That's exactly where I am on this Roger. It's a 9 1/2 St Croix SC5 Salmon /Steelhead rod. I guess with 13 inches of cork grip it just looked a little far up the blank. I appreciate your input. Tom

I am building a rod that the owner will be using a Shimano 4000 reel on it. I do not own a reel that size and was wondering if anyone can either point me to where i can get the height of the base to the center of the spool shaft or has one they can measure it would be greatly appreciated. Building using a Microwave30 guide system and the factory recommendations seem like the stripper guide

Roger I like your dental ligature bands and use them as they are easy to work with too. The smallest i have found are 1/8 inch and when applying guides at the tip of bass rods that have a 4.5 to 5 tip they aren't small enough to hold the guide. It is in that area that I use the guide stick glue. if you have any ideas on how you handle those small tips I sure would like to know. If you have f

Don That is a Lews factory today not one of mine. I saw that reel seat to and like it a lot. What drives me nuts is seeing components on rods from the big guys and not being able to purchase components as well. Like that Winn grip with the swipes on it. I've done several in that chartreuse it would have looked much better if that style was available. Tom

It is so nice to see that major manufactures are picking up on the Winn grips. They are on 95% of what I build nowadays . What is interesting to see, are the variations of these grips style as in the photo below.. It would be nice to know if Winn plans to offer more choices to rod builders in the coming months. If you notice on this rod it has GREEN winding checks. This is the third man

Tom the common glue sticks should work as long as it is a LOW temp glue. The issue and why I only use the flex coat is the ability to move the guide once it is wrapped to get a perfect alignment of your guides. I would suggest that your try it on a spare blank or it the grip area where you can remove it a cover with the grip. If it holds and can be moved you are good to go. The glue has n

Good idea Phil, not all attendees are veteran builders. Perhaps they can do one on a fast action rod then one on a moderate action to show you the difference in how it would have been laid out !!

I use AFTCOTE quite frequently and my experience is that mixed perfectly it takes twice as long to cure. The minimum I rotate it is ten hours. Overkill? Maybe but it has never sagged. It even still feels "tacky" after that long. My dryers turns at 9 rpm. Tom

Don, thanks for your comments. I know that on the blanks there is a decal that says Made China if in fact that is where one is made. What I was referring to was when you go to the Batson website and they have all of their rods listed there is no way to know which of the blanks Bill is referring to that are American made until it shows up at your shop with a Made in China sticker on it.

Recently I was asked to make a rod exactly, well almost, a rod like the Kistler Magnesium 2 rod. This is a spinning rod with Winn grips and a down locking Fuji 17mm reel seat. On the Kistler they have a Winn grip with their name nicely printed on it but it is however a 2 1/2 inch straight taper in chartreuse. Finding nothing like that on the market I had to cut down a 3 1/2 inch grip then

I have an opportunity to build a rod using the American Tackle Aero reel seat, however the customer would like it in white. Does anyone know who offers those reel seats in pure white. Otherwise I would consider painting one but have not done so on a reel seat and was worried about long term use and how it would hold up. Any suggestions or suppliers it greatly appreciated. Tom
