw up a good rod. Works for me...

John, it sounds to me like you need to scrap the rod and start over. Something is wrong and it is probably the lack of CP. I love Madiera and use it all the time but always with CP. I know you are not supposed to do it but I thin my first coat of finish with alcohol and try to get some penetration and sealing action. It works for me and I seldom have any problems with the finish or the thread. Ma

I was very impressed by the show last Feb. I had not attended the previous shows but really wanted to. The thing that I remember most and will probably always remember is the friendliness of everyone and the spirit of cooperation and "let me show you" approach that we saw everywhere. It is a very unique experience and one I truly hope that I can repeat. The show can only get better and

Well, I will have you folks know that my granddaughter is the New International World Champion Rod Builder. We sent out emails to possible competitors in at least 2 countries (three if you count Louisiana) and invited them to compete for the title. Also included with the title was a small plastic tiara and a hug from gramma. The competition was not diminished by the fact that only one other perso

I have recoils on all my new flyrods and I think they are 1000% better than snake guides. I am pretty hard on equipment and they take all I dish out. I would not cut the feet back very far. I think they need a good base to be able to flex without doing some odd angles and stuff. If you did cut them back a little, I doubt if it would make much difference in being able to pull one out. They stick p

A friend brought be a two piece spinning rod he used for saltwater casting and asked me to refurbish it. The butt section was horrible as it had numerous dings and scrapes. The upper section surprisingly had almost no dings. I thought about it for a while and finally stripped off everything on the butt blank section. I then sanded lightly on all the places that resisted in getting glue and gunk o

OK, Tom, I have seen you downplay your roll before but as far as we all are concerned, you deserve every accolade you get because you are very, very good at what you do. We all recognize that and applaud you. You run a first class magazine and rod builders convention and we all dont give you enough credit for all that you do behind the scenes we cant see. Sometimes, we just need to say Thanks.

I think you are right that they draw that kind of traffic because they have all kinds of boats, RV's, trailers, camping equip, fishing gear, your name it. A couple of rod builders have had booths and I understand from one that he has almost 6months of work from the show for he and a partner. You would absolutely have to coat tail on one of the other shows. Even then, I bet it could cost $50,000

Just thinking out loud, but I think that the crowd was down some since it was competing with NASCAR. I saw a lot of folks headed for Florida. Some of them would surely have come if there was no competition from car racing. I never realized how big NASCAR is on the eastern seaboard. You might try to wedge the show in between big races next year. My next thought was "how far will a non-build

I think you all have good points. As Lance says, the Pro's are not where we could get any attention. They have too much at stake. If you ever see someone on TV showing off what they made, they have probably paid for the spot themselves. I had a thought that the best way to do it would be on Public TV. If we could get someone to do a 1st class job of filming a teaching session say with kids. You

I am really glad we are coming the "southern" route. We will follow the empy cracklin packages left by Bill Stevens and the occational mising road kill that looks interesting. The weather is supposed to be wet but not terrible the next few days! I hope so. Atlanta can be a xxxxx if it is snowy or really wet. Good luck to all, especially those in the northern tier---you got bad stuff t

Hey, do what I did when we went to Colorado for the first time by car, show her a small map and tell her, "See, it's only this far on the map". Luckily, she has a good sense of humor, especially about riding for 16 hours to get there. Come to think of it, I kind of did the same thing to get her to agree to come to North Carolina this year.......it's about the same distance from Hou

I am constantly amazed at how many people had either built a rod at one time or have the parts to do a rod in their garage or storage. It seems that most of my fishing club buddies have either done it once or twice or considered it. I would bet a considerable percentage of the 48,000 that Cabelas sees never build the rod or get so frustrated they throw it away. Several of my friends have said the

We have done it to ourselves whether we admit it or not. EVERYONE buys on the cheapest price. America cant compete with $1/hour labor. Plain and simple. We first drove all of the machine tool and die folks out, then the large industrial suppiers, the small tools mfgs, then the appliance mfgs, we are about to drive all of the American auto mfgs out of business in favor of Japanese/Korean/etc. You

I am always amazed at how may people dont use on-line stuff like www.mapquest.com to get a quick map and directions. I did my trip over a month ago and have all the details I need by zooming in trouble interchanges and downtown High Point streets, etc! That's what the internet is for, nes pas? Now my navigator just has to tell me where to go( like she wouldn't do it anyway).
