Patrick, One of the things I do when I have a dark rod and light threads is to use a white KILZ spraypaint on the areas where the threads will be. I mask off the area and spray it as lightly as I can. I found that Kilz works better than Testors and does not leave an uneven surface for the thread. Once dry, I have not had any problem with it coming off when I pack the threads. You do have to let

I should have guessed, Gary, that you had some special reason for wanting a short topwater rod. I personally dont fish boat docks a lot so I didnt even think about that as the reason. I would likewise use a 5'6" St Croix with a fast or extrafast tip and a moderate butt. I also agree with Mike that you dont have to go to the V's to get a great rod. I really like the moderate modulus rods b

I like the selections that Mike and Bill suggested. The scary part is that I also have and use most of the ones they suggest so you cant go wrong there with either of them. I would also look at the G Loomis blanks. I use several and they are excellent, especially for carolina rigging. Many of the companies to the left carry GLoomis blanks. One further suggestion, I would not use such a short rod

There will be short periods when you will appear to be normal to almost everyone, but we know you are just thinking about that next project and being quiet. If you take the little red balls out of the capsule and just take them, you will see the psychedelic colors and how to put them together in combination that others might like. Never take the little yellow pills they give you with the large wh

I bought a Flex Coat drying motor and stand and bent the aluminum plate stand at a 45 deg angle. Then I took a piece of velcro and a cup the size I use to mix in and velcroed it to the rubber cover. Just drop in a cup of material and it mixes it up like crazy. I also add the marble like was recommended and it does a great job of keeping everything moving and mixed up. If you dont have plate alumi

I built a rod for a friend in repayment for some favors and he told me yesterday that he wont use it cause he is afraid he might break it or damage it. I was crushed, I built it for him to use not sit in the corner! I told him to use it and if he ever broke it I would fix it but I really dont think he will. I guess I need to make him a rod with no butt wrap and nothing special on the guides and w

Since I build mostly bass rods, I build from the butt to the tip. The cork handle first, then the reel seat (blank exposed ones fit tight to the blank), then the foregrip, winding check, hook keeper, butt wrap, guides and lastly the tip top. Sometimes I put the guides and top on before the butt wrap but mostly not. I cant do it much different unless I use an oversize reel seat and I really dont

A light grey with some yellow banks looks really good. I still use practice sticks to try my ideas. Its a really good way to try something without commiting on a rod. I use dowels I get at Home Depot. They have lots of sizes but 7/16 works the best for me. I saw one that had aqua with black trim that was not bad. Dave
