I did a "how-to strip and rebuild" on my facebook page not long ago. Because the owner liked the reel seat, it was left on there, but everything else was removed. I basically did like Mr. Wilson said, I used channel locks, chewed off the big pieces of cork, then used a utility knife to clean the rest of it up. Here is a link to the album where you can see the cork being removed. Thi

Capt. Faulkner - Thank you for the feedback. From the responses I've been getting, people are really liking the look of the Mad-Swirl. Most people are using them on grips, but don't forget, you can use it on reel seats, reels, etc. It's a very versatile product. If you get a chance, post some pictures if you have time. Thanks, jeremy reed

When the product first went on the market, I had some questions about UV and durability. Since that time, C.Kruel in Germany did a UV test/durability test. They marbled some plastic eggs, and so far they have been sitting in the sun for 9 weeks. The color has remained the same, but has lost some gloss. This isn't a big concern for grips and other applications receiving a clear coat. If anyon

Tulk - When I first started building a few years ago, I bought the cd with volume 1-9 on it. That cd alone is a wealth of information. I'd highly recommend it.

I've been getting some feedback on the Magic Marble Paint, so I wanted to address a common issue. For those that have tried it, when you swirl the paints, you sometimes get an "opening" in the paint that will allow the primer to show through. I had the same issue when I started, but have it figured out for the most part to prevent this. For my example, I'll use black, purple, and gre

I am down to two primary color kits, after they are gone, the sale will be over for the primary color kit. Once the primary color kit is sold out, I hope to have more within a week. There is also a number of other colors also available. Most people are trying the primary color kit right now just to learn the technique. Also, if there are any colors you'd like to see created, just let me know.

We recently moved, so all of my rodbuilding items are packed up, except for the paint. Once I get set back up, I hope to have some videos posted that will show various rod components being dipped with MM paint. Also for those of you that have a significant other that is into arts and crafts, pick up an extra bottle or two to earn some brownie points. This was just introduced at the Vegas arts

Ken - I just wanted to clarify the methods. I've had a few questions after people have read the article, so I just wanted to clear some of that up. And I understand some of confussion. Most of my article covers the borax method, because it's a lot more to it. The Magic Marble section just took up a few paragraphs, and it seems like something is missing just because of how simple and straight

I've had a couple questions about the Mad-Swirl technique, so I am just clarifying some of those questions. The Mad-Swirl is a technique of painting with water and paint. This is accomplished by 2 methods, the Borax Method, and the Magic Marble Method. (1) - The Borax Method requires more work. It requires a certain water temperature, certain borax mixture ratio, and water preparation. Th

I bought my jet 1220 from a woodturner for cheap and picked up a bed extension later. He was getting rid of it because he had upgraded to a larger nova lathe that had the swivel head. He got it about half off the retail. He bought it refurbished. If you go to nova's site, teknatool, you can find refurbished lathes. If you keep an eye out you can get a good deal. I just want to throw out a few pointers when using the product. The bottles must be shaken pretty good. They have a little rattle ball in them like a spray can that helps mixing the paint. After shaking the paint, I recommend letting it sit for 5 or so minutes. When you shake it, bubbles are created. If you put the paint down on the water right after shaking, the bubble will drip out also,

Thank you. I did decide to become a sponsor. Tom has worked hard to have a great site and I didn't want to violate any rules regarding advertising. I also wanted to let people know where they can buy the paint from. I've got a very simple website I designed up that you can order from and use PayPal to pay. Also, you can send me your orders at ReedRods&#

Thank you. I will say that, with further testing, if you're going to use pour foam without a sleeve, use either thread finish or the epoxy sold by Riley rods for the top coat for added support. Auto clear will not offer any structural support. I had a 6lb foam ding up after significant use. My ones using epoxy are still going strong. I use primarily 8lb foam. Also, do not limit this paint

I haven't thrown a 10xd, but I'm wondering if it will be too much weight to cast for a RFE 806, I've got the blank but haven't used it yet. I built a castaway 965 for a guy two years ago for dd22s. He tried using that blank for the 10xd. I told him I didn't think it would cast as well, but that it would handle the bait in the water. My understanding is the 10xd does not pull much more than th

I thought I would pass on this tip for searching a site. Someone shared this on a bass fishing forum, and I thought it was pretty good. You can search the rodbuilding forum using the built in search function, but it has limitations. For example, search for "965" and you will not get any results. Now to use google, pull up a google search screen. Type the following: site:rodbu

You may look at the ISWB965 by batson, and it can double as a A-Rig rod. I haven't built on this blank yet, but Steve Gardner recommended it for when A-rigs came out. I've used a blank similar to this by batson, but it was stiffer than the ISWB965 because the angler wanted a stiffer tip.
