Keep an eye on craigslist and check at woodcraft, like stated above. I got my jet 1220 from craigslist for fairly cheap. I was at harbor freight this morning, and looked at that lathe. It looks really good for the price. Also, HF usually has a really good return policy should it mess up. An alternative for only doing grip work may be the grizzly hobby lathe that can be used with a drill.

I would think this would depend on the type of wrapper you are using. To illustrate, I use some folding tables. My first wrapper was a homemade wrapper. I had it set up where I could put my elbows on the table and the rod would hit my hands. I did not have to hunch/lean over as the rod was pretty close to my nose height. This setup put very little stress on my neck area. The folding tab

Just to note, the magic marble will need a protective coating. I've used magic marble over rigid foam, eva, and cork on freshwater rods and I haven't had any issues. I know there are some guys out there trying it with surf rods, with rod holders, and whatnot, but I haven't followed up with them to see if they are having any issues.

The 4 rods in the picture on Mudhole's site were all done over rigid pour foam. On the green rod, I turned the rear grip with eva, but the butt grip was done over rigid pour foam. Those were the very first rods I did after I got the technique figured out. I believe mudhole recently sent out an email, and in the email it showed it over cork. Nonetheless, a Mad-Swirl can be done over wood, ev

Riley Rods is your one stop shop for carbon fiber grips. They also have a great youtube video that will walk you through all the steps.

Put the butt grip on last, from the back end. When I have put stuff in butt grips, I stand it vertical, butt facing up, and put finish over my item. There are several on here that have done pennies, etc, you can find in the photo sections. It's just that you have to slide the grip on from the rear.

Also, to answer your questions about longevity, so far I have not had any issues. I have some 6lbs foam I'm testing without any issues, but I generally recommend 8lb foam for the added stiffness since there isn't a sleeve over it. If you want to try something different, you can also Mad-Swirl over carbon fiber sleeving by taping off various parts of the grip then swirling and removing the t

The mad-swirl grips I am making are the same as the carbon fiber grips minus the carbon sleeving. They come in as light as cork and offer great sensitivity. I get my pour foam and epoxy from Riley Rods. If you have any questions about how to do them or need any paint, feel free to give me a shout or shoot me an email. 502.439.4123 ReedRods@gm

Right now reels are marked 17% off at Blue Collar Sporting Goods up through April 1st. Use code BCSG at checkout for the discount. I also have new grips up and some new Mad-Swirl Ghost Grips that have metallic bases that

We had a good gathering on 3/22 with a handful of builders on hand. We had the event at Lynn William's shop, which is amazing by the way. We are looking at having another get together, most likely at Lynn's shop again, in late July or early August. If you are interested in coming, shoot me an email at ReedRods@gmail.c

I shape the pour foam to the desired shape then I put epoxy on it; thread finish will also work. This may require more than one coat depending on the voids. The purpose of the this is to create a smooth surface and fill in the voids. Sometimes I'll hit it with some fine sandpaper or scotchbrite after it dries just to make sure it is smooth. Once this is done, and dry, I prime it with either a s

I'm late getting this out. The KYRBS are meeting in Owensboro, KY at Lynn Williams' shop this Saturday, 3/22 at 9am. Lynn has worked hard to clean up his shop, and since we had to cancel the 3/8 meeting due to weather and whatnot, he has had to keep it that way for a few extra weeks. We are planning on starting around 9am. We are going to cover catfish/panfish builds, customer packets/ret

Doc - Do you have a picture of the grip that the guy is wanting? Is is full length, or a split TN grip? Would pour foam work in your case? I do my Mad-Swirl grips over a pour foam base. I have both 6# and 8#. For crappie and bass fishing, either would hold up fine. On my grips, I seal it up with an epoxy I get from Riley Rods, prime, dip, and then put on a protective coat. You get a sup

Col Chaseling - I agree on the Stradics. They are a great, dependable reel and at an attractive price point for most. I haven't used the CI4, but I haven't heard anything bad about them. I'm curious to see how the new shimano lineup compares to years past. Mr. Gwynne - Thank you. Right now they'll be roughly $3/inch or $18ish for a two color split grip. I'm still trying to find the exa

Mr. Gwynne - I will look into the Penn models. I don't do any saltwater fishing, so I know very little about them. Here are some pictures of the grips. The new ones have been tweaked some and are split grips. These are some shapes I am experimenting with.

Some people may not be aware, but I am a sponsor on this site so that is why I am posting this. I thought there may be some people interested in reels and was looking to help some people out by offering them at really good pricing. My Mad-Swirl grips should be up for sale on the by the end of next week at my online store. If you have any questions, give me a shout. Thanks,

I have carried daiwa, lew's, abu garcia, quantum, and shimano reels in the past, and now that I have my online store up and running, I'll be getting some more in. In order to facilitate sales and before I invest much in inventory, I'm asking for opinions on which reels to carry. Typically I have carried the following: Lew's Tournament Pro Lew's Super Duty Lew's BB1 Abu Garcia Winch A
