To be honest I build very few fly rods and those that I do, input on what is wanted is from my customers. However, there is a fellow that I have built several bass rods for and he has asked me to recommend a good overall fly rod for trout and smallies without indicating their size. My assumption based on where he lives would be fish up to 2-3 pounds. I should probably ask that before recommend

What an unbelievable weekend. Thought I was going to get some rodbuilding done this weekend....wrong. Had 31.5 official inches of snow in Bel Air, Maryland and was wondering how our fellow rod builders up north or down south made out? Other than the roof collapsing on my neighborhood Safeway store we did alright. Hope everyone is okay. Tom

Absolutely you can cut it down . It will fit the 16 Aero with no problem. You might want to get the longer grip so when you ct there is still sufficient length . I use a long very sharp Stanley razor knife. Works like a champ Tom

Exactly Ross. It is a blend of the two different modulus prepegs. That way St Croix can offer a blank with the best modulus in the area of the blank that it is best suited to do the job and offer the best performance. Not sure why less expensive unless they use more SCll in the blank than the SCIV which would make sense. Tom

It doesn't say whether the whole grip is broken or just a part of it. I do a lot of cork repairs. On thing I never do is sand down the cork to the blank. Too risky in hitting the blank. If I am going to replace the entire cork, or just part of it, I simply use pliers grab and twist the cork off the blank. It will come off easily and almost completely. Gentle heat and scraping will take care

Jason. Not a lot to choose from at Bushido. My experience is that they are a bit heavy. You may be better off with MHX, Batson, or Rodgeeks . Check the specs on the various brands and go with what suits you needs.

Was wondering if anyone knows whether the Alps rod stand with rollers will work on a Pac Bay / American Tackle rod lathe? They look very similar in the photos but wanted to be sure Thanks Tom

Dan An excellent alternative to masking tape for arbors is using fiberglass drywall tape. Several advantages are; it is impervious to water should it ever get under the cork unlike paper on making tape. It is porous so depending on the depth of the tape the epoxy can penetrate all the way to the blank offering a super strong bond. It also transmits vibration better from the blank should t

Tell tale on the steel rod is that a lot of them actually had the guides "welded" right to the rod.

A client of mine wants a spinning rod made with Winn split grips and a 16mm AT Aero comfort grip reel seat. As I see it the standard Winn grips are 1.08 inches in diameter and the AT reel seat will take only a 0.998 inch grip. Seeing that you can't sand down a Winn grip, I was wondering if I moved back to the 0.998 diameter and cut it off would it effect the adhesion of the wrap on the EVA

Lynn, I will cut the sleeve about an inch and a quarter long. Then taper the ends for a nice smooth transition, the distance between the end of the tapers should leave me a one inch sleeve. Tom

When talking about saving a rod that has been broken the owner is not looking for weight reduction but to be able to restore a rod to good usable condition with the same action that it had before it broke. As Roger said I have repaired rods from the tip all the way to the split in the rear grips. Generally it is very difficult in the lower sections to even notice the repair and almost impossible

Tom, I am using an outer sleeve, so you are saying that the thinner diameter of my sleeve once properly installed should be OK?

On a MH bass rod I have to repair, the tip is broken off 3 inches from the top. I have done a number of these with great success but in this case I have a question. A fiberglass sleeve that I have fits the taper exactly, but it is off a panfish fiberglass rod. It is a lot thinner than what I normally use and was wondering at that area in the blank once epoxied in place and wrapped, which b

Jared when a rod is called an extra fast it is referring to the action of the rod, that is the tip section. The popping blank that Norm is referring to has that action in the tip with some good backbone to handle you heavier weight. Keep in mind that names given to rods don't necessary indicate their only application but maybe their most used application. A rod blank is a tube with an inher

Nate on those types of motors if you grab them they will change direction. That being said if you have too much tension on your rod stand pulley it will or may do the same thing. When drying on my wrapper I leave the top roller down but not tightened by the wing nut. It only applies enough weight/tension to keep the rod in place. And be sure the dryer motor pulley belt goes directly to

I agree with Norman on the microwave casting guides, as i have seen little to no improvement in casting although I still like them . The spinning is another story. they work well and my customers have responded with additional orders as a testament to their performance. I have also built Minima 4 and Fuji's KR guides that will cast just as far. However there is one big difference even on

The Alps chuck is an outstanding product and is capable of turning stock on the AT/Pac Bay /Alps lathe. The big concern I would have is that it is turning in the wrong direction for turning. Unless you have a unit that can reverse the direction of the material you are not going to be able to properly/ easily turn material on that type of lathe. That is unless you can set your tool rest on the

Brook I would think that in addition to length, action and power, line class and lure weights most want to see the diameter of the butt and tip along with the blank's weight. Tom

When I posted this thread I was thinking what most all have said. I like it as far as aesthetics but found it complicated to navigate. However we are all creatures of habit and resistant to change. The more I stayed with it the more I liked it. There are a few things I don't like #1 my history. If you are an experienced builder you will find it easier because you know what to look for but a
