I always put mine on foil and mix it there. I have learned to fold it several times with a popsycle stick. Works great but you can feel the heat some time on a large batch. Since the rod is for you, I would not worry about it and build it on out. Put a little twist on the reelseat. If it seems solid, I would say try it. Worst thing happens is it breaks loose now or later and you reglue it. Be

I use fishing boxes for the small Gudebrod spools. For Madeira, they have boxes available for their spools. I think you can find any kind of box you want if you look around. Check out some of the boxes on Mud Hole or Janns Netcraft and others on the left.

If you have the time, why not get one and build it and try it out. I like to do that myself before I recommend something to someone. I need to know how the blanks work and since you are going to build 16 rods, testing 1 only makes sense to me. This would also let you get a Gator Glass and see if it really is too heavy. Do each one and test them both.

I did that just recently with my travel fly rod---I could not wait. Now I am mulling over what to do. Rebuild it or just fish with it that way. It aint the way I like for them to be but then again it is a lot of work to strip it off and do it again.....decisions, decisions........

I have a hobby lathe and I think it is marvelous. I only do cork on it. If I ever wanted to do wood, I would move up to a mini-lathe. but for once in my life, I did not start at the top and move down. I usually start big and find out I bought too much. My norm would be to get a $300-400 lathe to do cork and find out later I had little interest in doing wood. This time I actually did it right an

I am living in Toledo temporarily but I would be willing to come to a gathering if one were put together and it was on a weekend. I will be in Toledo thru about Thanksgiving or so.

I got you all beat---3rd cast of my new St Crois 905.4 5wt, travel rod--caught a Greater Redhorse. Had no idea what that thing was but I caught it. Bill, I think it must be in the "Bunker" family because no one knows what that is either!!! Good fishin.

I will provide a tube and sock if the client wants me to get it. I have occasionally sold them. I made a gift rod for a relative and provided it because they needed a way to safely store the rod. It all depends on the customer or situation.

Definitely paint over the orange. I'd use a dark grey to make it look like an unpainted blank. I would never sand any blank. Asking for trouble. I would not do it for less than what a good blank would cost in the first place.

This is probably heresay, but I just paid $19 at Bass ProShop for a travel rod tube that is marvelous. It is exactly the right size. It has like 3" of foam on each end and holds the pieces firmly between the foam. It is cloth covered with a sling. What I loved about it is that it is for a travel rod and I can actually carry it on an airplane because it fits in my carryon bag. Just dont put

That a way, Billy. You always remember the important stuff....Like trying it on something that does not matter first. I alwasy hear about a good idea and then try it on something that does matter. So far, I have been able to get away with it but one day.....

I am on assignment in the mid-West and took my wrapping gear. I am doing some stuff I always wanted to do but never had the time. I bought a cheap little light to use at my work table. Holy cow, the light is one of those high intensity things and it is blue! Everything is skewed. I have to go out this weekend and find something better. I need one of those lamps that uses the bulbs designed to

FYI--I have that rod and love it. I throw small plastics rigged as a split shot Carolina rig. Works great and very sensitive.

Hey Roger, next time you decide to dump a whole load of cork, let me know. I bet I can use it.

I do it all the time. I have a little lazer from Radio Shack that looks like a fat pencil. It is designed to be a pointer. I place it on the flat of the reel seat and shoot thru the guides. I align it such that it hits the bottom of the first guide and it will likely hit the bottom of the next few. On a straight rod with aligned guides, the laser hits the guides either on the bottom of the ri

I dont think I would balance a fly rod, but I do some of my bass rods. I agree with Dick, too many variables and besides, casting a fly rod to me is not work compared to throwing a swimbait all day.

Do a chevron. I bet that is one of the first ones most everyone does. For my money its the easiest. I dont think the tiger is a good one to start with. It does not build into other things like a crosswrap chevron does.

I was going to build a 904-4 and I wanted to ask if you thought using a set of REC recoil guides would have any appreciable effect on the rods performance?

Drag is an interesting thing. It comes into play more often than we suspect and in ways that are not intuitive. Eons ago, my college mechanical engineering class built a wind tunnel to play with and use in labs since our school did not have one. We spent a lot of hours playing with it and learning how things work or dont work in the fluids world. One very interesting test we performed involve

Thanks Tom, there is a time and place for everything. I dont see where any charity has anything to do with a rodbuilding convention. This is not a callus statement but one where I attend several expos and conventions annually and at those I feel the same way. We all do our own charity work in our own ways and I often feel put upon by these groups in these settings. Next you will have PETA want

I need a 9 ft, 4wt, 4 piece travel flyrod blank and since I mostly do bass rods, I dont have a lot of experience with fly rods. It would mostly be used for trout in relatively small streams and rivers. I need something in the less than $100 category. This is for me not a customer. What do you recommend I build?

Thanks Bill, I had to run away for a weekend. The rod is for my aunt who is over 80 but still fishes in "her" pond in the front yard! I an sure she will prefer the gold. Glad you let me know. Dave

I am so glad you posted this John, as I was going to ask our Swampland folks for color recommendations on an LSU rod I have to do. So now we have settled on the Gudebrod NCP Purple, which one do you recommend for the Yellow?

Thank you Alex! I catch some heat from my wife for keeping my extra spools of line in the freezer. I think they do last a very long time by doing this. I have used spools that are 3-4 years old that are as fresh as ones right off theshelf. I have never had a problem with breakage of any from the freezer. But I do think that it will last a shorter period than forever....

Well, those threads were special! Tom, I believe your fear that in excess of 200 folks will want to play may be realized! At this juncture of the casting contest going on here, over 1468 people have viewed this electronic contest. I am not sure that I will be able to come to the party but if I can, I will be packing old Betsy, the meaniest casting rod I ever built. The only trouble is, I think I

Billy, Remember the rods I made with the colors that were so loud, you had to have sunglasses? Well, this is the same premise that I used. A buddy we wanted to mess with said he didnt care what Scott and I came up with. So I pulled the loudest colors I could find. We thought it would be terrible. But you know what....it actually worked and worked well. I sold several of those and I just made
